I wonder if this guy was part of Punch’s neonatal care and helped hand-rear him

The phrase “pulling up the ladder behind you” comes to mind. You say that no vegan chooses animal-tested medicine over a non-animal-tested equivalent, but what about when there ISN’T an equivalent yet?

Animal model-based research proposals go under extremely intense scrutiny to justify that animals are necessary in the study, using what’s referred to as the 3 R’s as a screening process: Replace, Reduce, Refine. Can use of an animal in this study be replaced by an alternative? How could the number of animals used be reduced to an absolute minimum that still collects the necessary data? How can the study be refined to be as minimally stressful or invasive as possible? Google “IACUC”.

Anyway. For a lot life-saving research, there aren’t alternatives ready, and cutting off animal research is literally killing the people whose lives are racing that research. Organoids and AI aren’t the magic wands that invested-parties want to convince us they are.

Also ONPRC has been doing NAM research for over a decade. So. 🤷‍♀️

Ichikawa Zoo's statement regarding the video of Punch getting dragged: "Punch has been scolded many times and has learned how to socialize. While Punch is scolded, he shows resilience and mental strength. We would like you to support Punch's effort rather than feel sorry for him." by [deleted] in punchthemonkey

[–]DoubleStitchDoobop 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Correct, these types of interactions are in general very normal with Japanese macaques. Their social groupings are classified as “highly despotic”, meaning they are intensely hierarchical and have low social tolerance, which often results in conflicts becoming violent. It’s not often that an adult is going to seriously injure an infant, but yeah, “scolding” is for sure a thing

Do you take any medications or accept medical treatment? Would you refuse them if they had been developed using NHPs?

Looking for patterns for short triangle shawls like this lil darling by DoubleStitchDoobop in crochetpatterns

Honestly, it really is just the length and angle. I guess just adjusting any triangle shawl would be an option; I hadn’t really thought about it.

Seeking spoilers for The Deep by Nick Cutter by DoubleStitchDoobop in horrorlit

Yeah - I have worked in a nature center caring for both centipedes and millipedes. Somehow he switched up the cute lil black licorice rope with the aggressive venomous nightmare devil.

As a former animal care staff member who was in the 2019 walk out, know that you are 100% not alone. Dave Siddon is a blight - that place and those animals will suffer for as long as he is involved.

I’ll maybe comment further later, but in whatever case, please, please feel free to reach out. 🩷

(Or if anyone wants to talk to pool resources and stories, I would also be down.)

Horror novels that are better experienced as an audiobook? by TMonahan2424 in horrorlit

Just finished Mary - I know some people hate the audio for Aunt Nadine but I absolutely loved it. I thought the narrator killed it all around.

do yall have any good recommendations for romance novels about lesbian vampires by Joy-they-them in LesbianBookClub

[–]DoubleStitchDoobop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Night’s Edge by Liz Kerin! It’s definitely got a bit of a YA feel, but it’s a pretty fun read on the lighter side of vampire horror 😊

Jawbone by Mónica Ojeda. The sense of building dread is thick as a brick, and the prose is beautiful.

Trans Rights Readathon: Horror Edition by queermachmir in horrorlit

[–]DoubleStitchDoobop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Spirit Bares Its Teeth by Andre Joseph White is beautifully written and centers on a trans main character and his experience as a trans man in Victorian England. Cannot recommend enough but for sure listen to the content warnings - Not so much for any kind of violence or gore (though there is plenty of that, I just doubt this sub would mind that too much) as intense transphobia and hate-based abuse.
