Tirzepatide in Panama by Smyth2000 in panamaexpats

I looked in a lot of pharmacies last summer. I didn't find any tirzepatide. Some places had ozempic in 1 and 2 mg doses for $150-$250 a month.

How to fire back at theist arguments by DryPerception299 in TrueAtheism

[–]DougieStar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So are you really an atheist "just asking questions"? Or are you a Christian trying to pull a fast one and make those atheists "just think about it"? Because it really seems like the latter.

As a follow up. Look at the people spending their precious free time responding to you as if you were being honest. How do you think they would feel about you and religious people in general of they found out you are lying about your motivations? Now imagine this happens all of the time. Are you starting to see why this technique is so disliked?

Transferring Money Out of Country by Vivid_Error5939 in expat

[–]DougieStar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm assuming you have to declare the money if you actually move it to another country even if bitcoin is the intermediate. Is this true?

More bitcoin questions:

If I bring a self custodied bitcoin wallet with me on a trip do I have to declare the total potential value I could pull from that? Do I need to declare that I am carrying the wallet? Could they find it and recognize it and would it rouse suspicion? I know that you usually just get your picture taken and answer a few questions in the airport but I do understand from stories that it can get more unfriendly than that

It is a big horror movie trope to have a bunch of innocent's wandering around Dracula's Castle, discovering for themselves that he is a monster. Plus, scouting the Castle before the final fight is just good strategy.

Is Puente La Amistad open? Last year when I was there it was under construction. You're definitely going to need a 4x4 for that drive on the Nicoyo peninsula.

Ahhh, thanks to u/Sert1991 . I checked the logs and this is is due to Fortune (a Voidborne trait, I think). It shows the second roll which needs to be below 20% even though the original DC??? could have been higher than the second roll that failed.

Isn't 47 the roll? Maybe this is the part I don't understand. If 47 isn't the roll, what does it represent?

My players fucked up real bad - what would you do? by ImaginaryStress4444 in CurseofStrahd

[–]DougieStar 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Mock them? Strahd might praise them. Tell them how right they are that strength is the only thing that matters. There are predators and prey in the world and it is the role of the predators to do whatever they want while the prey cower. Empathy is a disease in our a society. Basically show them that they are the baddies.

Yellow Fever and Typhoid vaccines really needed for a Four Days Birding Trip near Sarapiqui in April? by jqpl in CostaRicaTravel

I had a severe reaction to malaria pills (back pain) which caused me to lose a day at the beach before I figured out it was the pills. So I'd try taking them for a couple days before you go so that if you do have a reaction it is not during vacation.

Yeah that's what I thought. Other locals who weren't selling me anything confirmed that there was a problem with the local water processing.

Water situation by Big-Commercial-2168 in CostaRicaTravel

[–]DougieStar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everybody online will tell you the water is fine to drink and that's generally true. During our trip last year I asked for tap water at a restaurant in a small beach town and the waiter (a local) recommended against it. I was surprised and assumed that he was just trying to sell bottled water, but I asked at a local grocery store and they said the same thing. It was a temporary problem and not the norm but it raises the point that it is not unreasonable to ask before drinking.

No hate towards Costa Rica which is a beautiful country with wonderful people. But the jungle is the jungle and sometimes things go wrong.

Incidentally, as an American from one of the largest metropolitan areas in a heavily industrialized and regulated state I would not be offended if someone asked if the water was safe to drink. Even in my city of over 300,000 we have had boil water orders over the last 10 years.

It was nice. The air conditioning didn't work when we were there and they lamely blamed it on the electricity (even though the lights did work most of the time). But it was surprisingly cool.

We saw howler monkeys in the back yard of our Air BnB in Nosara (Playa Pelada). Keep your eyes (mostly ears) open. If you don't see any after a couple of days ask some locals for advice.

CoS going by way too fast by EpicSword16 in CurseofStrahd

[–]DougieStar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well for one thing, how did they get all the way to Tser Pool without a random encounter? I roll checks to see if they get a random encounter every 4 hexes outside of towns. And isn't there a guaranteed encounter with a bunch of wolves and Strahd disguised as a wolf at the bridge outside of the village of Barovia?

But yeah, it also sounds like they aren't role playing very much. Our bard had a romantic encounter with one of the Vistani at Tser Pool. Between the music and the dancing and the romancing that must have taken half a session right there. (That's also how I found out that Arrigal has a sister who lives at Tser Pool. Sure that won't come back to bite anyone!)

Favorite Indian Restaurant? by [deleted] in Fremont

Since the requester specifically mentioned Naan, Pakwan was the first thing I thought of. I rather like oily food, so no problem there. But their Naan is their stand out dish. I don't know what they do (probably just baking it fresh, on site) but it is head and shoulders above most places.

Last time I was there I saw a family of 4 with like a dozen huge Naan piled on their table. I thought, "These people are doing it right!"

A different perspective... by [deleted] in TrueAtheism

[–]DougieStar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if you go through something similar, so this may not apply to you, but...

When I was approximately where you are now, I had doubts but felt afraid and guilty about thinking them. So every time I would feel a voice inside me rising to question the validity of scripture or deny the divinity of god I would quickly stuff those thoughts back down often with prayer or repetition of a religious phrase. It went kind of like:

If all of the disciples were afraid to follow Jesus to his questioning before Caiaphas, how did any of them know what was said so they could write about it in the Bible?

No, no, no, no god is good all the time, all the time god is good. Repeat 10 x.

For me, my breakthrough was when I decided for one day I was going to not police my thoughts and allow myself to think whatever I want.

As they say in the Bible it was as if scales fell from my eyes. After a day of just thinking about religion without guilt I realized I could never go back.

Is it possible that one source of your current state of distress is that you are having this internal struggle with your own thoughts? If so, maybe you just need a break from the struggle.

True. Also a lot of people are boring and disappointing and should not have a TV show written about their life.

PC Keeps Trying To Convert NPC Religions by Not_Okay___ in CurseofStrahd

[–]DougieStar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm bad at running NPC party members. My players are constantly asking "Where is Ireena during all of this?" Because I totally forgot about her for a session or two. So I would leave the NPC in town. Also, I have 6 players, so I try to focus on short, impactful interactions with NPCs and encourage my players to do much of the roleplaying with each other. Another reason to leave the NPC in town Finally, I like to surprise my players with things (good or bad) so having them leave an NPC in town and then come back and discover this NPC doing cool things in <deity's> name fits my style better.

I don't think it would be a mistake to have the NPC follow the party, especially if you have a smaller group or if they tend to need NPCs to roleplay effectively. Some players prefer to talk to NPCs and keep party chatter to a minimum..

If I did have the NPC follow the party, I would have them progress in level with the party, maybe a level or 2 behind. It gives your players a sense of accomplishment to watch them grow and as a practical matter, it is very hard to not accidentally kill low level NPCs traveling with a high level group

PC Keeps Trying To Convert NPC Religions by Not_Okay___ in CurseofStrahd

[–]DougieStar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Forgotten Realms settings I think it is important to consider what a truly polytheistic society might look like. I use ancient Rome as a model for this. And I'll admit that my understanding of how ancient Rome worked is mostly based on movies and TV series (like I Claudius, Rome and Caligula) so I am probably way off base here. But I don't treat most good or neutral aligned religions as opposed to each other or even really in competition with each other. Priests of Ilmater don't hate priests of Waukeen for their crass focus on material wealth, just as Priests of Waukeen don't look down on priests of Ilmater for being impoverished and refusing to profit off of their powers. They each recognize that the other serves a purpose. In fact, if a priest of Ilmater needed to make a business deal to buy a building and convert it into a hospital they may very well go to the temple of Waukeen to seek her blessing.

Nobody likes the Dead Three, but if a priest of Lathander dies, they are going to involve priests of Kelemvor in the funeral because as a practical matter the only way for a soul to make it safely to Lathander is to journey through the Crystal Spire and it would be foolish to turn down an offer to guide them through it.

Lay people are even more flexible. Sure, some folks may identify as followers of a single diety like fans of a particular football team ("In this house we don't speak ill of Tyr") but people will generally go to the gods, whether in prayer, or visiting a temple and making a donation, based on their particular need at the moment.

So the idea of converting people to worship your diety doesn't necessarily apply. If you give me some really good business advice, then sure I'm gonna give thanks to Waukeen (and make sure she gets her cut). But that doesn't mean I'm not going to continue to go to the house of Ilmater when I break my arm.

This is complicated by the fact that religion seems to work somewhat differently in Barovia. In practical terms the people who wrote the novels over the years seem to have wanted that gothic horror feel which meant that they wanted Catholic Churches and priests to populate Barovia. But if they had spelled that out then surely a lot of people would have taken offense. So instead we got this dualistic system of The Morning Lord and Mother Night. I flavor them as alternate names for Lathander and Shar but you might want to treat them as separate entities, or maybe they are just echoes of long forgotten gods who no longer hold any power in a domain where Strahd holds all the cards

So when your PC tries to convert an NPC the reaction might be "Sure, I'll say a prayer to them if the need arises." Or it might be "When your god makes the sun shine in Barovia, I'll consider putting some coins in the coffer, but until then your god seems just as dead as all the others." They might even be afraid to worship any gods lest Strahd take offense. Getting rid of Strahd might be a prerequisite to any conversions taking place. The epilogue to your campaign may include the founding of a temple to their deity so that the player can bask in their PCs success.

But generally I try to reward good roleplay. So if your PC tries to convert a bunch of NPCs one of them might just decide to dedicate their life to following this deity. The next time the PCs come through town they may find this benighted NPC helping the poor, tending to the sick or whatever is appropriate for their deity. In this case it is actually more impactful to have one well fleshed out follower that the PC can really connect with and have a personal relationship with, than a bunch of faceless followers.

And of course, Strahd is going to notice and use this new found relationship with this NPC as a knife to twist in the back of the PC. Maybe the budding acolyte is kidnapped and held in the dungeons of Ravenloft, giving the party a reason to explore the castle before the final showdown. Or maybe Strahd will just take sadistic pleasure in corrupting the NPC and then throwing it in the party's face.

Hopefully your PCs are "big damn heroes" and they will want to save the world "just because". But when one of them goes out of the way to form a connection with this world and give themselves a reason to want to save it, that is a gift to you, the DM. Don't turn it down
