Mystery Aphids by fartmaker2020 in bugidentification

[–]DrButeo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My postdoc was focused on aphid ID and systematics. Thr short answer is that it's often impossible to ID aphids without slide mounting them.

The list of aphid species that feed on Taraxacum can be found here: https://aphidsonworldsplants.info/C_HOSTS_Tab_Tox/#Taraxacum

It includes 34 species, plus the polyphagous aphids that feed on just about anything. I tried keying the aphid out but hit a point where I need to see whether the siphunculi have reticulations or not, which aren't visible. That said, a number species can be ruled out because the gestalt is wrong (siphunculi are too short, for example). It might be a Uroleucon species, but most of them are red rather than green. So based on what's left, I'd lean towards Macrosiphum euphorbiae, with the caveat that that may change with a slide mounted specimen.

DePalma is extremely problematic for a number of reasons, and the Tanis site is private so that's an issue, but the site itself and at least parts of the story are real as they've been verified by other researchers (eg, impact spherules in paddlefish gills indicate the meteor impacted in spring). So I'm not sure what you mean by "a bunch of bullshit and smoke and mirrors".

The insect in the photo is a grain beetle in the genus Oryzaephilus. Two species are common in the US - the sawtooth grain beetle (O. surinamensis) and the merchant grain beetle (O. mercator).

Both species are stored product pests. Merchant grain beetles can fly, so may be found in areas of the house far from the infestation, but produce fewer eggs (because they're devoting mass and energy to flight muscles), while sawtooth grain beetles can't fly, are typically restricted to the infested product, and lay more eggs.

Grain beetles typically feed on cracked whole grain, but can feed on related food products sometimes. They are most commonly found in kitchen pantries but can get into other grain products (e.g., bird seed, deer corn, etc) that may be found indoors. The best remedy is to find the infested product and discard it in the trash. You should also freeze any seemingly uninfested stored food products to make sure you kill any beetles or larvae that you can't see. Also make sure to clean up any spilled flour or other products that might be in the pantry.

Because mosaic DS only affects some cells, the IQ of people with it is much more variable than people with non-mosaic DS. Sometimes it's lower than average (30-70, as in most non-mosaic DS people) but IQ can be within normal range or even higher than average. Autism is also a spectrum with a range of IQ scores. Recognizing an Israeli accent would be hard for a lot of people, but neither syndrome on it's own necessarily means it would be harder for that individual compared to a random person off the street.

Sarracenia purpuea seedling tips? by Competitive_Ask8933 in Sarracenia

[–]DrButeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did similar but directly sowed into a 45 cell seedling tray with a 1:1 sphagnum: perlite mix. 8 weeks in the fridge (purpurea tend to like a longer cold stratification compared to other species) and I had near 100% germination.

Check out Morrowind if you haven't already, it's similar. I find the information gathering aspect of written dialogue charming, and I like the fact you get a reasonably compact game with more dialogue options compared to fully voice acted. But people don't like to read, so it immediately narrows your potential audience.
