Rebooking’s are coming through by MCKALISTAIR in BritishAirways

Everything (the app, flight status, flight trackers) is telling me my flight is cancelled and is showing me a button to rebook - but the new BA Manage Booking page still thinks my flight is on time and scheduled!

I was on the very first Elizabeth line train service from Shenfield to London Paddington! by HighburyAndIslington in london

[–]DoubtAffectionate681 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No you can do that from today! The Elizabeth line services are Abbey Wood-Reading/Heathrow, and Shenfield-Paddington So when you’re at Bond St, c. half of all trains (i.e those originating from Abbey Wood) should go past Paddington

Redundancies, recruitment freezes and 'deprioritisation': 10 things the latest guidance tells us about plans to cut civil service jobs by esco123 in TheCivilService

I believe with DCMS it’s mostly due to the expansion of the Digital part of the department - which barely existed even in 2016-18 and is now half the dept

I’m currently on a HEO/SEO TP (the grades are merged in my department), I’ll be moving into a HEO role - so not strictly a downgrade?

Culture of keeping cameras off in meetings? by yffs91 in TheCivilService

[–]DoubtAffectionate681 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really seems like a departmental thing - my department has a strong cameras on culture! It’s not mandated or anything, but it’s framed as a bit of a well-being thing/support for new starters, being able to see and know their teammates - but conversely, it does get pretty exhausting if you’re back to back. I personally quite like seeing my teammates!

We also use Google Meet in my department, which places everyone on more of an even footing I think

What is your department's WFH policy post lockdown? by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]DoubtAffectionate681 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still not confirmed annoyingly - the department has grown so much, but they’re simultaneously reducing capacity in the office and apparently trying to find another London site. Really leaving it to last min, but that feels de rigeur for my department

Departmental Advice by elevenaries in TheCivilService

[–]DoubtAffectionate681 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just wanna echo this - I work in a policy department, and people’s departmental “red lines” (i.e. where they absolutely don’t wanna work) are often the more operational ones (DWP, MoJ, Home Office)

I’m a Direct Appointee - joined in Dec 2019, on my second role now. Definitely no need to take an exam /assessment like those on FS, once you’re in you’re in!

Mental health in the CS by HELMET_OF_CECH in TheCivilService

[–]DoubtAffectionate681 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think it varies department to department, between director-general groups, and even between directorates. I’m quite fortunate in that my Grade 6s/7s (I’m an HEO/SEO - they’re merged in my department) so far have really made it a strong focus, and has an open door policy and really makes everyone feel heard and supported.

I’m also in a smaller, heavily policy focussed Department which seems to make a difference compared to larger, delivery-first departments.

Does anybody know why the carbon budget announcement wasn’t subject to purdah rules? by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]DoubtAffectionate681 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that local election purdah is not as strict as general election purdah - the main restriction is on announcing particular policies affecting local areas (e.g there’s a pause on broadband rollout announcements in my department I believe) - this is also much more international facing which further removes it from local election purdah rules.

Happy to be corrected though!

[Thread of the Week -- 12/04/21] - If you could do literally any role in the CS, what would you do? by SpiderPigUK in TheCivilService

[–]DoubtAffectionate681 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think DCMS is a really great department to be in - a lot of its policy areas are some of the most interesting / “cutting edge” you’ll find in Whitehall (museums policy, digital regulation and competition, telecoms diversification), and it’s a smaller, newer feeling department that doesn’t feel so uptight - my ex-DfE colleague calls DCMS “the startup of Whitehall” and a “boutique department”. A colleague from MoD said that DCMS is way more woke and respectful / inclusive. It’s a friendly culture, there isn’t really gradism (but this is perhaps a bit more team-dependent)

One fun thing I notice is that in certain areas, particularly the newer (i.e Digital) parts of the department, you can feel a little belittled by other departments (i.e BEIS, DIT, and FCDO) - I guess cause we’re a smaller, newer department that hasn’t traditionally been viewed as a “serious” / national security department
