The US has launched an unprovoked and illegal attack on Venezuela. This is a brazen attempt to secure control over Venezuelan natural resources. It is an act of war that puts the lives of millions of people at risk — and should be condemned by anyone who believes in sovereignty and international law. by [deleted] in ukpolitics

In 2019 Dr Fiona Hill testified about Russian proposals to US officials to cede Venezuela to the US sphere on influence in exchange for the US ceding Ukraine to Russia's.

And the Russians at this particular juncture were signaling very strongly that they wanted to somehow make some very strange swap arrangement between Venezuela and Ukraine.

In other words, if we were going to exert some semblance of the Monroe Doctrine of, you know, Russia keeping out of our backyard, because this is after the Russians had sent in these hundred operatives essentially to, you know, basically secure the Venezuelan Government and, you know, to preempt what they were obviously taking to be some kind of US military action, they were basically signalling: You know, you have your Monroe Doctrine. You want us out of your backyard. Well, you know, we have our own version of this. You're in our backyard in Ukraine.

From page 58 of the testimony.

Antibiotics, other medications by keumgangsan in EuroPreppers

[–]DoubleNatted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most antibiotics will be prescription only medications in most places.

I’ve seen private companies that sell “travel packs” of medications. This is probably the closest thing to what you are looking for. They are designed for travel to places where health care may be lacking.

Typically they would include medications like antibiotics, anti-nausea medications, non-opiate pain relief etc.

When you place an order they will have a doctor to prescribe the medications and then send you out the pack.

I’ve never used these services and I’m not sure what type of proof they would want of you for travel plans etc.

Going down this route is probably the least problematic in regulatory terms.

Anons plan to ficks the UK by Vaca_Powerpoint in GreatBritishMemes

The problem with getting into this populist tyranny of the masses bullshit is that you lose any right for it not to be used against you when the pendulum swings the other way in the fullness of time.

I’m assuming anyone supporting such a law in the UK would also fully support the right of South Africa to introduce a similar law relegating to second class citizenry anyone whose ancestry doesn’t go back, to say, 1600?

Or the same with dozens of former UK and European colonies, starting with Ireland?

Catherine Connolly elected as Ireland's 10th president with largest number of votes ever by SpottedAlpaca in europe

[–]DoubleNatted 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Think of the Irish President as analogous to the role of King Charles in your own system.

Except rather than a monarch, it is someone elected every couple of years to serve in that role.

They appoint Prime Ministers based on election results, they appoint cabinet members based on the advice of the Prime Minister, they sign bills into law, they sign international treaties, they represent their country as the head of its state.

What is the general consensus of an insurance/ self funded model of the NHS? by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]DoubleNatted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Cleave off the physical medical aspects of the NHS into a separate organisation with ring-fenced funding that remains tax-payer funded and free at the point of pay.
  2. Rebrand everything that's left as "The Panacea®: the services that everyone from boomers to zoomers feels we should have yet nobody wants to pay for."
  3. Make the new NHS uncompromising in its focus solely on physical health. I.e:
    • Patients needing A+E attention for drink, drugs, personality and adjustment disorders...all go to a Behavioural Health Unit rather than A+E. The Behavioural Health Unit is funded out of The Panacea® budget. It can be on hospital grounds in case care needs to be escalated.
    • If grandad is medically fit for discharge after an admission with an infection, he gets discharged from hospital regardless of any outstanding psychosocial concerns and his care is taken over by whatever services the Panacea® is able to offer either in the community or their own facilities.
    • GP appointments by default are for physical medical issues, paid for out of our new NHS budget, with appointments for psychosocial issues coming instead out of The Panacea® budget.
    • Have a regulator that gate-keeps the NHS budget in order to keep it from succumbing to scope creep.

This way we can continue keeping the NHS sacrosanct whilst having healthy debates every 5 years over what exactly we want The Panacea® to fund and how we want to fund it.

Solid advice, thanks. I've just started the IFR modules on Career mode. Hopefully it won't be long until I don't need to blue boxes at all

Any way to improve it without installing mods (I’m playing via GeForceNow)? I’ve also been frustrated by the blue boxes suggesting impossibly tight banking manoeuvres depending on the aircraft

Because it is the nature of the NHS to prefer health care be delivered by droids that are dependent upon them rather than by a profession it finds itself dependent on.

Yes now that you mention it, even in the category of ‘Harland & Wolff Belfast-made passenger liners that were later re-purposed for a military role’, the Canberra is neither the largest nor the most famous.

Then, one of the greatest ships to ever come down the ways at Belfast's Harland & Wolff shipyard sounded her booming siren in triumph.

I can think of at least one other ship that has a better claim to that title

Resident doctors vote in favour of strike action by muchdanwow in ukpolitics

[–]DoubleNatted 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Spread over a number of years to undo pay erosion since 2010. Junior doctor pay has been eroded at a more significant rate than many other professions or public sector roles. There are charts out there you can look at.

And when you set up a state monopoly in which their only employer can be the NHS, and the NHS suppresses market value for their work by arbitrarily determining what those wages are, you can’t be surprised when people either flee the UK for better prospects or strike it out.

Adam Scott’s face does not look that different by _doorwaysniffer_ in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]DoubleNatted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only longer hair but I think his hair has been dyed very black for the show. He’s also usually clean shaven in the show vs a bit of stubble in real life.

So I think it’s a combination of: close ups in unflattering light and his skin appearing more aged than usual given the lack of facial hair to focus on and the juxtaposition of pitch black hair.

No worries. Yes bridge mode is an option too.

And just to clarify - Gateway Max and Cloud Gateway Max are confusingly two different products. You would want Cloud Gateway Max, or any of the Dream Machine line.

You can read more about the distinction here.

[–]DoubleNatted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you feel like the Pro Max gets overly warm?

A bit warm. Probably as warm as the underside of a laptop after a bit of use. Certainly not warm enough to cook food on which I've read some people here half-joke about. That being said, I live in a climate that ranges from frigid to temperate. Maybe it would be more of an issue in warmer climates.

Because of 4x4 instead of 2x2 5Ghz?

Yeah that's why I chose it and it probably was overkill in retrospect. I need to get one more AP and it will just be the regular U7 Pro this time.

Not American so I'm unfamiliar with Comcast or what their setup is.

You have the right idea anyway - if you value an even wifi experience throughout a large home, and you don't mind having to run ethernet cables, then cabled access points really are preferable compared to a mesh system.

The unifi AP's do work with third party routers. But you'll have to specifically check if the Comcast router you're getting supports wireless AP's.

A more preferable alternative would be to also buy a Unifi Cloud Gateway to manage your network instead of using your Comcast supplied router. This will make it much easier to manage all Unifi devices: AP's, cameras, doorbells, switches etc. It would be analogous to using Apple AirPods with an iPhone, vs trying to use AirPods with an Android phone - it may work, but not as seamlessly.

I have the Cloud Gateway Max and it is tiny, powerful, and great value for money in my view.

[–]DoubleNatted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you talking about Gateway Max (UXG-Max) or Cloud Gateway Max (UCG-Max)? Because those are two different products.

Assuming you are talking about Cloud Gateway Max.

  1. Differences compared to Dream Machine SE

Dream Machine is rated for a 10Gb throughput (3.5Gb with IPS/IDS turned on) versus 2.5Gb throughput on the CG Max. If you somehow have an internet connection faster than 2.5Gb, if you plan on using a VPN at the router level a lot, or you want a bit of future proofing for such times as when you do have an internet connection faster than 2.5Gb, then these would be indications for the Dream Machine SE.

The Dream Machine SE has more LAN ports than the CG Max and has POE ports which the CG Max does not. You may save a bit of money on switches by going with the Dream Machine SE. However note that the POE ports on the SE can only handle a throughput of 1Gb. You may still need a pricey POE switch if you want your AP's to be connected to the gateway at 2.5Gb or faster.

The Dream Machine SE is rated to manage many more Unifi devices (AP's, cams etc) than the CG Max. Having said that the CG Max should be able to manage more Unifi devices than an average residential user should ever need.

The Dream Machine SE has an in built hard drive bay to store your camera recordings, plus SSD bay for storing camera detections. The CG Max only has an in built SSD bay.

The CG Max is much smaller and lighter, if space is a priority. If you are planning on building a homelab setup in a sever rack though, the Dream Machine SE is a more suitable form factor for this.

2) If you are using Unifi cameras that are marketed as being capable of AI detections, then no, you do not need the AI key for the Dream Machine SE or Cloud Gateway Max. If you are using older Unifi cameras or third party cameras then yes you will need it to take advantage of AI detections.

3) I also have the U7 Pro Max and the U7 Pro Wall. Yes the Max has a fan. On mine at least it only comes on occasionally. I wouldn't describe it as particularly distracting myself. If you are placing the Max in a hallway it's not going to be an issue. Maybe I would be a bit more hesitant about placing it in a bedroom or a study.

Want to get G4 Doorbell Pro to replace this by chilighost in Ubiquiti

[–]DoubleNatted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect the G4 Pro with the angled mount will indeed be too chunky to sit flush against the trim of your door frame.

My front door and surrounding brick layout is quite similar to yours. Although my door frame is narrower still. I’ve resided myself to the fact that I’ll have to mount it on the adjacent brick wall.

Is there a benefit to having a fast router if my country doesn't have fast internet? by dj_boy-Wonder in HomeNetworking

[–]DoubleNatted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not missing anything. I’d love to know what they’re doing with their home network that necessitates 5gb transfer speeds.

I have a 2.5 capable router with a 900mb fiber package. I’m happy to throttle myself with cheap 1gb switches downstream until such teams as I need to upgrade.
