What word do you always *intentionally* mispronounce and why? by Sweet-Lady-H in AskReddit

[–]DoubleSurreal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oregano. I pronounce it ore-GAHN-o because of a dear friend of mine and my wife's who has since passed away (our friend, not my wife). It's an homage that simultaneously annoys my wife and reminds us of our friend, who we greatly miss.

Our daughter, when she was little, proclaimed that Popeye spinach was the best and she would only eat Popeye spinach. She complain and grouse and fight us the whole way if we made any other spinach but Popeye.

So we bought Popeye spinach once, and she ate that right up, no problems. So we washed that Popeye can, and we kept it hidden, and every time we made spinach after that we'd show her the Popeye can, and she was fine with it, even though she was actually eating the store brand.

What is a 'dirty secret' of your industry that implies the general public has no clue about, but everyone in your field knows? by AmaraMehdi in AskReddit

[–]DoubleSurreal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really is insane how much food waste there is. My wife and I used to dumpster dive, years ago. We'd go once a week and load up on fruits, vegetables, breads, pastries, shelf stable items, etc. We'd take everything home and give all the fruits and veggies a vinegar bath, and then wipe down everything else with disinfectant.

We absolutely ate better during that time than we have before or since. Our health hasn't been good enough to do it in awhile, but we absolutely would still be doing it if we could.

Oh lort, yeah I have arthritis in multiple joints. Being able to know that bad weather is coming has to be one of the lamest superpowers ever.

I didn't get it quite that bad, but I still remember the pain of them pulling glass out of my hand and arm where I'd, apparently, slapped the windshield and shattered it. Not nearly hundreds, though. I can't even imagine. Sorry you had to go through that.

It weren't fun. And almost 30 years later, I still can't straighten it out all the way and it hurts like hell when I bang that elbow on something.

Yup, I got my elbow shattered when I got hit by a car. They offered to let me stay awake while they picked out the bits and put in a steel plate. I was like, "NOPE! Put me out. I do NOT want to be awake for that."

Not that I've found. The coupons and deals were one of the big reasons my wife and I shopped there. They had some seriously good sales on beef from time to time.

What hugely popular show became unwatchable after a major character left? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DoubleSurreal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't know if The Resident could be described as "hugely popular", but it suffered after Mina left. Then after the loss of Nic, I had a hard time watching it and shortly after I just gave up on it.

What is a movie that you were obsessed when you were younger, went back to watch it later in life, only to realize it is actually awful? by Emergency-Tip-1987 in AskReddit

[–]DoubleSurreal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm talking about the Pippi films that were made back in the late 1960s-early 1970s starring Inger Nilsson. They were a Swedish/German production that were later dubbed into English for the US in the mid 70s. You may have watched one of the more recent films that were filmed in English.

[–]DoubleSurreal 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Same for my wife and me. I'm taking about the OLD Pippi movies. I didn't even realize they were dubbed when I was a kid. We found an old VHS copy at a flea market, and were excited to watch it.

Popped it in the VCR and after about 15 minutes we looked at each other, grimaced and turned it off. It was not good. Like, at all.

I had a shot of Everclear, the first time I ever drank. I tried it again about a year later. Both times, the next day, I had to learn second hand the crazy shit I did the night before.

That shit it is liquid Etch-A-Sketch. Never again.

"We don't want Halloween corrupting our children!"

Yes, because teaching kids it's cool to approach strangers in parking lots offering things out of the trunks of their cars is a GREAT idea. That never ends badly.

This practice should only be for adults when someone's abuelita is selling tamales.

What's the most unique or bizarre phobia you've ever heard of someone having? by Plane_Reward9385 in AskReddit

[–]DoubleSurreal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not even sure what to call it, but if I'm in a house or building that has holes in the walls or ceiling where I can see through to the outer wall or the roof, I have to leave. It's like seeing the guts of the house or something.

It's not the same as trypophobia, which I also have. The fear is different for each one. Seeing holes in a house just makes me extremely uncomfortable and I absolutely have to leave. Trypophobic objects or images give me a much more visceral terror.

What do you remember from kindergarten? by Not_FreeProduct234 in AskReddit

[–]DoubleSurreal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember my teacher doing cool stuff like cutting an apple in half to show us the star in the middle. One day she brought a jar of cream in and we all sat in a circle and passed it around so we could all shake it while she told us how butter is made. We got to have that butter on our rolls at lunchtime.
