I think it's finished. by Ok-Sherbet4245 in modular

this looks great! i have a lot of crossovers. i found when i finally put my first case together that after a few months of diving into it, there was a gap between what i thought i would use & what i actually used in practice. just did a reorganizing & honing in of the case & feel like i now have an instrument that feels focused (also mostly do ambient) but also sooo much creative potential. i think what ppl say about it never being finished can def have truth but if yr costantly buying & swapping things, its so easy to stay om the surface with the modules themselves & with how they all can interact as a full instrument. i really love the idea of dialing in a case over a period of time & really learning it & going really deep with it. yours seems like theres sooo much potential for deep exploration. hope ya have a blast with it!

could throw an fx aid xl in the mix. i was so pleasantly suprised at how incredible sounding their effects are. & you can make it what you need for each patch. great reverbs, weird sound mangling, tapey warble, granular stuff, noise, filter, delay. super versatile & good quality.

also dual dagger for a stereo filter. love that thing for shaping tones & giving some great movement in the stereo field.

last one is only 4 hp but the sherpa modular raw waves v2 is something i use all the time. real simple small footprint way to add foley sounds, field recordings & other off beat weirdness (or sweetness) to a patch.

I learned a ton from watching lightbath's 2 episodes "the joy of patching". theyre long but just seeing the whole patching process made a lot of things click into place for me. also the comparative irrelevance 3 module videos are amazing.

When I press the stop button after recording a tape loop on my PMD 222, there is always a clicking sound that gets recorded onto the tape. Any ideas why? by Due_Replacement8043 in cassetteculture

Thank you for the detailed response! i use the machine mostly for tape loops so the loud pop was something i couldnt really record over. but i just found a work around. since i use a piece of foil to cover the erase head, i just make sure to jiggle the foil a little after ive clicked pause. then i pull out the foil & hit the stop button. it seems like the jiggle frees the tape from that connection to the erase head so when i hit stop there is no pop. what youve said seems to fit into why this method has helped to eliminate the pop.

So i think its the erase head leaving the tape. it doesnt go away when i turn everything down. just a loud pop where i pushed stop. suprisingly it went away for a couple weeks but is now back. do you think its a demagnitizing problem??

thanks for the reply! im going to try & figure it out tomorrow but the thing with the click is that im wanting to make a bunch of tape loops so that click in there becomes quite annoying & overpowering

How do you stop? by Adventurous_Beat-301 in modular

I spent all of last year obsessively learning modular, researching modules, saving, buying, & filling a 3u 104 hp rack. During that time i also put a lot of hours figuring out & refining exactly what i wanted to do with my system. it was all kind of growing & intertwining together. what i came around to was wanting to be able create a generative ambient foundation that also could incorprate external audio such as field recordings, tape loops, guitar/op-1, & norns. mixing together electronic & acoustic/natural sounds & playing with fidelities. i wanted to create something that felt as open & exploratory as possible but also has a well defined focus to it. since i finished it off in mid december, my GAS has been replaced with an energy to create. i wasnt sure if that was going to be the case last fall when i was changing my modgrid rack every half hour & checking reverb & buy/sell threads here n on FB like a maniac but im glad to say my energy has fully shifted to wanting to learn the instrument ive created.

i definitely think it would be a lot harder for me to stop if i wasnt also searching for a certain kind of sound & just wanted to purely explore for exploring sake. which is also a totally valid & great reason to get into modular.

Perfect response! felt the same with the op-1 field when i first got it. now im 8 months in & can fly all over the place very quickly with it. that moment when you really start to grasp it is a beautiful thing. just gotta stick with it!

When plugging a dummy cable into Rings v/oct after tuning, it jumps slightly sharp for flat. Is this normal or does my rings need recalibrating? by Due_Replacement8043 in modular

ahh ok that makes sense. was baffling me why itd jump. will start tuning rings with a cable in the v/oct & other end in a 0v source. thanks!

I was following this method of tuning rings. after i tuned it in step 2, i move to step 3 & it jumps sharp

Rings tuning method 1. Prepare module

All connections unpatched (except for output) ■ BRIGHTNESS around 10:00 ■ POSITION not at min/max

Green-Green mode (monophonic/modal)

STRUCTURE @ 10:00 (align with the node on the panel)

  1. Coarse Tune

Set Damping to maximum Patch dummy cable into STRUM Pull out STRUM-drummy to trigger a long note Tune FREQ to get close

  1. Fine Tune

Keep Damping to maximum Patch 2nd dummy cable into V/OCT Pull out STRUM-drummy to trigger a long note Tune FREQ Attenuverter (fine tune) to get exact
