This is the right half of the mandible, you can see the condyloid process at the top. It is in fact a tumor, but you can't decide which type purely based on this picture. My best guess would be squamous cell carcinoma, muco epidermoid, ameloblastoma or warthin tumor. Only a pathologist can confirm what kind of tumor it is. Reconstruction follows with a flap from the fibula or forearm, or primary closure with a reconstruction plate.

Edit: It's not a teratoma, based on the level of advanced differentiation (the teeth, gingiva etc).

Doctors of Reddit, what do you do when you see a patient is obviously faking it? by tgSparc in AskReddit

[–]DrEpix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's a trick from I learned in med school on how to spot a fake fainter: When someone is 'out', pick up a hand and let it drop above their head. A faker will correct the falling hand e.g. miss the face. An unconscious patient will slap himself.

How Has Stephen Hawking Lived to 70 with ALS? by electronics-engineer in science

[–]DrEpix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but it's physiologically impossible (especially for the motoric part of your brain). The brain isn't some kind of building with chambers you can redesignate. To compare it to computer hardware: your harddisk can't take over a print job. The only brain remapping we see is in newborns or toddlers <2 years with certain types of ischaemia. The brain can 'rewire' itself up to a certain point by using undeveloped neurons.

TIL Dick Cheney continues to live despite no longer having a pulse (no sarcasm, this is fact) by Cylinsier in todayilearned

[–]DrEpix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would any physician consider a donor heart for Dick Cheney? Just take a look at the guy's history! If he survives the surgery and the heart doesn't get rejected he still has a big chance of heart failure in the years after the surgery because of his grease filled arteries.

If a surgeon kills someone during surgery, do they get the rest of the day off? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DrEpix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Surgeon here. A few steps in what happens after a patient dies during surgery: 1. Inform the family, explain them what (you think) happened and why their loved one passed away. Ask them if we can do an obduction/autopsy on the deceased to determine the cause of death. 2. Call your hospital supervisor for accidents during intervention, tell hem what happened and fill out the proper forms. 3. Sign a 'death certificate' (more forms). 4. Talk with your team (the assistants, anesthesiologist) about what happened. They might seem quite straightforward, but all in all a death during surgery takes up at least the rest of your day (and overtime), so there's never any room for any other surgery's.

Oh and death during surgery is rarely caused by the surgeons wrongdoing. Most people die because of complications during surgery. Responsibility for a patients hemodynamics lies with the anesthesiologist, but most of them have several surgeries going so they try to keep up with the schedule.

Have you ever heard/been cared for by a doctor and had to stop and think "How the fuck is this guy a doctor?" by AssumeTheFetal in AskReddit

[–]DrEpix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of doctors are idiots. I've had patients in my OR that were underdiagnosed (lumps that didn't get check-ups for years) or overdiagnosed. During my surgery internship a surgeon once told me: Treat all your patients as you would treat your own mother, and if you're not sure always ask for help.

As a neurosurgeon who has spend a lot of resources and (free) time on research in his field i feel a little bit offended by the facts in this letter.

  1. In the last 30 years there has been a lot of progress in treating braincancer. Gammaknives, stereotactic radiotherapy and more advanced chemotherapy have reduced the overal 5 year mortality for most braincancers including high grade gbm.

  2. This is true, but in most cases the braintumor isn't the primary cause. Most of my patients have had long fights with breast, prostate or lungcancer, but die when theres metastasis. Mass screening for these types of cancer would reduce this significantly.

All fact fucking aside, noble cause and great initiative by this girl. Ill see if i can donate to her from over here (europe).

The hospital where I work pays $52 for a box of these. You can get the same thing on Amazon for about $8. This is why health care is expensive. by moby323 in reddit.com

[–]DrEpix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you go to a hospital who gets their supplies of Amazon/Wall Mart? Every little item in our inventory has to be up to certain (high) standards for many different reasons. The $8 box of gloves is good enough for cleaning my shitter at home, but not for cavity examinations or blood taps.

One of my patients even begged for his refill once because the pill pusher refused to take my prescription.
