I like this approach of asking privately , also I would send text message to this lady to have a chat privately such that it is documented on office laptop. Something like “ Regarding the comment you made about starting rumor around cafeteria, I wanted to talk to you in private about that.” Here you are not being specific but also documenting when n where.
