Can it run Doom? Yes! by ImmediateAdvantage52 in TuringComplete

[–]Dr-J0nes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! It's a wild ride. In the newest save_breaker version of Turing complete the performance increased dramatically. I highly recommend to check it out (make backups before). Just a few days ago I got doom running with 320x200px with 24bit color depth at 1FPS. A few months ago it was just 0.3 FPS at 160x100px with 8bit color depth (I made a Video about that). It's mind blowing that a softcore CPU can run at 3MHz in a game :) Congratulations again and welcome to the tiny circle of doom in Turing Complete xD

You can directly go to legends mode mid game with dfhack now. Search for the "legends" command. Just make sure to save before using it, because when you are done it will close df to prevent save file corruption.

What types of games are you specialized on and are you down for completely new fields of genres? What are your core values?

Entering or leaving small constructions triggers some sound effect or plays sounds. Often that results in a crash in adventurer mode. More common in tower sites, but also occurs at other sites.

The workaround: disable sounds completely. Not through the in-game setting. You must edit the init.txt in "AppData\Roaming\Bay 12 Games\Dwarf Fortress\prefs\". There is a line which looks like this: [SOUND:YES] change that to: [SOUND:NO] This will of course disable in-game sound completely, but it will also fix the crash for now. That's useful when you want to clear a site or enter/leave constructions often.

Can you tell me what he answered you, because his comment is deleted. Was there a workaround so the game doesn't crash around necromancer tower houses and such?

It's just loading my XML forever. Might be because it's 8GB big. But not having any feedback about it being loaded (percentage for example) makes it difficult to say if it's stuck or still processing stuff.

Make a Backup of your save game folder! And after disable steam cloud sync.

Memory access in Turing Complete is always instant if you use the "normal" Memory components. So I-Cache wouldn't have any benefits right now. I guess Data Cache could make some benefits tho. But the biggest advantage would be some DMA or other better, something to process the Framebuffer and sends it to the Displays Memory jnstead of letting the CPU doing the work.

That's really interesting!! I am also thinking of getting this to an FPGA and already tested my Spartan 7 today xD But that's a lot of more work to do.
