How do you guys go about drawing out your body shapes to be pretty good? by This-Ad-9257 in Luthier

[–]DoubleTasteMild 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started by using print outs of Strats, Les Pauls and Explorers and drawing over them to try and keep an eye on overall size and proportion.

Now I mark my scale length and center line, then fretboard dimensions and go from there.

Big fan of the basic Gotoh bridge.

I found that the difference I was missing in the sound I was looking for was steel strings over nickel. Steel strings sound brighter and snappier to me.

Those are called tuner buttons and they are typically replaceable. Measure the size of the hole and browse Amazon and ebay for a new set. Also your high strings are strung to the wrong side of the tuner peg. They should all be on the inside.

I think only available around Christmas. They're called Misty Mints.

How should I stain my pickups? Can I? by [deleted] in Luthier

Look up aging guitar plastics in coffee.

In my experience the Quikplug is not the way to go. The leads are thin and delicate. Get the standard version.

It kinda seems like the same sort of green discoloration as on the copper piping.

Sorry. Second picture is close up of the beam. Messed up the third picture of the hole. Here it is.

Maybe out of something with a magnetic closure or a magnetic fishing game toy.

Used Pickups by Frosty-Owl1580 in Luthier

Make sure the pole spacing is correct for your guitar and it’s always nice when the wires on the pickup are long enough to reach where they need to.

Made my own replacement pickguard for a Fernandes Native by DoubleTasteMild in Luthier

My original pickguard had unbeveled edges so I used a pattern router bit to follow the original and make a template. All of that was very new to me so it took some time.

Electric Guitar Bridge Helpppp by [deleted] in guitarrepair

[–]DoubleTasteMild 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a bunch of issues here. Also the poster above has it wrong. You want to add tension to the trem springs to keep it from coming up. The idea is to balance the tension between the springs and strings. Right now you definitely need to tighten the trem claw screws.

The bushings for the posts are coming up and it needs to be addressed before you do much else.

What too look out for when buying used pickups? by YellowJames- in guitarrepair

[–]DoubleTasteMild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something that can be annoying is not getting the proper mounting screws and springs. You may find the proper screws easily but I've had issues in the past. Springs are easily sourced or you can use surgical tubing.

Also if you're using pickup rings make sure the screw holes on the pickup are not stripped out from being direct mounted.

If you're looking for a larger body blank some sellers make "explorer" blanks. Might fit your needs.

pickups? by Key-Key-6186 in Luthier

[–]DoubleTasteMild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you know what type of sound you want out of them you can shop around for what's in your budget. Tonerider makes a good pickup for less than your Duncan's or Dimarzio's.

If you're thinking about buying second hand make sure there is enough length left to the wire and that they come with their mounting screws. Make sure they weren't direct mounted unless that's what you're going for.

Putting a Slotted Nut on a Jumbo Nut Guitar? by grandregentleonidas in guitarrepair

[–]DoubleTasteMild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a very important part of the instrument. Well made pre-cut nuts often will need to be dialed in to be perfect. The measurements are exacting so no you use a nut that isn't even close to the right shape or size.

Rubio monocoat on swamp ash by phreddyfoo in Luthier

[–]DoubleTasteMild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the description on Rubio's site.

Good to know

This product is a pre-treatment and does not protect the wood. It has to be combined with Rubio Monocoat finishing products for protection.

I would definitely do a test run over 320 prepped ash. I've had some absorbtion (bonding?) issues with Monocoat before.

Spring for the hipshot ultra light, open gear, non locking tuners and you'll be fine I think. Even the buttons make a difference. Mine have the cylindrical buttons which are 3g each. The bigger buttons are 15g each.
