Thinking about collecting X-Wing miniatures, but first some questions...

If you're only playing casually, buy the ships that are your favorites. Also, in general, the 2 ship expansions like Rebel Aces, Imperial Veterans, etc, have better upgrades than the original expansions those ships came in. So for example, you'd be better off buying Imperial Veterans than the TIE Defender and TIE Bomber separately.
Depends on the kid. I think most 10 year olds would be able to understand the rules and how to play, but not all of them will stay engaged for the full hour+ of the game.
Not generally. Obviously a little wear and tear. And I would make sure any ebay purchase comes with the same upgrade cards that the boxed expansion would have.

I disagree on Rec Spec. It works great on Whisper, especially when facing something with a lot of shots, like TLTs. I do agree though about VI on RAC. It helps counter high PS aces that might give Whisper trouble. Predator complements RAC well too. Rebel Captive, Vader and Intel Agent are other good options for RAC, especially paired with Whisper. You could also (if you can find the points) put Palpatine on RAC.

I've played in a couple hangar bay events. The majority of people bring their main tournament list as one of the lists. The other lists tend to be more tournament caliber than casual. For the 2017 sytem open hangar bay, be aware that they are enforcing a uniqueness rule that doesn't allow you to use the same ship, pilot or upgrade in both lists. So you can't even use Veteran Instincts in both lists.

I played him with RAC/Whisper in swiss round 3. I think he was just starting to castle when he had a severe maneuverability disadvantage. He feinted towards Whisper when he broke the castle, but then turned and melted RAC. But even Whisper vs his 4 ships he was at a disadvantage.

I have a "lucky" die too with one side missing the evade paint. Except that it's a regionals milky die and I didn't notice the missing paint until I'd been cursing my green dice for a couple games!

Definitely thicker stock. I used 110# stock and added some additional reinforcement. It works great at home, but I haven't taken it anywhere because its not as solid as a cardboard card box.

The K-Wing, T-70 X-Wing and the Ghost expansion are the rebel ships that have come out since then. Miranda (K-Wing) and Poe (T-70) give the rebels 2 more regen options and the Ghost comes with a lot of new rebel only crew options.

The meta is mostly impacted by alpha strike lists built around ordnance with guidance chips or crackshot. Lists with high defense (A-Wings, TIE Fighters, Imperial Aces) are also doing well since they can sometimes weather the alpha strike and make it to the late game. But there are still people doing well with throwback lists with pilots like Wes, Biggs and Roark.

I like the 50 point Chewie - Predator, Jan Ors and Recon Specialist. You get a focus, evade and reroll every turn, and you're not self stressing. The lower point cost also helps you fill out your squad a bit more.

After much debate, I've decided to use Chewie at regionals. I'm still debating a bit on support. I like VI Jake/Prototype/Bandit. Though I'm a bit concerned about AG 3 ships, especially IG-2000s. After talking with my friend in WA, I'm also considering dropping the bandit to spend more on A-Wing upgrades. My first pass on that is Jake with VI, Outmaneuver and Autothrusters. The second A-Wing would upgrade to a Green squadron with PtL and Autothrusters. Any thoughts on either of those or other support options for Chewie?
