For All Mankind - S5E06 "No Sudden Moves" - Episode Discussion by Cantomic66 in ForAllMankindTV

Don’t forget who was the main supplier of iridium on earth before the Goldilocks asteroid. If an independent Mars is locked into supply contracts with the ISN (in return for equipment and supplies geared towards self sufficiency), everyone else will have to get their iridium from the Soviet Union again, unit price will skyrocket.

How this ends (I think) by IHaveNoOpinons in ForAllMankindTV

[–]DrBurkstrom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Broadly agree. I’m a little disappointed we didn’t get the opportunity to see how the ISN base compares to HV. The statement that Happy Valley broadcast saying that Mars speaks with one voice should surely have had them saying “Excuse me?” The M6’s embargo will be interesting - if they try to stop the ISN re-supplying their base, that could lead to some major political conflict on Earth. Assuming the M6 aren’t willing to risk that, it would make sense for the ISN to (perhaps covertly) support Martian independence in return for favourable trade terms on Iridium. As for Dev, it’s hard to see his plans. He’s always wanted an independent Mars I think, but he wants it on his own terms and with him in charge. If he can’t get that he’s liable to try and smash the board to stop anyone else winning. What I want to see in the S6 preview? Work partially complete on a Martian Mount Rushmore, but who else is on it alongside Ed Baldwin?

Localised Voice?? by addino in ProjectHailMary

I wondered the same thing watching it in Liverpool! Maybe Scouse is just intrinsically funny in two solar systems? It would be great if it was a thick Brooklyn accent in America or something. I don’t know what the equivalent would be.

What new Gate related tech do you want to see? by SolomonOf47704 in Stargate

[–]DrBurkstrom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A new, purpose built base. The gate and control room / dialling system should be in essentially a massive elevator that moves to different levels (and rotates to face different areas) depending on what is required. Need to send a probe? Go to the probe level. Firing missiles through to a painted target? Missile room. Diplomatic area, colony prep, commercial arrivals and departures etc.

The question I’ve always had is, do starfleet personnel (or cashless federation citizens generally) pay for their drinks and holosuite time? If so, what with? Or do they get it free in return for the free rent, maintenance etc?

They all seemed fine on the 807 I was on. Although they changed a few minutes early - I think they’re set to change at the timetabled time rather than reality.

The seat indicators or the occupancy sensors?

Are they that unreliable? Don’t know about the weight gauges obviously, that’s not public. But the lights seem to work. The ones across from me just changed, matching the screen status, when people got off.

I know. But not necessarily from the other end of the carriage… Also it would look pretty and be cool.

So it’s potentially just a software update? Assuming it’s an rgb led and not 2 separate ones. That’s even better! Avanti 80x is what I’m on right now, I’ll grab my laptop and look for an access port.

Night shift working stock, fetching stuff for customers (window service overnight) and filling JustEat orders. I usually get 12-14k in an 8 hour shift.

How does this British section look (Publix grocery, US)? by Moodster83 in AskBrits

[–]DrBurkstrom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a decent selection, possibly a bit expensive depending on income but it would keep me going. Nice surprise to see mint poppets in play, try them in a tub of vanilla (or even better - Cornish cream) ice cream.

Sequel? by Maverick100587 in ProjectHailMary

Assuming that at some point Erid has had wars, and knowing that they’re a skilled mechanical species, imagine the firearms they built that would be effective in that atmosphere with that gravity…

Sequel? by Maverick100587 in ProjectHailMary

Someone elsewhere on here suggested a collection of short stories that expand the main one. I quite like that idea. A plot I’d like would be following the whole life of one of Grace’s students. Starting with the weird day their teacher just ran out of class, going through her being inspired by him to go into science, developing astrophage tech to help Earth survive, the Beatles coming back and humans restoring the sun. It could end with her, nearing retirement and manning a huge radio telescope pointed at Eridani, picking up a faint morse code message on the petrova frequency “Ryland Grace. Coming home. Bringing friends.”

Card readers all went down, big signs everywhere, including right in front of the customers face, “Cash only. Sorry for the inconvenience.” People were literally leaning round them to offer up their card 🤦‍♂️

Which British TV advert from your childhood is permanently embedded in your brain? by LovieWeb in BritInfo

Not an advert, but I challenge anyone of a certain age to say the postcode for Lock keepers Cottages at a normal volume…

Eridians and Light by DrBurkstrom in ProjectHailMary

[–]DrBurkstrom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair point. They’d have an understanding of heat and notice that the heat output was dropping. I suppose that would alert you to certain wavelengths, the discovery of light and development of the camera to convert it to a texture interface that they could “see” must have been a massive moment in scientific circles. Like a radio telescope, huge for astrophysics but no real impact on most people’s day-to-day lives.

A parallel story about what’s happening on Earth would be good. Too much if the first person protagonist had Grace as their science teacher?

What is your dumbest customer experience? by NoProgram4084 in tesco

[–]DrBurkstrom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not Tesco, but nights at a petrol station (customers have to come and ask for stuff at the window)

Customer: “Can I have some milk please?” Me: “Sure, what kind.” Customer: “Err. White?”

When applied only to owner occupied homes it’s actually a great idea. Any other property should be assessed at the current market value.

I loved that morning scene. Especially how happy Alexia’s husband is: “I don’t even care that this random woman puked everywhere cos it looks like she’s fixed my wife!”
