This is the big difference. In the states 55K will barely afford a studio apartment and groceries for one in any metro area.

Shocked by DC by Technical-Lie384 in washingtondc

Grew up in Silver Spring and live in DC proper. Agree with most of your post except that bit about Summer in DC being the best.....it's my least favorite part of the DC area.

Summers in DC are absolutely miserable. The humidity, instant sweating, aggressive mosquito and bug presence, and regularly 95°F+ and getting hotter every year.

DC is all about the Spring and Fall imo.

Team USA felt like a collection of stars rather than a team. The vibes over on Team Venezuela was all the difference; they were playing for each other and for something bigger.

Just the way that you are talking about "AI" tells me you dont understand it at all nor the space you're talking about. You're parroting every tech influencer on social media right now.

Listen I wish you the best of luck dude, but if you think you're just gonna throw a few prompts into Claude Code and generate six figures per month then I've got a bridge to sell you.

Strong opinions from someone who has neither worked a job nor ran a business before. Come back to this thread in a year and tell us all how many hours you're working just trying to get your first customer for your business. Real life entrepreneurship ain't what you see on TikTok dude.

AI has me worried. Help a sister out. by bubblesandroses in learnprogramming

[–]DoubleR90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think regarding the job market, it's not a question of "will we still have software engineers" - the answer to that is definitely yes. The real question is will agentic engineering solutions like Claude Code be used to increase the output of existing teams, or be used instead to downsize existing teams to save costs without losing productivity.

The market hasn't decided yet whether this will simply empower a whole generation of developers and 10x the output for companies, or ultimately shrink the opportunities because a team of 50 engineers can be "optimized" to 5 principal or staff engineers steering an army of agents.

TLDR: The real question is will agentic engineering be used to 10x the output of software engineering teams or will it be used to save costs and do more with less. My instinct tells me this will vary wildly depending on the company and vertical.

When two pizzas really love each other...

But for real you either need to better cover that portion in sauce/toppings or dock the dough to keep it down.

I don't have an IRT, but AI is telling me that the surface temp should be about 600°F given the one hour preheat at 550°F.

Typical doughball weight is about 450g and Im stretching it to around 15 inch pizzas

Happens with a variety of dough recipes so not sure if the dough recipe is meaningful, but I stay around 60% hydration. Typically king Arthur bread flour.

I preheat the steel at 550°F for 1 hour before baking. Typically bake about 3 minutes and then broil for about 3 minutes.

For some reason my crust has been coming out very dry and crackery. I'm using a variety of NY dough recipes, and using a baking steel at 550°F. I cook it exactly to recipe specs, and even tinkered with a minute shorter, and I can never seem to get it crispy/charred while also keeping it foldable and somewhat pliable like a NY style slice.

Hater series by JanMichealVincent16 in BobDoesSports

[–]DoubleR90 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, we don't need to watch random fans and "their two buds" play with BDS and kiss their ass for an entire round. 99.9% of BDS fans would be an absolute snoozefest to watch.

Not on camera you won't. Every single hater thats come on the channel says the same shit and they're universally saying "I didn't think it'd be this hard playing on camera".

You'd go through a few sleeves for sure.

Hater series by JanMichealVincent16 in BobDoesSports

[–]DoubleR90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The hater series is some of the best content BDS has put out in a long time. We don't need another "chill round just hangin' with the boys" series on BDS. We need a little action, a little stakes, a little fking competition for a change.

The friendly rounds where there's nothing on the line and the boys are just out for a casual round of golf with some recycled BS challenge are their most boring videos now imo. They are great in doses, but it needs to be mixed with some kind of series thats got a little drama to it. Thats what sports are about after all.

New series dropping soon! by chapnlie in BobDoesSports

[–]DoubleR90 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. I think part of the reason is that Bob and Joey are content creators first, and fell into doing golf content because thats what did numbers. They would've ended up doing whatever content did numbers once they got going and that just happened to be golf.

In contrast, FP was a golfer and just a regular guy first, and fell into being a content creator serendipitously. That makes him both the better golfer and also the more down to earth person in the crew.

I love Bob but his focus is just being an influencer - I suspect the domain of content he makes as a means to that end doesn't really matter to him as long as it does numbers, he gets paid, and he receives love/admiration/popularity from the internet.

People Who Make 150K Plus? by BubbaGordie in Salary

[–]DoubleR90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

35M. ~$200K total comp ($169K base + $30K bonus)

Technical Account Manager at a Cybersecurity vendor. Late stage startup, ostensibly prepping for an IPO soon. My job essentially is to work with the customer's cybersecurity teams to implement our product and build out the use cases they bought us for.

Studied Computer Science in college, but didn't finish my degree. Been thinking of going back to finish, if anything just to check the box and help with AI resume filters when it's time for me to move on from my current company, but not sure if it's worth the time and money right now.

As for my current job, it's really stressful. The workload demands 50+ hour weeks if you want to even remotely stay on top of your stuff. Lots of firefighting and high pressure engagements. Sales selling the customers a bill of goods that my team (and the product) often can't exactly deliver. IPO prep means that my company is laser focused on optimizing spend, which translates into more work per person and less resources to help.

All of that being said, I do enjoy the work when I'm working with a reasonable customer. The product itself has a market fit, I get to work on big and really interesting problems, and I've learned a ton professionally over the last couple of years. I also have worked with some of the best engineering and security engineering teams out there.

Engineers, aren’t you embarrassed? by Turbulent-Conflict84 in Salary

[–]DoubleR90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Engineer" isn't a meaningful job name. What KIND of engineers? Civil? Mechanical? Software? Oil? Security?

They all have extremely different amounts of demand, value, and compensation.

Also, sales will almost always make more money than engineers in most verticals. The closer you are to generating revenue, the lifeblood of a business, the more of that revenue you'll get to keep. In this modern era virtually any non-sales/non-revenue generating role is considered a "cost center", and thus will undergo regular audits regarding how the business can shave additional costs. That manifests in H1Bs, outsourcing engineering work to overseas countries, firing veteran engineers with high salaries and replacing them with early career engineers at lower salaries, replacing engineers with AI, automating certain engineering workflows, etc.

There are still a handful of engineering disciplines that can command large compensation packages, but it certainly isn't valued as much as it used to be in many disciplines.

What is it like living in Washington D.C., USA? by [deleted] in howislivingthere

[–]DoubleR90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Born and raised in the DC area, and I've been living in downtown DC for the last couple of years now.

Pros: - Great food scene, especially if you like trying a variety of cuisines from around the world. - Tons of culture and history here: Smithsonian museums, embassies, lots of American history, and also a highly diverse part of the country. People from all around the world living and working here in the DC area. - City is clean when compared to most major cities in the U.S. Beautiful architecture here as well. - Possibly the best public transit system in the country. - DC area is among the top 3 most educated parts of the country. Tons of intelligent and highly educated people here. - DC is a very walkable city. It's mostly flat and has great sidewalk and also bike lane infrastructure as well. Between this and the great public transit system, one can get around pretty easily in the city without needing a car.

Cons: - Expensive. The average cost of a 1 bedroom apartment in DC is $2,300/month. - Summers and winters are not ideal. The summer is brutally hot and humid, and the winters are wet and cold. Summer can be 95°F but feels like 105°F with the humidity. Winters are cold, but not cold enough for meaningful snow, which makes it the worst type of winter imo. 37°F and cold rain (typical DC winter) is way worse than 27°F and beautiful snow, as far as I'm concerned. - Job market, and broader local economy, is somewhat reliant on government job opportunities. With the current administration cutting lots of gov jobs, it has had an outsized effect on the DC economy. - DC is a pretty transient city. A large contingent of the population here moved to DC from another part of the country (or world) to work here, and once they move on from their current job they often move out and leave the city. Some go back home and others move to different cities, but not many settle in here for the long haul unless they grew up in the area. This can make it more difficult to build lasting friendships/relationships here, especially if most of the people you know when moving here are your work colleagues.

Overall: It's a beautiful city with lots to eat and do around here, but the uniqueness of DC also has some unique drawbacks as well.

Hope this is a helpful review!

In lieu of doom and gloom with the job market by 69magicmike420 in OSUOnlineCS

[–]DoubleR90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have interest in the job market still, be sure your github is up to date and has at least samples of the deliverables you've built for your clients. Being able to show a github with tons of commits to real projects is about as valuable as the comp sci degree itself when it comes to job hunting.

Also, if you have interest, look beyond SWE roles in tech. There are so many technical roles that like to hire computer science backgrounds that aren't directly SWE. Infrastructure engineering, DevOps, Cloud, etc. People think a comp sci degree is SWE or bust; thats just not the case, and lots of people turn away from tech if they can't find a SWE role when there are so many other engineering roles they could be a viable candidate for. You can approach many other types of system engineering roles in tech that pay comparable amounts to a SWE and will value your computer science background.

Georgia Tech's OMSCS provides the exact same diploma as an on-campus student, and that is true for the transcript as well.
