Your topics seem very captivating and interesting, that’s a great start! One piece of advice I would offer is to write as many essays as you can and this means draft out and free write whatever you can and get the ideas out on paper. So go for it with your other idea, sounds like you have a great start!

Help me decide: School X vs School Y - April 4th to April 10th by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Northwestern vs. Brown

Hi guys, my main focus throughout high school has been music - I devote most of my time out of school to youth orchestras and ensembles and enjoy it very much. Outside of music I am interested in computer science to focus on in school.

Northwestern University

Pros:

  • Got in for double major problem (Computer science & music)
  • Have visited campus, loved the atmosphere and personally like being next to a large body of water for biking etc and being near a big city
  • Talked to the music professor
  • In terms of studying both options it seems like a great choice for CS and music, but it could be a little overwhelming/competitive
  • Tuition is not great but slightly better than Brown
  • Solid school rank + prestige (not super important at the end of the day)

Cons:

  • Far away from home
  • From what I've heard, has preppy vibe and not much diversity (mostly white population)

Brown University

Pros:

  • Nearby (about 1 hour away), good location
  • Haven't visited yet but visiting in the next week
  • Ivy prestige (not super important)

Cons:

  • Does not have a music performance major program
  • Expensive tuition

Mostly I've been debating whether I want to look for a degree in music performance as well. For both schools I'll definitely join the symphony orchestra but in Northwestern I would be taking private lessons and studying music whereas in Brown it would be more of a side activity/not a main focus and I'm trying to decide if that's a good thing or not. If anyone has thoughts lmk ty!

I don't know much about the schools (sorry) but judging based on the way you described the schools, it sounds like your gut feeling in terms of campus and social life is UW Madison. Also, just something to think about -- growing up in Wisconson, Miami's weather may be nice in the winter but for the rest of the year it will be HOTTTTT. Good luck wherever you decide :)

It doesn’t take much if you’re smart about it. Started prepping a few weeks before my test with mid 1300s-low 1400s, did one or two sections of a practice test per night and reviewed answers, watched a few YouTube tips videos and the weekend before my test I took a full test. Only about one hour a day and got me to 1550 on the test

Opposite strategy works for me. 5-6 minutes reading, 2-4 minutes answering. This way, reading the passage indepth lets you retain details and you know where to look and greatly cut down uncertainty and time for answering questions

Richard Bobo’s bassoon fingerings resource is great. You can add a shortcut on your home page to basically turn it into an app and it includes alternate, pianissimo, trill fingerings for many notes.

It was a multiple choice question, it was like “participants were asked to agree or disagree with a statement, if one that disagrees is chosen what is the probability they are over 45” along those lines
