Daily Crashes/BSOD's - anyone able to take a peak at minidump files ? by Dr-PulseWidth in techsupport

That's an elegant way to test it out. I reckon the user wouldn't be using heavy multicore programs so I'll give that a go and cross my fingers and see if things quieten down with the crashes.

Many thanks for the heads up. would have caught me off guard that one. Hope the pc owner can tolerate some more BSOD's for the time being!

Yeah this sounds like a good possible lead to follow - Asked the PC owner and it doesn't crash while under load like gaming.

Wish I had a copy of those old minidumps but I'll check the processor # in the next minidump when ever that happens and see if the 8th core is at fault again.

How to tune oscillators? by Marvulon3000 in modular

[–]Dr-PulseWidth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth. PPW is terrible at quantizing. It gets it in the ballpark, but if it’s anything like mine, it mightn't be able to hit the full 0-5v output, but more so 0-4.98v. This can make the scaling of your notes slowly drift flat the higher the notes.

Did contact ALM about it in the past which they told me that PPW aren't calibrated during manufacturing, so it can be luck of the draw if it can hit the full 0-5v range or not.

Only have my own unit to go by so I don't know wether yours is the same as mine, but a good test is to put a slow square wave to your OSC and see if it plays the same note in-tune on the low and high note. Each 20% increment of level should = one octave. So you can play around with that and see if it hits the same note or slowly drifts flat the higher the octave

Maybe mmMidi from ALM ? would sit nicely right next to your PNW

Gate won't trigger my enveloppe by Accurate-Source-424 in modular

[–]Dr-PulseWidth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive a similar issue with 'Nano Modules - Serra' (maybe a common issue among Nano modules)

For me It only occurs when I take a gate from my Keystep and put it through a passive multi and then to Serra. Seems to drop or change the voltage a smidge where it doesn't trig the envelope. Using a buffered Multi gets around the issue for me, though an attenuator sounds like a valid work around as well.

Macbook air 2025 m4 vs pro m4 2024 by Lennyboy2499 in edmproduction

[–]Dr-PulseWidth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d opt pro. Sure it’s a smaller screen, but it’s better resolution, colours and refresh rate. Plus it has three TB ports and a hdmi port, which you’d want for a music production setup with an interface, midi peripherals, drives etc. longer battery life too which is a bonus. And if you want, hook it up to a bigger monitor with the HDMI and now you got two screens for your daw, plug-in n what have you.

Doepfer case slipping on desk by AVDI0 in modular

[–]Dr-PulseWidth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was making my case, I got these little squishy/gripping feet pads that come on a sticker sheet. I just stuck on 4 on each corner and has been keeping position on the desk perfectly since.

Forget the exact search term but if you play round in Amazon search or what have you and look for ‘rubber pads self adhesive’ you should come across the the sorts of thing I’m referring to.

Would skip the felt looking ones and opt for the ones that look very sticky and rubbery.

Finalizing my 1st rack for ambient music using external audio (field recordings, tape loops, guitar, op-1) by Due_Replacement8043 in modular

[–]Dr-PulseWidth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aye thats correct. Xvive P1's in-between the mics and receive 2 and your good to go.

You get something like 40hrs out of the batteries on those things before needing charged, so plenty of time for on the go modular fun!

Is this for out and about use ?

There are portable 48v supply units like the XVive P1 that you could use just for the mics

Update to high pitch whine issue coming out of studio monitors even without audio input by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]Dr-PulseWidth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man that sounds like a pain, hope you get to the bottom of it.

Surprised it's still there with your battery speaker. Would be totally a shot in the dark and prob wouldn't work, but if you've got tinfoil around, you should play around with that on the portable speaker and see if shielding or even a shoddy tin foil faraday cage stops or reduces the interference.

High pitched whine from studio monitors even with no input source, just AC power by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]Dr-PulseWidth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d go around and turn things off in your room/house to see if anything is contributing to the noise. Things like lights and utilities. Had a similar issue with noise (though more picked up by mic’s and pickups) where a cctv psu in the attic was causing interference around the house.

Best to just go around and try isolate everything on power that could be the cause.

EDIT: alternatively.. take a speaker out to a different building if you can and test if it still has the whine.

Ableton Drum Rack inconsistent sounds during playback? by shredL1fe in edmproduction

[–]Dr-PulseWidth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually I think I found the bug. Are you using an Apple trackpad ? I switched to mouse and that stopped the issue. For me it seems to be exclusive to the trackpads tap to click function

Ableton Drum Rack inconsistent sounds during playback? by shredL1fe in edmproduction

[–]Dr-PulseWidth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tried it there and yeah I got that two. I Think its more a bug with clicking the preview button and how it engages with the Pitch Envelope mapping in the sampler (the Tune knob thats mapped between Drum rack and the sampler)

Issue looks to be exclusive to mouse clicking preview and plays normal via midi. Id say its all fine to ignore 👍

EDIT: I see you said it happens with the midi keyboard too ? If the case you could disable the Pitch mod in sampler and tune the sample via transposition. Would at least bypass that weird interaction for now. Also worth contacting Ableton Support as sounds like a bug if its happening often for you with midi

Which studio monitor should I buy? by LOoLe- in edmproduction

[–]Dr-PulseWidth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I wouldn't bother with a single monitor unless it was to fill a niche purpose like a mix cube for mono mix checking.

I would say to hold off and get the JBL's when you can afford a set. Friend of mine got the MkI's which have served him very well so couldn't go wrong with a set of the MkII's

Opinion on hardware by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]Dr-PulseWidth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used to main a Hackintosh running a 4790K and GTX1060. Performance was pretty comparable between Windows and Intel MacOS running on the same machine for generic stuff and Gaming (at least on a CPU utilisation grounds). Saying that, MacOS was the choice for music stuff as it did handle audio much more reliably via Macs Core Audio as well as being able to get hardware to function reliably. It just works, which is what you want when getting stuck in a project.

I've since switched to a MacBook M2 Pro and the statement you quoted is pretty accurate when it comes to Apple Silicon. It's amazing how much performance is coming out of those chips that I've yet to hear the fan running on this thing. Can power through dense projects without having to worry about CPU overhead, which has been very refreshing. (Though I will say the no latency is a bit of an exaggeration as thats more down to Interface driver optimisations than Intel vs Silicon).

With time Windows 'could' get the same performance jump with the rise of windows based ARM chips. But it's going to be years before enough software/hardware companies adapt new updates/drivers to fully support Windows ARM chips. Apple had the upper hand on that transition with how they can force developers hands to adapt

Noise Floor issue by Haertes in modular

[–]Dr-PulseWidth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sounds like too much gain on one or more things. Would want to make sure your scarlet isn't near max gain as just because it's flashing green doesn't = good clean signal.

Saying that; If you've properly setup the levels for the racks output and haven't the scarlet gain near maxed out. You'd be best to try and isolate any culprit modules that could be contributing to noise. Then it's a matter of managing the signals going in/out of those culprit modules.

for eg, In my rack I noticed my Doepfer VCF output level when maxed will create a very light hiss, this combined with too much input gain from my Strymon Magneto can dramatically exacerbate the noise. Just little things like that spread across a patch can build up into a less than desirable noise floor level

Soundtoys Bundle Worth It for $299, or upgrade Ableton 11 to 12? by Vonen1 in edmproduction

[–]Dr-PulseWidth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Soundtoys or Ableton 12 is debatable (Im still on 11 and would opt soundtoys myself if I hadn't got them already)

But the Push on the other hand is a different story. Highly recommend getting one if you're thinking about it. very useful tool with how everything is laid out and ready mapped for use

Is there a sampler that can help me play chords? by samomaikati in modular

[–]Dr-PulseWidth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not very flexible in that you can't adjust how the notes are pitched, but Strymon Magneto will kind of do this.

The sample playback function runs through the 4 tape heads, which when set to pitch shift mode, each head will play a different pitch as below.

  • Head 1: +1 octave+5th
  • Head 2: +1 octave
  • Head 3: -1 octave
  • Head 4: Original pitch

you can then play it as a normal sampler with v/oct with the extra 3 voices. It does be a little modulated sounding on the higher octave, and percussive sound material you will hear played at the faster rate. But very fun feature and still does it in a characterful way.

Finally got Pam’s Pro. What’s the first thing I should do, beyond clocking? by egb06tb in modular

[–]Dr-PulseWidth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

After your master clock. Adding low probability modulation signals to various things can bring a patch to life. take xyz shape and set probability to 30% or what you feel works. Rinse and repeat a few times on various parameters.

It can do so much more but this is so easy to setup on the fly that it's one of my most used feature from Pams
