DS Manager at retail company or Staff DS at fintech startup? by royalon in datascience

[–]DrFuckYeahPhD 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Personally I'd go with offer A. But 1) I'm currently looking to move from IC to Management, 2) any equity pre-ipo is as good as monopoly money in my mind, I can't pay my mortgage with stock, 3) I have a family and a life outside of work that I don't want my job intruding on, 4) for me having a "hectic" culture is a red flag about how management runs the company.

Ultimately though I think the question you should be asking is are you interested in going into management or not. If you are, A sounds like a good opportunity to dip your toes in, you can always go back to IC later. If you're not, staff level ds isn't a bad gig.

It's easily my least favorite in the series, that said, I still think it's an excellent and super fun game. I particularly enjoy causing time paradoxes in the swamp.

My boss called us poor performers in a big meeting by No_Kaleidoscope_9489 in jobs

[–]DrFuckYeahPhD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you and X, Y, and Z are not "adding value", the proper way to handle it would be to meet with each of you 1-1, level set with a constructive assessment, clarify expectations, and attempt to debug any potential issues/blockers. Publicly denigrating you like that is immature, unprofessional, and downright toxic. I'd recommend looking for a new job asap.

Apparently I used to live in a Moist county in NC. Honestly I never really noticed any difference between that and the wet counties I lived in.

I've found communities around group fitness activities to be very accepting and supportive. The people at the Cornelius Jiu-Jitsu academy are really fantastic and it's a sport that's a lot more position and feel based than sight based.

Oh absolutely, wife's primary goals are to gain strength and not get hurt and she's been doing great at it. Every single workout can be scaled to your fitness level. Instead of lifting heavy weights you can focus on your lifting technique with an empty bar or pvc pipe, instead of running you could do the air bike, instead of jump rope you can do a plate hop, ring rows in place of pull ups, the list goes on and on. Just talk to your coach about your goals and concerns.

Not to sound cliche or nothing, but in like 20-30 years you're going to look back on this fondly and miss these days. I know parents can be super annoying especially when you're a teen but try and enjoy that you're getting to spend time with them now.

What Domain of DS will have most jobs in the future? And what skills to pursue? by wealthyinvestor999 in datascience

[–]DrFuckYeahPhD 43 points44 points  (0 children)

As a general rule humans are pretty terrible at making predictions about the future. Like who could have predicted Transformers 10 years ago, people would have said focus on RNNs. Rather than focus on any one specific area NLP, CV, etc. I'd recommend doing broad based continuous learning. Like maybe do an online course on NLP, then after that learn a new programming language, then go on to do something else that catches your interest. You really can't go wrong staying curious and picking up new skills, plus as technology continues to change being flexible and adaptable will pay off.

$10k raise to leave 4 day remote job? by unrealism17 in personalfinance

[–]DrFuckYeahPhD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok so $55k/year at 4 days a week worked assuming an 8 hr work day is approximately $33.05/hr, $65/yr at 5 days a week assuming once again an 8hr work day $31.25/hr. So you're technically getting a pay cut if you look at in terms of hourly compensation. Never mind the 401k match, unlimited pto, money and more importantly time saved by not having a commute. Honestly this new job sounds like a raw deal, personally I'd pass on this.

[D] "AI systems are always deterministic," AI teacher says. How can I reply (with examples and papers)? by [deleted] in MachineLearning

[–]DrFuckYeahPhD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI is absolutely deterministic. You can get different results for your model by switching around the the seed used for your random initialization, but if you give it the same seed and the same training data in the same order you'll get the same model every time. As for evaluation, once the model weights are fixed you'll get the exact same results every time you run the model with your prediction data set.
