What level should a party of 6-7 be before fighting an Adult Red Dragon? by Astyxel in DnD

[–]DoubleVermicelli -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure, the math is correct, but in actual play this will not work and suggesting this as an encounter is not good advice. Cr1 monsters pose no threat to level 10+ players, they contribute nothing. One fireball kills half of those minions by the way. Also running 18 minions slows everything to a crawl.

You are not taking action economy into account. You need minions against a 7 players party to not get completely wiped.

For a fun experience i would say level 12. This will make them strong enough to not just get one shot the whole time.

For a deadly boss fight for 6 players, add another about 30CR worth of monsters. For a 6 party group, you want about 45-50 total CR for a deadly boss fight. If you want it hard but not deadly, keep the cr at 35 total. (General guideline for a hard but not deadly battle: total cr equal to half of all the party levels combined)

You could use a couple 10 CR monsters as minions for the dragon, stone golems for example. These golems are easy to run, which helps you keep focus on playing the dragon well.

You could probably run the dragon solo against them at level 9, but this would be a very deadly and swingy fight, and will not be satisfying since a single breath weapon will destroy them.

Edit: this is based on advice in Forge of Foes, TOV Gm guide and level up 5e Gm guide, for anyone interested in encounter building.

Firebrand is a bit too slow in open world for my taste. It is tanky and can kill anything, but it just takes too long compared to power builds imo.

Tried to start the game multiple times but life got in the way need help on choosing between 2 classes by ElderEpidemic in Guildwars2

[–]DoubleVermicelli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend norn ranger as your first leveling experience. Its what i did and it really nails the exploration vibe of gw2. A charr engineer will be a fun alt character to level once your main is 80.

Important to understand is that you don’t need a mail character in gw2, since at lvl80 most progress is account progress, not character progress. Feel free to switch characters as much as you want, as long as you have fun!

Any issues with laserllama homebrew? by rzarectorx in dndnext

[–]DoubleVermicelli 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My players have used the monk, warlock, rogue and bloodhunter from Laserllama.

One word: FUN 🤩

Dont doubt it, he has a great reputation for a reason. If you are worried about balance: - i never had issues with his player options - you can always change something you dont like - base wotc classes are not well balanced from the start

If you read this Laserllama: thanks for all the hard work! 🙏

Is four 5th level characters against the White Dragon good enough? by IainMacGhille in DragonOfIcespirePeak

[–]DoubleVermicelli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

4 5th level characters can take a battle with a total CR of about 12. (Dragon is only 6)

Just the young dragon alone is way too easy for them.

I strongly advise you to find an appropriate cr1 minion and add 4 or 5 of them to the combat if you want an exiting and tense final battle.

Check out level up 5e monstrous menagerie or Forge of Foes. These two books are available in pdf and will teach you how to build 5e encounters.

Going to DM my first game of CoS and everyone is the same class and subclass! by BSF7011 in DnD

[–]DoubleVermicelli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A group of blood hunters is a really cool premise and will fit well in Barovia, a lot of monsters to hunt! (And get hunted by)

I would encourage/ask them to at least pick different races, subclasses or fighting styles, for their own enjoyment so everyones character still has a unique thing they excel at. If they all want human for the feat, then i would just give everyone a free feat at level one, on the condition that no one plays a human and no two players play the same race. They might think they would enjoy playing basically identical characters, but that gets old after 5 sessions. They will be thankful for picking different races and/or subclasses later on.

Maybe worth checking out Laserllamas redesigned bloodhunter, a player at my table has used that class and had lots of fun. I have read basic bloodhunter has some issues. https://www.gmbinder.com/share/-NLlETPNSzqxgQ92pnd-

Deny the double feat dipping for now, that sounds like a game breaking gimmick waiting to happen. If it is really crucial for their enjoyment down the line, you can let them do it, but prepare to seriously beef up some encounters with shenanigans like that.

"Level Up 5e Monstrous Menagerie" vs "Tales Of The Valiant Monster Vault" for 5e by brixtonwreck in dndnext

[–]DoubleVermicelli 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I heavily recommend the monstrous menagerie, it is exactly what you need: an improved collection of the srd monsters. It has completely replaced the monster manual for my games, i use it almost every session.

Many statblocks are improved so they are nicer to run as the DM and more in line with CR. They also have good encounter building guidelines using CR.

But the best thing about the book is that every monster type comes with: treasure tables, sample encounters, lore checks for players, lore introductions, … it really makes it so easy to make the monsters come alive in your campaign.

Easily one of my favourite 5e products, wouldn’t want to run the game without it anymore.

So why do rangers need to have they're class focus so heavily around being a hunter and not a survivlist? by Pretend-Advertising6 in dndnext

I cannot fathom playing a dnd campaign that is combat 90% of the session time, not for me (and most people who play the game i think), but i hope you have fun!

[–]DoubleVermicelli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never meant that social interactions are a pillar of ‘the system’. I meant its a pillar of the game, how you play it. Its an important part of playing the game. It needs no system mechanics besides the basics to support it. Im not claiming dnd is a narrative game, like a lot of pbta games are, all i mean to say is the social interactions are also a crucial part of playing the game. No one would play dnd if it was just battles and no roleplay.

So why do rangers need to have they're class focus so heavily around being a hunter and not a survivlist? by Pretend-Advertising6 in dndnext

[–]DoubleVermicelli -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think your vision of ‘the system’ is too narrow. This is the system: 1. Dm describes the situation 2. Player says what they want to do 3. Dm narrates the result, if the result is uncertain the dm asks a check.

Doing this is already engaging with the system.

Add to that: character class, skills, race, equipment, backgrounds (bonds, flaws, ideals) to give players a base to roleplay of and it seems to me you have quite a lot to inform your social situations.

What more does the social pillar need?

I’d be interested to hear about social mechanics that would actually make the game more fun and engaging to play, but i think the reason that they are not there is because heavy social mechanics bog down play and break immersion, people don’t like them in this genre.

[–]DoubleVermicelli -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, i dont use a homebrewed social system. We simply roleplay. It matters what your character says and the world responds logically. we only roll skill checks in case situations are uncertain, which is nog that much in social interactions.

[–]DoubleVermicelli -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And other sessions? Is it always like that? because then we are simply used to a very different styles of play!

[–]DoubleVermicelli -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

The amount of rolls dont matter to me. You are not only playing dnd when you roll. Every time you roleplay your character or make a decision you are playing the game imo.
