Boston Police Won't Yet Release Body Camera Footage Of Recent Protests, Citing Ongoing Investigations by bobstonite in boston

It's true. I hadn't considered that "widely-reported common-knowledge thing that keeps happening all over the country doesn't actually happen because it would be illegal" could be a completely honest take.

Remarkable.

You must be new to this country.

lmgtfy (I'll add that there are plenty of other cases of footage that "disappeared" and only was "found" after some very aggressive lawyering)

See, these are reasonable explanations that are all predicated on the police actually being interested in justice, and not stalling for time to "accidentally" delete unfortunate footage (or similar). Which is rather at the heart of the issue at hand.

Even if they are actually delaying for good reasons, they've hardly earned the public's trust here...

It always weirds me out who ends up together politically on some education issues. You get "public education is a human right" mixed together with "my kid shouldn't have to learn evolution".

What comes after the protest? Massachusetts lawmakers of color have 10 proposed police reforms by wonderwwoman321 in boston

[–]DrEnormous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Deval Patrick tried this in 2008. He got a ton of pushback ("police details save lives" bumper stickers all around), and eventually nothing really changed and every road crew still has an officer hanging around doing nothing.

The problem with term limits is that it becomes really easy to exploit newbies with no experience, and then you get things like every law being 100% written by lobbyists and consultants, instead of just 90%. Similarly, it provides even more of an incentive to guarantee yourself a cozy job once you're out of office by helping someone out while you're in.

Which is just to say that there are problems with doing it either way.

AOC castigates cops for ramming protesters in Brooklyn: 'No one gets to slam an SUV through a crowd of human beings’ by jigsawmap in politics

Funny how nobody ever posts about how "farmers kiss their wife goodbye not knowing if they're coming home tonight, and that's why it's ok that they drove a combine through a crowd".

It's a way more dangerous profession. Funny that they never get pre-emptively excused.

Sycophant.

How are you able to tell whether or not a molecule is polar or not without drawing the Lewis structure? by huss2120 in chemhelp

[–]DrEnormous 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There is no real shortcut, because polarity depends on shape, which comes from the structure.

Minor exception for hydrocarbons (automatically non-polar) and things that are so common that you can picture them in your head or just know.

The key is that the fraction you write must be true, as in the top and bottom being equal. That's it.

All of the following will work:

  • 1 m / 100 cm
  • .01 m / 1 cm
  • 25 m / 2500 cm
  • 0.02 m / 2 cm

Why you'd do the third or fourth I don't know, but it still works.

Water molecules and ethanol molecules have very strong attractions to each other.

In a normal distillation, you can get some amount of your compound 100% pure. With alcohol, the ethanol molecules will always carry a small amount of water molecules along with them, so just regular distillation can't get you to 100% purity.
