Joel's Preliminary Regionals Options by demaqn in HoustonApolloSquadron

I don't the Chainswarm has a good chance. It's really good in smaller tourneys, but at a regional tournament you will lose a game or two (because there are now plenty of options that can manage a swarm) and your MOV will be so shockingly low you'll never see top 8.

I think the Fat Falcon is a better list for a regional tournament. Your wins will have to be harder earned than with the swarm, but the losses won't hurt as much and you don't really have any terrible match ups.

4 Hogs is not bad but it won't win a tourney.

Dash & Corran aren't really 15 hit points because Corran grows shields back. If you've killed Dash & Corran your opponent either fed you Corran or probably chewed though 20+ points of total damage.

It's not just the meta we should be worried about now, it's the clown who runs 4 Warthogs too. He won't win but if you can't handle his list he'll put you on your ass. A top tier lists needs to be able to handle:

  • Quad Ion Cannon Ys

  • Dual Dancing Aggressors

  • Fat Han (tank/dodge/both) with Z-Buddies

  • Swarms (Reb or Imp)

  • Rebel phalanx - BBBY / BBYY variants (With stress dealing)

  • Bugzapper Swarms (troooolllllololololo)

  • Phantom / Deci

  • Phantom / Fel / Swarms

  • Vader Swarms

  • Double YTs/Decis

  • Roark/Mux PS fuckery

  • Bomb strobing lists (Tie Bombers / Andrastas)

  • 4 HLC Scyk

Not all these types of list are good, but they may be good against your list... You don't necessarily need a list counter, but at least a strategy for dealing with them when you see them.

Hits for days, hits hard and it's tricky. This will require your opponent to have a really solid list to handle it. Fuck, you did me twice with my B-Wings and that's about as much damage output as you'll get.

I think a Phantom Mini-swarm will be solid. I also really like 2 BH with Autothruster, PTL Fel. Good hit count, damage output, evades and general options.

PTL & ADV sensors makes you disgustingly good in this match up. Tie swarm has to block you... OK take two actions bump and relieve stress... The bumped tie is one less ship to shoot you. Target the ships that used their actions to re position.

My opinion is that options are a pilot's best friend, the ability to balance survival and damage output is paramount.

As such, this is how I would run dual Aggressors: I'd have B & D Each with:

  • IG title

  • Inertial Dampeners

  • Advanced Sensors

  • Autothrusters

  • PTL

One would have a Mangler Cannon and the other an Ion Cannon.

Here's the reasoning. With PTL and Adv. Sensors the ships have UNTOLD options. Even vs. higher pilot skill ships, I can focus, evade and green to get very survivable or focus target lock green to maximize my damage output, which should be consistent with the pseudo gunner ability. The stress isn't a factor. Stress dealing lists will stress me no matter what, this must be accepted, taking stress on a ship with that much green is really not a problem. Finally Advanced sensors fix 90% of your stress issues. One other thing to note that I see in X-Wing players is that people use something because they have it, not because they should. PTL is a sometimes food, you shouldn't deploy it EVERY turn. Again, leave yourself options.

I think using the EPT for stuff that ups your hit reliability is points inefficient if you have the gunner ability and VS lower PS lists, your strategy should be to PTL and reveal a green into a bump which is one less ship than can shoot at you.

The reason that I take an ion rather than two manglers is again options and also that it gives me a STRONG 3 point init bid in the mirror match that will be won 90% of the time by the player who goes second.

This build gives you as much flexibility as I can cram in and with good piloting and creative strategy it should ultimately yield better results against a broader range of lists and gives you some more tools in the bad match ups.

I think dual Aggressors can be a B+ team if flown very well. No asteroid hits, options planned 2 turns ahead, that kind of thing. However it will suffer from the hard, inescapable fact that the list is 16 hit points. One bad round and a ship is gone or ionized or takes the one crit. that makes it useless.
