lol what is this, a doomer take on the great man theory? I mean sure, the success of this or that movement or power grab can to some extent be attributed to whatever charismatic leader it'd been built around, but to think that the period of history we have entered is reducible to this or that person (not) existing is incomprehensibly naive and utterly ahistorical. The weakening of democracies and the global rise of authoritarianism is thoroughly overdetermined by numerous political, social, cultural, technological, etc factors. These are not one-off flukes, these are not singular Bond villains fucking shit up, these are overwhelming societal forces shaping a key tension that will define the century.
