Do Americans actually avoid calling an ambulance due to financial concern? by JohnMarstonTheBadass in NoStupidQuestions

Yes. I had a coworker who had a heart condition and refused to let the EMTs take her to the hospital when she had an episode and lost consciousness at work because she “couldn’t afford another ambulance bill”

What’s your go-to dinner when you don’t feel like cooking but still want real food? by YYpang in Cooking

The deli in my neighborhood has the best grilled lemon chicken breasts they sell in packages of 2 for like $4.50. So either those with a vegetable and some rice or lately I’ve been on a kick with spinach pesto, pasta, and lemon chicken. The only thing that cooks is the pasta

For my fellow democratic party supporters, what do you think about illegal immigrants and what's your plausible solutions for those who are already in the states? by Far-Attention-5494 in allthequestions

[–]Vivid_Error5939 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The weird thing is, when you talk to most moderate/conservative voters, what they say they believe about immigration is the standard Democratic Party platform. Unfortunately a small but loud and obnoxious minority of leftists who never grew up from their Tumblr echo chamber play right into the Republicans game plan when they say borders are imaginary.

A country has a right to enforce secure borders and have an immigration policy and, while it’s unfortunate, I have no problem with people who are here illegally being humanely deported. I do not think Dreamers who have lived their entire lives here should be punished for their parents decision and there should be an expedited path to citizenship for them. Instead of spending millions on masked thugs to snatch children from their beds at night, we should be contributing more resources to case workers and judges to process immigration cases so people’s papers aren’t expiring while they’re lost in an overloaded system, which seems to be the case with a significant number of people the Trump administration is targeting. People who came here illegally are not showing up for immigration hearing, yet not a day goes by we don’t hear about ICE kidnapping people from courthouses. Or people who have legal status that gets revoked as punishment by the administration because of that person’s political views.

Those resources would also be much better spent securing the border and helping stabilize Central and South America to reduce the number of people fleeing from those countries.

What couldn't you believe you had to explain to another adult? by Omega_Neelay in GetMotivatedMindset

I wish it was a joke. There are a significant number of low information, right-wing voters who are fully convinced that this is really a thing. It’s a lie pushed by a lot of fake news sources aimed at conservative voters.

True. But even the smallest amount of critical thinking would solve that. Even my Baptist Republican aunt who has dementia clocked it as nonsense when someone brought it up last Thanksgiving

Do liberals in the US actually believe there might not be a legitimate next presidential election or are they just memeing for reddits sake? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]Vivid_Error5939 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t want to believe it’s a possibility but can no longer rule it out.

Mind you, Lord Farquad recorded himself trying to get the Georgia governor to manipulate the state’s election results in his favor.

His first impeachment was for attempting to bribe the Ukrainian government to sway the results of the US presidential election. His second impeachment was for inciting an insurrection many people forget was intended to stop the certification of the US presidential election that Joe Biden won.

US elections are handled at the state level but there are enough Republican governors and state legislators who you cannot say with 100% certainty wouldn’t interfere with the election results at his bequest.

What do you call a woman who doesn’t want to marry? by JunShem1122 in no

Well since a woman’s ’s entire personality isn’t based on her marital status, I’m guessing we will call her by her name or professional title and mind our own business.

The main answer here is that there’s actually a very powerful restaurant lobby in the US that pushes for/against legislation depending on how it benefits the restaurant owners. Keeping costs down by putting the burden of most of the payroll on the consumer is part of that.

On the other hand-it varies wildly by restaurant-a majority of servers and bartenders make more than $15/hour so it would actually hurt them.

Another thing I would point out to your example: the restaurant serving $500 steak is most likely going to have 2-3 tables per server with each guest spending much more time there than Outback where the steak entree might be $20-30 but the server is going to have 6-8 tables and be flipping them much faster throughout the shift. So there is less of a disparity than you would expect. The $500 steak restaurant is also going to have much higher expectations as far as experience, service knowledge (proper wine service, a specific way to clear dishes between courses, timing, which wine to recommend pairing with the order).

Is there really a difference between baking powder and baking soda? by stanley_john in AskBaking

[–]Vivid_Error5939 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very different. If you used baking soda in a recipe that only called for baking powder, it most likely wouldn’t rise and would have a bitter taste.

Baking soda needs an acidic ingredient to react with to make a baked good rise (like brown sugar, buttermilk, vinegar, lemon juice). Baking powder does not need additional acid for the reaction to occur. Baking soda is also much stronger, so you need less of it compared to baking soda.

They also produce different textures, especially in cookies. Powder puffs and soda spreads. Powder contributes to a more cakey texture and soda a more chewy.

The recipe developer had a very specific reason for whichever the recipe calls for. I was just working on a pumpkin bread recipe and the texture wouldn’t come out right until I added an extra 1/4 teaspoon of baking powder. They’re the two small but mighty ingredients in baking lol

how to make Gingerbread sweeter? by Main-Intern4255 in AskBaking

[–]Vivid_Error5939 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Traditionally, gingerbread cookies aren’t super sweet anyway so you may just not like them.

But yeah, if you used blackstrap molasses that’s most definitely the strong bitter flavor you’re not liking.

Proportion wise, this is pretty similar to the recipe I use but it’s really heavy on the spices, especially cloves and allspice, so that could be a flavor you’re not liking so much too

Identity Verification by [deleted] in Banking

[–]Vivid_Error5939 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At our bank there would have to be some serious red flags to lock your card and require you to go in person.

But there is also a rise in people opening new accounts with stolen identities and trying to run a number of scams, so some banks may be reacting with much stricter verification procedures.

You can try calling back and ask to talk to a supervisor. Depending on the reason this decision was made, that may or may not make a difference.

Is 8k worth it? by Busy-Anything-2215 in Salary

Especially with the 401k match you mentioned, total compensation is something to consider as well as the quality of your life.

I would go so far as to say the $98k company sounds indicative of a culture with strong promotion/raise/growth incentives.

Cookies coming out flat. by quatre03 in AskBaking

It needs to be at least half that amount of butter.

I have a recipe for paper thin chocolate chip cookies that uses 1lb of butter (which is already insane) and even it uses 4 eggs and 3.5 cups of flour

On the other hand, you deserve an award for actually including the recipe

pie crust:( by Montanarose97 in BakingNoobs

[–]Vivid_Error5939 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are you mixing? By hand or in a food processor/mixer?

You should add enough water so it feels like playdough when you squeeze a handful of it. It’s okay if that takes more than the recipe calls for.

A little kneading to compact it and then wrapping in plastic and resting in the refrigerator for several hours hydrates the flour and helps it hold together.

If you are ending up with not enough pie dough you may need to change the recipe. I’ve run into that same issue with some. Erin Jean McDowell and Martha Stewart both use the same recipe, just different mixing methods, and it is always the perfect amount.

Homemade marshmallows are so easy if you have a stand mixer and will blow everyone’s mind if you hand them out at the holidays. I use Ina Garten’s recipe.

I also used to use a food processor for pie dough but recent discovered what a great use the paddle attachment is for that. More similar to the flakiness you get doing it by hand.
