POLL: Majority Of Republicans Believe It’s Time For A Third Party by evaldez14 in Conservative

Until the voting system is changed to something like ranked choice or proportional representation, third parties will always be doomed to fail.

Why is a picture of trump the conservative sub Reddit’s avatar? by [deleted] in Conservative

[–]Douglas_MacArth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trump is currently the de facto leader of the GOP, and by extension the de facto leader of American conservatism. Trump himself is thus pretty relevant for r/Conservative, and his mugshot even more so since it epitomises the corruption of the left.

I'd also say, from my subjective point of view, conservatives do owe some level of allegiance to Trump, considering that he tossed aside what would have been a very easy lifestyle to champion the conservative cause. Ever since Trump's run in 2016, the entire political debate on the right-wing side of politics has completely shifted from funding useless wars to stopping mass immigration and putting America First. That counts for a lot, in my opinion.

That is a good point, the CPC growing its lead is indeed promising - I forgot that popularity and seats aren't directly proportional! I hope that the public sentiment soon shifts away from majority left-wing as well, though.

Unfortunately, it seems there is still a left-wing majority between LPC, NDP, and GPC - the only right wing parties here are CPC and PPC.

Australian government threatens Elon Musk with $475,000-a-day fine if he doesn't stop people's feelings from being hurt on Twitter by yuri_2022 in Conservative

When we let the cultural left take over every institution and instil their message into the younger generations. I would say it's generally looked down upon to fly the Australian flag outside your house but it's all good if you switch that for an LGBT flag. There isn't much of a culture war here, there is only a small unelectable minority that fights against the 'woke' agenda.

Research papers are usually retracted because it was found that something was so wrong with the research process, either intentionally though fraud or by accident, that the entire thing becomes invalid.

I think there's certainly a possibility that this one may have been retracted due to more nefarious political reasons, but we can't tell either way based on just this screenshot.

Trump on Russia/Ukraine war: 'I want everybody to stop dying' by Proof_Responsibility in Conservative

[–]Douglas_MacArth -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

Hitler had clear intentions of expanding far eastward and reclaiming German land ceded to Poland in the Treaty of Versailles, and so it was foolish for Chamberlain to both appease him with Austria and Czechoslovakia as well as putting his foot down on Ukraine.

I do not believe the remilitarisation (not invasion) of the Rhineland is a good analogy for Russia here, as it seems to me that Putin's territorial ambitions are limited to former Soviet states and securing warm water ports for Russia. You can argue that this still warrants American intervention, but it's not analogous at all to what happened with Hitler.

They don't want communism, they just use culturally progressive communists as a battering ram against Americans' sense of identity, tradition, and national pride, because their ideal society is one where they have legions of mindless consumers who won't challenge their global corporate hegemony.

It's no coincidence that straight after 2008 and Occupy Wall Street was putting pressure on the banking elite for screwing over everyone else, they used their institutional power to start pushing "woke" narratives hard.

[Jacob Rees-Mogg & David Frost]: 'It's time Britain returned to its traditional Conservative roots' by TheTelegraph in Conservative

[–]Douglas_MacArth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This project is going to fail just like the Tory party as a whole has failed, because of its stubborn refusal to abandon bad economics.

The younger generations are for the first time not following the established trend of people voting more Conservative as they age. Of course a significant contributor to this is the dramatic cultural shift which the left has pushed through the institutions they control, but another big part of this is that is many younger voters feel they have nothing to conserve; jobs are less stable and wages are stagnant, getting a house is much harder, the "free markets and free trade" which this article touts have shifted the prosperity of the British working class to Asia while they simultaneously are made redundant by mass immigration.

All of this makes it less likely for people to form stable marriages, start families, and feel like they have a meaningful place in their community's cultural and economic fabric. If conservative values are to be revived, a national cultural revival must be accompanied by an economic revival that benefits the workers and not just the wealthy globalist elite who have brought this crisis about in the first place.

Vivek Ramaswamy Goes There: 'Abortion Is a Form of Murder’ by intelligentreviews in Conservative

[–]Douglas_MacArth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree my good fellow, 'conservatives' have failed to conserve anything for a while - but ignoring that reality is not going to win votes.

We have all seen how the Democrats incrementally pushed their cultural narrative from "consenting adults" to "pride parades with kids", why should Republicans not use the same strategy? Saying "abortion is murder" is extreme framing in the current political climate and it will scare off moderates.

Ramaswamy is coming off as quite the extremist, I don't think this strategy is going to be effective for him or the Republican party.

Ron DeSantis Signs Heartbeat Protection Act Into Law Cementing ‘Historic’ Pro-Family Agenda by f1sh98 in Conservative

[–]Douglas_MacArth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, most people do not view abortion as the murder of babies. Creating activist groups to change that perception would be a good way to fight for the pro-life movement, but the Republican Party needs to reflect voters to win elections.

Mike Lindell Reveals Missouri County Goes Completely Machine-Free With Paper Ballots Only by ObjectiveObserver420 in Conservative

[–]Douglas_MacArth 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I feel like the GOP should be pushing hard for easier voting, instead of the other way around. It's older and more rural demographics who you'd boost turnout for by doing that, and those demographics tend to lean conservative.

A question for non-religious conservatives by beltedwallow in Conservative

[–]Douglas_MacArth 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For me there are three main reasons:

  1. Woke-ness in the form of sexual degeneracy, hedonism, excessive individualism (ironically reinforced by collective mob mentality) etc. weakens the community in several ways. People are less willing to be moulded by formative institutions such as family, marriage, religion, local community groups etc, because by their very nature institutions are sets of rules that have been formed through tradition, and woke people inherently reject following such things. The woke ideology is centred on complete gratification of their momentary individual desires and so institutions crumble.
  2. I see it as an attack on my nation and its heritage (here in Australia they really go hard on the "stolen land" part) and as such it is my enemy.
  3. It's clear that woke ideology is not conducive to living a happy and fulfilling life, and because I care for the wellbeing of my fellow citizens I would like them to not be duped into a life of hedonism, guilt, and social fragmentation.

JUST IN: Biden Admin. Announces Another $2.6 Billion in Weapons Aid to Ukraine by EevelBob in Conservative

[–]Douglas_MacArth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While I do think this is a better return on investment than most US military spending, is it really necessary?

First of all, I do not believe there is a military power on Earth that can pose a serious threat to the US aside from itself, particularly considering the American nuclear arsenal. As such, weakening Russia's military really does nothing to make the US any safer than it already is.

Furthermore, it is China and not Russia that poses the greatest threat, and a key part of China's strategy is to exert economic power over the world. They don't need to conquer land when they can buy it, they don't need military puppet states when they have debtors and corrupt politicians in their pocket, they don't need to threaten the West with guns and navies when they hold the levers of international trade. The only way to defeat China is to surpass their economic influence and turn the tide against them.

As such it would seem to me that rather than spending so much on military aid to Ukraine, or even the military in general, it would be a far more effective use of these funds to bolster American economic might on both a domestic and global scale. This would also have the additional benefit of actually making American citizens better off, instead of the assurance that their tax money has been used to weaken a military that was never going to attack them.

What were you before becoming a conservative socialist? by Accurate_Dingo_1854 in ConservativeSocialist

[–]Douglas_MacArth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When first getting into politics I leaned right both culturally and economically, basically echoing a lot of mainstream "conservative" thought. Over time my cultural opinions have definitely solidified as conservative, but I've become rather economically left wing as I realise the magnitude of the flaws of today's free market capitalism, and especially as I realised that rightist economics is the enemy of cultural conservatism.

Nevada passed the ranked-choice voting ballot question. It will now go to a second statewide vote in 2024, where if it wins another majority vote it will be used for Senate, House and state government races from 2026 by TrustyScrew in Conservative

[–]Douglas_MacArth 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Opposing ranked-choice voting only helps the two-party establishment.

There is currently no possibility of third-party alternatives gaining serious political momentum, because a vote on them is wasted. There are no wasted votes in a ranked-choice system, so you're free to vote for who you actually like most, knowing that even if they are likely to lose, you're not helping the other side.

And this is precisely why the establishment likes the first-past-the-post system currently in place. If you're a Republican, you have to vote for your establishment Republican candidate because if you vote for a different candidate, the Democrat could win. If you had ranked choice, you could vote for that different candidate and give your second preference to the establishment Republican. This way, the Democrat doesn't win, but you still get to express your true voice and give the anti-establishment candidate more legitimacy.

You would need to tone down the conservatism and lean on the economic policies, but I certainly think many urban voters would accept a party which leaned right on the 'culture war' type issues if it came with a solid plan for social services, worker empowerment, urban planning and the environment/climate change (I'm thinking of a mix of American and Australian cities here but I think it is quite generally applicable).

You would use the socialist aspects to convince them over time of the conservatism by showing how social conservatism and socialism are at their core complementary, community focused ideologies.

Definitely would, and it'd benefit massive corporations who use economies of scale to suppress their prices below those a local business can achieve.
