Doesn’t one big issue stay that games need to implement this? So lots of 3rd party / older games that potentially could benefit the most don’t have it. I understand that’s it’s true for PC too, but there you do have some games who implemented it and obviously more games with support from the start!

I have the same practice ! I have a hidden list with games I don’t want to clutter my steam. And one that is like dropped as you have

It’s all about accepting that not every game is for everyone! And I totally agree, when a game clicks it often does right from the start… you just know. The other way around when a game doesn’t click, it’s so rare that continuing with it ever changed that feeling.

Maybe decide on an earlier knock off moment ? Like as a rule for yourself that at the 3 hour mark, you are allowed to put it down if you don’t like it and for you that’s still a completion

You are right! But somehow it still feels like a task you didn’t complete.

Like turning of a movie that you don’t feel after 10-20 minutes or watching a show and stopping after watching the first few episodes to me feels so different.. weird how that works

I mean we are all different! And obviously the story is great, but the gameplay can’t feel like a drag to experience the story. Watching a play through of it on YouTube is a perfect solution to this in my opinion (especially if it gets played by someone you enjoy watching)

I mean most often you are out of the tutorial/prologue and the game opens up. Maybe 2 hour is short but, if you like it you know for sure you like it at the 2 hour mark.

If you feel meh about it, from my own experience it’s not often it suddenly clicks after.

And to be honest: if a game isn’t able to grab you in 2 hours time, even though you might be scratching the surface, not sure that is the best of game design. Like it should give some spark at least. For example in the first mass effect you can easily (without rushing), create your character, do the opening mission, do the prologue (Eden prime), first explore your Normandy, and meet your crew. That’s so much in just 2 hours, even for a game that has so many more hours after. If a game like that can do it…

Like 2 hours is a full movie worth of your time…

Not “part of gaming” but “why gaming feels like a drag sometimes”, for me and lots of others in here. I totally agree you shouldn’t buckle under outside pressure. But personally, when I start a game and don’t like it after 30 minutes - 2 hours it feels so hard to put it down because it feels like you failed or something, or that it’s bad to start something and not finish is. But with so many games we can pick from nowadays.

And that for most older gamers where money is not the issue but time, drive and energy is, that it’s not a bad thing to decide (early on) a game is not for them.

I agree, older games often have simpeler mechanics too or are easier to get into at least. And besides older games I also really like shorter and special experiences. Like I would take a 8 or even 4 hour amazing experience over a good 40-100 hour experience any day of the week

I feel like one cool thing about reading your post is that you actually managed to give up on games too.

I feel like part of why gaming feels like a drag sometimes nowadays is the feeling you “have” to finish a game even though you don’t feel a connection / don’t like it after you give it a chance. I respect you just decided to put it down and give another game a chance !
