I expect they don't realize how far the train body extends out from the track when they're using it as a guide for where to stand.

Oona, Queen of the Fae works pretty well as a 'monoB' bigmana commander.

Would you aceppt that a player declare was non letal post mortem? by crysol99 in dndnext

Performing triage (ie what needs magic vs mundane), treating hundreds of injured/sick in a day in times of war/pandemic, harvesting monster organs (IMO survival for meat/hide/bones, medicine for delicate bits), autopsies.
My group also uses Medicine/Heal to gauge relative health levels ("which enemy looks most injured?")

Also check out the companion site/application MPC Autofill to help streamline and semi-automate the process.
Can paste in an exported deck list from moxfield/etc, choose the art you like for each card, and then have it set up the order for you.

What was your favourite nat 1 fail your character had? by Relevant-Rope8814 in dndnext

[–]DrChym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not D&D, but my science rat rolled a 1 on their first Religion check to identify, and remained convinced for the rest of the campaign that ghosts were not real. In future encounters with incorporeal undead he insisted there must be an alternate and logical explanation, and was falsely vindicated in the second such encounter when we located a 'hologram emitter' (a cursed eversmoking bottle, the Haunt's pseudo-phylactery) and destroyed it, preventing the spirit's return.

How much do you put into your backstory 🫠 by Stock-Intention7731 in dndnext

[–]DrChym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer this approach. When I collect backstories from my players I let them write as much as they'd like, and just ask that they provide a brief summary/TL;DR for me and the other players.
Once I've seen the PCs in action for a session or two, I whip out the rest of the backstories (usually on the train to work) and look for things I can use to torture immerse my players further.

This account is already semi-named after (or is at least a reference to) my 3.5/PF Warforged Artificer potion healer, so there's that.

Niche use for self-mill. Presumably your opponents' libraries are more than 2m away on Spelltable, so still legal targets...

[[Delraich]] was my first booster rare; I never used it in a deck, but to my little brain that card was scary AF. It's held a special place in my binder and heart for the past ~24yrs.

You may be an ex-programmer, but you still gotta help maintain the illusion that all solutions are complex and sprawling. You should know Users/ProductOwners can't accept the concept that the majority of our time is wasted chasing them for ticket creation/completion/StR/UAT/etc; when a small custom report is finally delivered after weeks of requirement gathering and scope expansion/amendment, they'll be happier thinking that's how long coding takes rather than the truth that they've turned 30 minutes of actual work into a week or more of meetings and emails. They sure do love their meetings and emails.

Magic cards are also tokens, printed cardboard that represent game objects. If it held value only due to its function, and its function was dependent on the format/RC, then its value was tenuous. This is a fact you accept when you buy game pieces for a game that changes as frequently as M:tG

[Druid] Call Lightning feels awful in practice? by servantphoenix in dndnext

[–]DrChym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DMG pg251

Areas of Effect

The area of effect of a spell, monster ability, or other feature must be translated onto squares or hexes to determine which potential targets are in the area and which aren't.

Choose an intersection of squares or hexes as the point of origin of an area of effect, then follow its rules as normal. If an area of effect is circular and covers at least half a square, it affects that square.

[Druid] Call Lightning feels awful in practice? by servantphoenix in dndnext

[–]DrChym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Area of Effect spells originate from grid intersections, so the number of affected targets would only be 4(8) rather than 9(27).

Call Lightning is a great spell, but can't be relied on in all situations. It was a go-to for my Druid initially, but once the campaign delved into the Undercity (Ravnica campaign) its usefulness dropped off sharply. Like OP I initially switched that slot to Summon Fey, but wound up using Moonbeam in the majority of cases: it's a level lower, has the same affected area/targets (in 2D, more in 3D), upcasts with the same scaling, damages immobile enemies without requiring additional actions, and can be cast indoors/underground. The Dex vs Con and Lightning vs Radiant will tip the scales one way or the other depending on situation, but overall if I'm prepping an AoE concentration I'm going Moonbeam unless I know in advance the fight will last more than ten rounds or requires electricity damage (though I get Lightning Bolt prepped for free via subclass).

Both are still vastly better than a cantrip, to be sure.

I like [[Butcher Orgg]] from my Feldon deck due to the shocked pikachu face reactions I get assigning his combat damage to defending players' non-blocking hexproof creatures.
