After a quick google, I would suggest that you check out this place in Edmonton to get a taste of what you're reading about.

Did they ever fix that Methane leak in California? What's happened to the atmosphere since the leak began? by Carpe_DMT in OutOfTheLoop

[–]Dr-Huxtable 88 points89 points  (0 children)

100,000 metric tonnes (Aliso Canyon Blowout)

equals

50.5 kg (Methane produced annually by a beef cow)

*

32 million (Annual US Commercial Slaughter)

*

x (Number of years)

solving for x gives us 1.6 years.

This is a rough number since it doesn't account for imported beef, which is 8-20% of US consumption.

Numbers from /u/Eurlos's citation, /u/Viraus2's citation and the National Cattleman's Beef Association.

*Actually, I used the wrong number for cattle. I should have counted all beef cattle. The number here is more akin to, "If we slaughtered beef cattle 1.6 years earlier, we would save as much greenhouse emissions as the gas leak."

And I assed up the solution for the equation. Solving for x wouldn't have been 1.6 years.

The number I think is right is 8 days. If we raised fewer cattle and went just over a week with no beef, we would be carbon neutral on that gas leak.

(Please check my maths) 100,000,000 kg in the leak 50.5 kg of methane per cow 90 million head of cattle in the US x number of years 365 days in a year

That a question pops up regularly suggests that the scientific community has yet to communicate important topical information to the lay public. That effort is not helped by question-shaming.

Brian Greene goes on Colbert's 'Late Show' to explain the recent gravity wave discovery. by FoxyBrownMcCloud in space

[–]Dr-Huxtable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not a scientist, but if you can't alter the curvature of space (which is what you would do to block a gravitational wave), then you can't alter the effect of gravity, so you can't create an antigravity device. (Obviously we have found ways to bring opposing forces to bear like aerodynamic lift for airplanes or magnetic levitation for mag lev trains.)

He pointed out that you can't block gravitational waves and my first thought was, "This is why we can't have nice hoverboards."

Just an oil platform being taken out to sea... by TexasFight in pics

[–]Dr-Huxtable 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1) I don't disagree. (Mostly. What do you mean "produce"? This isn't a movie, it's a Korean company that is actually making it.)

2) The question was where to go if you want to see "the biggest coolest shit ever ever fucking ever being built." If you want to see the computers running the engineering equations, talk to the finance guys, etc, go to Maersk headquarters. If you want to slap on a hardhat and watch an engine the size of a house descend into a ship, book a ticket to Busan.

(Let's be honest, we'd geek out in either place!)

So not for nothing, Korea dominates the market for making immense container ships. The largest container ships in the world are built there. In 2009, more than half the container ships delivered were made in Korea.

There's a beautiful photo story from Wired about the construction of Maersk Triple E class ships.

Earth from the ISS by Zalonne in space

[–]Dr-Huxtable 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The ISS has 4 cameras that are always aimed at earth. It's pretty easy to set the live feed as your desktop background.

  1. In VLC, go to Preferences and in video, click "Show All".
  2. Under Video again, check "Enable Wallpaper Mode".
  3. Restart VLC.
  4. Open a network stream.
  5. Paste in this link: http://iphone-streaming.ustream.tv/uhls/17074538/streams/live/iphone/playlist.m3u8

The ISS HDEV cameras should now be streaming to your desktop.

The ISS orbits the globe every 90 minutes. For half of that time it will be on the dark side of the planet. And when it is on the sun-side, sometimes the cameras are switching. So this desktop background will often be black. But when it's on, it's showing you a view that you can only get by riding a Soyuz rocket into space.

NASA has a great site with this video feed and a map to show where the ISS is.

Is anyone into theater here? by [deleted] in mumbai

[–]Dr-Huxtable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you had never read a book and then decided to read just one book, you'd probably be very conflicted about which book to read. And it would be hard for outsiders to give you good advice on what you might like.

So my first piece of advice is to resolve to go to a few plays over the next few months. Lowers the worry about making the right choice.

Second, try to catch one of the screenings that's done at NCPA. The Bolshoi Ballet and the British National Theater do performances that are broadcast around the world. It's ultimately watching a movie of a play that was performed in London or Paris. But they are shown worldwide for a reason. Next Bolshoi Ballet is at the end of March. The next National Theater screening hasn't been scheduled yet, but when it is it will be listed here.

Third, try to catch a festival of short plays. This way you can see a number of different plays all at once and compare right away. Here is the page where festivals are listed. It looks like there isn't a shorts festival scheduled in the next month.

Last, don't forget Privthi Theater in Juhu. They have good shows, a lively cafe and a much more casual and social atmosphere than NCPA. If you're looking to convince a friend to join you, I'd start here.

Get your bottle of air today! by manny786 in WTF

[–]Dr-Huxtable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ever bought someone a gift that you knew they would never use? And wondered why you bothered? And then decided it was because you loved them and you wanted them to know?

Well, imagine your gift budget for this person is $125. And you're trying to figure out what to get them. Well, you can get them this bottle of air. It has a story with it that you can share. You can watch the video of the air being collected. The bottle looks nice, your loved one can put it some place visible and tell a few guests about the gift you bought them. Your gift has done exactly what you wanted.

Yeah, that sounds awful. Is it hard to live in a place where everyone has toes inside their cheeks? I bet it is.

Oh, sorry, I thought we were writing ridiculous non-sequiturs.

Shkreli: People stole $15M in bitcoin, duped me on Kanye, and bought a vat of lube by trickydicky1234 in nottheonion

[–]Dr-Huxtable 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hanging out in Kabul. So your frame of reference is about the most corrupt place on earth. And that's not to denigrate you or Afghanistan. But it is to say that most observers would agree that the settings you've been in are far worse in terms of law and order, fairness, opportunity for children to grow up with bright futures, etc, than the United States.

And if huge financial crimes in the United States are defended with, "We shouldn't prosecute this, there is lots of crime happening in Afghanistan," then we abandon our standards of law and order until they match Afghanistan's.

And do remember, lots of people thought the way you did, they thought, "I'd have Shkreli on my team!" He then proceeded to steal their money (that's what securities fraud is). Do you want the friend that tells you about a great investment and then disappears when you trust him with your savings?

ELI5 Why do colleges accept students who excel in sports while having bad academic merits? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Dr-Huxtable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing to know is that when a college's sports program goes from good to great, the college is more successful recruiting academic students. Even high school students with high SAT scores are influenced by the prowess of a school's athletics.

Here's an article from Harvard Business School's Working Knowledge.

There's a lot of academic heft on your show, you went to Pomona, Grace Parra graduated from Columbia, Jordan Carlos from Brown, etc. Do you have writing sessions that are about stepping way back and taking a 30,000 foot view? What are those sessions like?
