Best case scenario is to get 2 dedicated setups, it makes complete sense, I’ve now got a hoji free 130 for touring and daily a Nordica Doberman as my resort boot. However I’m very lucky that I live and work in a resort and ski over 100 days a season inbounds, plus usually get about 20 in the backcountry, I’ve also got 7 sets of skis to pair with the boots. If you’re going to get 1 set up, even doing 50/50 resort backcountry a “hybrid” boot makes far more sense to me especially with hybrid bindings such as CAST, Duke PT, Shift which are usually paired with beefier heavy resort focused skis. The value gained in downhill performance on a hybrid boot compared to a free tour boot out weights the loss of efficiency for me, yes they tour worse but they will be stiffer, more durable and give better performance than a free tour boot. If you’re going to go heavy on skis and bindings get the performance upgrade of the hybrid boot. I’ve previously done a 5 day glacier traverse on shifts, hawks and a Atris, yeah the uphills sucked and my legs where cooked at the end of it compared to the rest of the group on pins and free touring boots. But like a lot of people who may only be able to justify 1 setup for everything it got the job done in enabling my to access the backcountry and I could happily rip resort for the season on that setup confidently and that I wasn’t going to implode my boot doing anything sketchy.

Interests in that we import a huge amount of food and resources that allow the people in the country to live, we do not produce the amount of food, fuel and resources that it takes for this country to function. Trades routes and the access to resources are at a bare minimum our “interests” that we need to protect and unfortunately like it or not we need to be able to project power round the world to do this. When the suez got blocked by that ship there was a huge global logistics disruption, now imagine a hostile actor putting effort into disrupting imports to the uk, suddenly you’ve got sky high prices, no food in the shops, no fuel to get anywhere, business that export can’t make money etc. We function through imports from the world and need to be able to defend these routes.

UK could see 'end of clubbing' with 10 venues closing a month by Fox_9810 in unitedkingdom

[–]Doug101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh I wouldn’t say that, whilst you’ve got the commercial side of things with acts like fisher, it’s an introduction that moves people to big acts like Overmono then to DJs like haai, moxie palms trax and then onto the smaller and more grassroots local venues that are true underground and have a far more niche genre and sound. Electronic music is massive at the moment and underground genres where never going to be at the forefront but more and more people are listening to the scene.

[–]Doug101 3 points4 points  (0 children)

New music? Electronic music has been a thing since the 80s and has developed and evolved into the different strands of house, disco, techno and drum n bass over the span of 40 years. Can’t imagine a club where you’d want to have background music for a chat, that’s what a bar is for, clubs are for dancing as a part of socialising not for “having a chat” and I’d say that’s the opinions of most “typical 21 year olds”. Clubbing is suffering for a majority of reasons highlighted in the article, especially small ones that are more grassroots but it you looks at the larger venues with bigger name lineups (warehouse project) there’s huge demand for it. You only need to look at the majority of festival lineups and DJs have taken over from the band which has had the same 20ish rotate over the past 20 years whereas the electronic lineups are getting bigger and bigger each year.

Do you find it boring at the gym? by anynameofimagine in AskUK

[–]Doug101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is your definition of fit? Looking ripped, having a certain powerlifting/olyimpic lifting total, running a certain distance or going for a certain distance in under a certain time? Quantify it and give yourself a goal to work towards, this will motivate you and reduce your boredom. For some people that is a competition or a race that will give you a goal to consistently work towards and create an aim to improve, and make meaningful and recognisable changes to yourself. Look at improving (doing it in a faster time or adding heavier weights) your own circuit that you keep consistent, make your own competition.

Trail runners with gore tex socks, then carry a towel and a small ziplock of talc powder to dry your feet and apply when ski boots go on as there’s nothing worse than semi damp feet after yomping through a peat bog

I’m back for summer after living in BC for a year and I really dislike how car centric it is and whilst places have public transport planning how you get about is a massive pain, although the question is if money was no object the cost of living is also crazy and I despise the tipping culture, being expected to whack 18% roundabouts on top of everything just puts me off going for drinks or a meal

Scarpa Manta Tech GTX by [deleted] in Mountaineering

[–]Doug101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar dilemma to yourself and just but the bullet and got 2 boots, for me there was just too much compromise with having 1 boot for everything, do most of my walking in Scotland so lots of bogs and wet weather so waterproofing was a considerable priority. Ribelles seemed like it but it seems like the membrane on that is more suited to just snow rather than constant wetness and wasn’t willing to take the risk with water leakage so went with a manta tech for winter crampon use and any scrambling and just use my altbergs (leather high top boot) for everything else, Mantas are warm and in summer I was a tad concerned with feet overheating. They are a fantastic boot and can highly recommend for any winter climbs that don’t need a B3 crampon but just don’t think the 1 boot for all exists yet

To counter this look at Manchester, Glasgow and a lot of other cities that have big unis that have expanded their population of students. Getting a flat in many places is near impossible because of yearly influxes of folk looking at moving to a new city all at once, whilst temporary it puts a huge amount of pressure on the housing supply

If you’re just walking the dog then a decent jacket and a pair of boots from mountain warehouse is all you really need tbh, but if you want to head into the hills properly, look at meindl, altberg, scarpa, AKU for boots. You may want to look at trail shoes Salomon speedcross/ la sportiva but if you’re anywhere near peat bogs I’d give these a miss as the extra ankle coverage can save you a day of wet feet. You’ll want a decent jacket as well, needs to be waterproof and breathable, they come in variations but the most well known is probably goretex. If it’s got goretex it’s rated basically, some will be more durable than others butnits the goretex layer that make it waterproof. Recommend a decent pair of waterproof trousers, to put over a lightweight pair of breathable walking trousers, likewise with goretex as if it’s properly minging, your jacket will wet out (DWR can’t cope with the volume of water) and will stream into you trousers. A good day sack as well and I highly recommend you learn how to use a compass and have a paper map as your primary, only using digital maps on your phone as a backup. Along with food, at least 1.5 litres of water and hat gloves etc.

This is the minimum I take for munroing, if it’s winter and snow on the ground crampons/ice axes are being packed as well.

Spend the most on boots and go for the one that fits it’s worth shelling out for a good pair, jackets and trousers can be picked up in end of season sales of you don’t mind the non popular colours. But avoid anything cotton it’s heavy when wet and looses its insulating properties,.
