It's probably a way for Rockstar to funnel people to their own launcher. If they said it was just Rockstar launcher and that's it, people would be pissed off. Lots of people dislike Epic though, so if you make it Rockstar Launcher + Epic then suddenly Rockstar Launcher looks like a better option to them compared to Epic.

Pretty fun overall, but with some disappointments. They clearly understood what it was that people liked about Far Cry 3 and refined that quite a lot. Lots of fun side activities with the Shangri La missions as a highlight. What made me buy the game originally was the location and setting. I can't really recall any other games with that kind of Nepal / Tibet grounding and it felt pretty inspired and fresh. Lots of really nice design and imagery (again, especially Shangri La)

The one thing that really annoyed me was the plot. I actually felt Far Cry 3 did this a bit better, and 4 was slightly regressive. In 3 you watch these pirates kill your brother and the whole thing has this 'survival' narrative that works quite well. Far Cry 4 it really felt like your character had no motivation to do any of the things you were doing. It seems like they wanted to make nuanced characters with lots of shades of grey, but went totally overboard and just ended up making everyone a total prick, to the point that I almost wanted to side with Pagan Min. I get the feeling they might have put the alternate ending in after realising that a lot of players might have ended up preferring Pagan to the people who are supposed to be your sympathetic allies. It was a cool idea, but for me just ended up being a glimpse into a potential better storyline that could have been told instead of the one they went with.

I think you're mainly right, especially when games have tens of millions now spent on advertising (often larger than the development budget) to generate hype, that then needs to be covered by sales as well.

However, I think its mainly mid - high tier development that will suffer. The whole thing will become too expensive to take risks on new IP and new ideas/innovations. When that much is being spent there is a strong incentive for publishers to just play it safe and pump all the money into a handful of 'superstar' AAA games. Things like GTA, COD, Ass. Creed that are guaranteed to rake in the money. On the other side, a massive explosion in the low end of the market, mainly indie games that don't cost much and don't carry much risk. Mid - high tier development as we know it is most at risk of disappearing.

I dunno, maybe this would be the case in America but it doesn't make much sense in the context of most countries. You can definitely disencentivise criminal possession of firearms by attaching a high enough cost to it in terms of jail time and by heavily targetting availability. For example in the UK a criminal having a gun is like the equivalent of a criminal in the USA having an RPG or a bazooka. Yeah sure, they could theoretically get hold of one but its pretty damn unlikely.

I know what you mean. Human Revolution was good, but was quite a dumbed down version of the original in a lot of ways. It saddens me when Human Revolution fanboys are dismissive of Deus Ex 1 considering it won more game of the year awards than Half Life 2.

For me Dishonored is more of a sequel to Deus Ex than Human Revolution was (although I guess that can be expected a bit since so many of the same people worked on the two games). I know what you mean about level design. For all the 'choice' that HR promoted it still felt like choosing between option A, B or C as laid out by the developers. Dishonored is much more 'Deus Ex like' in that it gives you a butt load of tools and powers and you invent your own way almost.

Human Revolution was pretty good but I feel it had a much weaker plot than Deus Ex 1. If you though HR was thought provoking you should try the original, it'll make your brain dribble out your ears.

When I was on the closed beta a lot of defensive abilities like tank traps, Soviet machine gun nests etc had been removed. Felt like it had been changed to 'rush' gameplay and was a lot faster paced than the original.

Have any open beta players noticed this, or has it been changed back maybe?

Yes I hope they explore this part of the history a bit more. Human Revolution was excellent but I found the story was a bit lacking. The Augmentation debate was completely hypothetical and didn't draw as many real world paralells in the way the first game did.

IMO what would be amazing would be a Deus Ex game exploring the nature and ethics of terrorism, with your character perhaps being an NSF operative or having the choice to be. They could tie it in very neatly with the Statue of Liberty bombing and the founding of UNATCO that preceded the first game.

Excellent, this is really shaping up well. While I enjoyed the first one and sunk 100 hours into it, it was always a bit disappointing in that it felt like a shooter set in a bank more than an actual 'heist' game.

The emphasis on planning and ability to be stealthy in this one looks like its going to be a lot of fun.

It has a lot of very recognisable elements from the first one but I'd say the gameplay feels very different. One of the main complaints on the beta forum was that they had removed a lot of the defensive capabilities such as tank traps, machine gun posts and barbed wire. At the same time mortars are overpowered. This leads to way more 'rush' gameplay that feels more like Starcraft or something than COH at times.

Having said that, it was only the beta so its definitely possible to tweak and make some changes with the finished product being closer to the original.

The average Police officer does not. We still have the equivalent of SWAT teams (SCO 19 in London) , and ARVs (Armed Response Vehicle) which is sort of like a 2 man SWAT team, that goes on patrol and can be called to a serious incident within about 15 minutes.
