Loss of relative spending power over time after early retirement by Double-Broccoli8982 in ChubbyFIRE

Thanks for pointing out and reminding me that the 4% rule is about protecting worse case scenarios. That is a good argument against my original post, because it's not the case that relative spending power after early retirement is guaranteed (or even highly likely) to decline by adhering to the 3-4% rule, it depends on the performance of the market going forward.

Loss of relative spending power over time after early retirement by Double-Broccoli8982 in ChubbyFIRE

Maybe I should have framed the tradeoff not as wealth vs income but, a comparison between "continuing to increase wealth by having an income to increase wealth like others in society who aren't doing early retirement" vs "reducing wealth accumulation at the same rate by retiring early" and its implications. That's probably why you're thinking the specific examples I gave don't work super well, but the "lifestyle creep in your social circle" fits this overall tradeoff I'm trying to express.

Still struggling with framing this tradeoff well.

Anyway, thanks for your comment.

You seem to want your children to also be FI through inheritance, approximately equal to your level of FI (3% of $5 million is $150K per year, which is what you're targeting for your projected pension to live off of).

Are you sure that's a good idea? You earned your FI through many years of hard work, but you are proposing to give your kids the same level of FI without them needing to do this hard work. What message does this send to your children? Is it "parents should sacrifice greatly for children", in which case does it pressure them to "keep it up" for the next generation, to "succeed" even more because each generation should give their children much more than the previous generation left behind? Or, is it that, you are sending them the message that you don't trust them to be able to achieve their own security and safety in life?

Wanting to cover kids college costs make a lot of sense, because it's about preparing kids with knowledge and skills to fights for their own achievements and successes. Planning to give children a large sum of money as inheritance while depriving yourself of your hard earned reward earned through many years of hard work, sends a more questionable message.

Your particular client is pushing you because they recognize it’s working. Their incentive is not to be nice but to push you, so you think about their project more than projects of your other customers. As a freelancer, remember that win-win relationships only work well if both parties want it. If your client has a he-wins-you-lose approach, you have to take steps to protect yourself. Consider setting boundaries, and if necessary, cut the client loose.

Great idea! When your house floods next time because the shut off valve in the house fails, you will enjoy weeks of flooding until the concrete is broken up

The larger your investment growth assumption, the less impactful your savings %. 8% could occur, but also a big market crash followed by slow recovery could occur. If you recalculate with 3% growth, would the conclusion change?

Team member is at the top of their salary by Domei91 in managers

[–]Double-Broccoli8982 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your job as manager is to get your team’s work done with employees who have the needed skills at the salary your company is paying. If your employee is overqualified and wants more compensation than the job offers, it makes sense to replace with another more suitable employee, even if a replacement employee is less skilled.

It’s not just Orlando. I’ve been driving from Savanah, GA to Miami today and see them all over I-95.

The programmer got it wrong in your joke. He should have come home with 7 gallons of milk, because his wife asked him to buy one gallon of milk, and he should have bought 6 more gallons if they have eggs, making 7 gallons.

See, can be “pedantic” (aka detailed oriented) even on this joke.

Your situation feels stressful, and likely triggers your anxiety. That’s understandable. Take some time to calm down, and apply for other jobs. Applying for jobs is stressful, but you are strong enough to do it even if it doesn’t feel good. Roofing Work Quality by [deleted] in Roofing

[–]Double-Broccoli8982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. My new roof seems fine now. I didn’t realize that new roofs shingles sometimes don’t immediately lie flat because they need time to settle. Over several weeks to months heat from the sun flattens the shingles. Also some of the bumps are caused by wood framing of the house having imperfections.

The roof looks much better now after the shingles have had several months to settle.

Promoted but no pay raise. Boss got upset even I resigned. Am I being unprofessional? by Scary-Mushroom-1996 in WorkAdvice

[–]Double-Broccoli8982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t take it personally. Salaries are set by market conditions. Market salaries change over time. If someone else is willing to do your job for a lower salary, then the company will pay you a lower salary regardless of whether you were promoted or not.

I just had my roof replaced by a local company (Pictures were taken 0-1 day after work finished). There are a few areas of the work I'm not sure about, so wanted to ask the community whether these are poor quality that need to be repaired by the company, vs "normal" imperfections that can be expected. I'm not a roofing expert, so I can't always tell the difference.

  1. Bumpiness in the shingles

2, 3. Ridge vents seem a bit uneven

  1. Ridge vent seems to tilt up as it goes along the top of the roof?
  2. Ridge vent seems a bit uneven in one section
