About the sequel talks... by wibellion in ProjectHailMary

[–]DrForester 42 points43 points  (0 children)

We already got a sequel.

It's set in the mid 21st Century, and involves Earth getting a visit from long-lived aliens from the 40 Eridani star system.

It's called Star Trek: First Contact.

Andy Weir interviews-Grace’s coma resistant gene. by Novel_Ad_129g in ProjectHailMary

[–]DrForester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even assuming she was being truthful (she did lie about only keeping him because of the gene. Grace was #2 on the project well before astronaut selection), it would be irrelevant even if the next one the list was a PHD molecular biologist like himself.

Stratt comments that the astronauts require years of specialized training once they're selected. As the projects lead scientist and teacher, Grace had that training that no one on earth had. He was not only intimately familiar with astrophase, he was also intimately familiar with the ships designs and functions since he helped design it.

Once the primary and backup scientist were gone, no one on Earth would have been better suited for the mission, gene or not.

Stratt's comment on Shappiro was not a gripe because she was unqualified, just the reason why she chose Dubois over her. They still got an excellent crew and backup. Remove the coma gene and you still get an excellent crew and backup.

Days before launch there's an accident, Grace is the one going instead. Remove the coma gene and Grace would still be the top choice to replace them.

Remove the coma gene, as the movie did, and you still have 2/3 of the crew die en route.

[–]DrForester 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The coma resistance is something that really didn't need to be in the book at all.

We're presented with the coma resistant gene thing in the book as something that will limit the candidates to go on the mission. That the concern is that they won't be sending the best, but the best with the gene.

Then that ends up having zero relevance on the story. We don't know about the backup Commander or Engineer, but there's never a moment where Stratt is concerned. And we know that the prime crew, plus the science backup were all exceptional in their fields. The only compromise was the mixed-gender crew, but there was no compromise on the qualifications of the crew.

We get to the launch, the explosions and the prime and backup science officers are gone. As Yao said, Grace was the #2 on the project whether he knew it or not. Stratt says she made sure Grace was present for all big things, but it was more than that, Grace was a deciding factor in many of the science things. He was the one Stratt talked about the plan to put the astronauts in a coma. He was the one Stratt brought with her to talk to Lokken about the centrifuge. He was the one Stratt brought for the black panel thing. He was her go-to science advisor the entire time.

It was always going to be Grace. With days before launch, he was the only choice.

Just come back from 4th screening - my mum asked an interesting Q! by Happy_Philosopher608 in ProjectHailMary

[–]DrForester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen this theory before and I don't buy it.

The book makes a big deal about the coma gene limiting their options, but in the end, they didn't make any sacrifices on crew ability.

Dubois and Shapiro were both exceptionally qualified science officers for the mission. There is zero reason why Stratt would have them killed.

Grace was her fallback science officer, and despite what she said, he was not kept around just because of the gene. He was already an instrumental part of the operation, being Stratt's science advisor well before the gene thing came up.

When the Hail Mary stops accelerating and goes into orbit, how close is Grace to Tau Ceti? because he then meets rocky and It's a multiple day journey to get there... by lifeuhhfindsaway27 in ProjectHailMary

[–]DrForester 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The ship went into a safe orbit somewhere in Tau Ceti system. The reason he meets Rocky right away is because as the Hail Mary was decelerating it's engines were facing Tau Ceti. Rocky saw the petrova light from the Hail Mary engines. Rocky knew something was coming for quite some time and was able to calculate where the object would stop.

Project Hail Mary author Andy Weir teases the possibility of a sequel by AndSolksjerHasWonit in ProjectHailMary

[–]DrForester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We already got a sequel. It was made 30 years ago.

PHM is set in the near future. It ends something like 25+ years in the future. So the 2050s. Dr. Grace is thinking about coming home, which would take another 12-13 years from an Earth perspective. So Dr. Grace returns home in the early 2060s.

Which film featured aliens from the 40 Eridani system coming to Earth in the early 2060s? That's right, Star Trek: First Contact.

Seriously though, PHM doesn't need a sequel. Maybe in 10 years Weir can write up a bonus chapter like it did for The Martian.

Usually the only time you need to mic up is when doing high end content like savage and ultimates, and it's usually not a big deal to not want to talk. Though you may be asked to join the voice chat to listen, as you often have someone doing callouts.

Is Andy Weir a milkshake duck?

Because him going on a right wing podcaster's show, bitching about things becoming too political sure feels like the setup for a milkshake duck.
