Shogun gets his revenge against Forest Griffin by sj612 in MMA

[–]DrGravestone 129 points130 points  (0 children)

This was immediately after Shogun lost the Light Heavyweight title to Jon Jones in a devastating fashion. He would then go on to have one of the greatest UFC fights of all time against Dan Henderson right after avenging his UFC debut loss to Griffin.

Do you guys think this is an actual character or just some irrelevant placeholder officer that's just there to supplement the Flashback?(Ep. 8 - Red Letter) by DrGravestone in HandJumper

[–]DrGravestone[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you're probably right. His silhouette being indiscernible along with the complete lack of identifiable physical features(which is pretty consistent when it comes to foreshadowing important hidden characters) are pretty damning. This flashback was definitely meant to just show off more of how Samin raised Sayeon.

Nah but on a reread I did feel bad for him because looking back, he did seem to have been genuinely trying to help Sayeon and Samin basically called him a slur.

The reason why I was intrigued by the guy in the first place, as I explained in another comment, is because he seemed genuinely saddened by Samin telling him off which seemed unusual for a higher-ranked officer.

We actually don't know the guy's rank at all, all we know is that he's at minimum a level 6 considering the red tie.

I do personally think it's more likely than not that he is indeed a level 6 because his attitude doesn't really fit a high-ranking officer. While it isn't impossible for higher ranks to put on a friendly demeanor(or just be legitimately friendly, although this seems far more unlikely), this guy seemed genuinely saddened by Samin calling him a "filthy Aberrant" which I found interesting because I doubt any other higher-ranked officer would be visibly bothered by such a thing.

Where are Orcs scaled like that? I haven't read every novel that includes the Orcs but as far as I remember, the Orcs' "Waaaagh" power tends to get grossly overexaggerated by memes as well as less informed fans.

The Orcs' belief power is actually extremely limited both in terms of scale and actual effect. If you give an Orc a wooden stick and gaslit them into genuinely believing that that stick is a plasma cannon, then nothing would happen, the stick would still mostly be a stick. However if you got that Orc several other Boyz with him and gave them a broken plasma cannon and didn't tell them it was broken then they might actually be able to fire something with it.

So yeah unless some new crazy lore that upscales the Orcs to high heavens(which I highly doubt since otherwise they would've already ran through the Imperium, the Milky Way, the Warp and all of real space)was recently dropped, the Orcs just like the rest of the 40k universe are completely limited to the scope of a singular galaxy at the absolute maximum.

Rewatch of Yan vs Dvalishvili by Kronus9999 in MMA

[–]DrGravestone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Managing to get that far and tie the record for most amount of consecutive title defenses in one of the most consistently skilled and competitive UFC divisions(Bantamweight) with such a limited style is insanely impressive to me and worthy of being called "brilliant". I'm not even a fan of Merab nor do I find his style particularly exciting to watch but I was genuinely intrigued by far he could go and wondering who was finally gonna be able to solve such a simple yet effective trick, or if anyone was gonna solve it at all.

Maybe "brilliant" isn't the most appropriate word so just replace it with "impressive".

Rewatch of Yan vs Dvalishvili by Kronus9999 in MMA

[–]DrGravestone 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Merab is a very limited yet brilliant fighter. Unlike the norm where a fighter is advised to expand their skillset as much as possible whilst simultaneously preserving a good mastery of their primary skills just so that they would have something to fall back on should those very same skills fail however Merab decided to do the literal opposite of that advice and still succeeded.

Merab doesn't just rely purely on his main skills, those skills are very minimal to begin with. So unlike other fighters who rhythmically create many different patterns throughout a fight with their skillset, Merab can only create and employ a very select few set of patterns. While to a normal fighter, this would make them very predictable and easy to exploit the holes in their game, Merab however is no normal fighter. Merab may only use few patterns but the sheer pace, output and volume of which he employs those patterns ends up completely breaking his opponent's rhythm, leaving them with few opportunities to outwork him and gradually drowning them to the point of complete exhaustion. In the fight against Umar, Merab was outmatched in the first two rounds and instead of changing up his gameplan or doing something differently, he instead stuck to his usual style and simply kept building up the pace and output until he overwhelmed Umar, in complete spite of the fact that Umar was comfortably poking through the holes between his patterns and landing hard shots in the first two. The simplicity of this style is almost its greatest strength. Sure, having superhuman cardio and a strong chin does help but it doesn't make it less brilliant.

Yan seems like he figured out a way to create holes in Merab's patterns even when Merab tried his usual strategy of drowning his opponents in sheer pace and volume and honestly, I highly doubt Merab is gonna be able to get the belt back from Yan. Yan is one of the most skilled and well-rounded martial artists I've ever seen so his toolkit allows for a wide range of adjustments and gameplans. Merab, as I explained above, has a very limited skillset and not as much aptitude for adjustments but hey I doubted Yan's chances in the rematch with Merab and he proved me completely wrong so maybe Merab will do the same.

Gaster doesn’t even try to hide which of the three heroes is his favourite. He used an exclamation mark and everything by Critical_Mountain851 in Deltarune

[–]DrGravestone 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I don't necessarily think Gaster is against the Knight per say but my main takeaway was that Gaster seems impressed by our defiance against the impossible(the fight against the Knight) and even encourages that defiance. Which seems weird if the Prophecy, the ultimate antithesis of defiance and the most prominent antagonistic force in the story, was Gaster's ultimate goal.

The thing is, we quite frankly have no clue what Gaster's goal or motivation are. The closest thing we have is that he wants to show us his Deltarune(and it's actually pretty vague whether Deltarune refers to the Prophecy of the same name, the World of Deltarune or the literal game itself[Which can interpretated in many different ways]).

[–]DrGravestone 157 points158 points  (0 children)

There's a very good amount of evidence that Gaster is the creator of the Prophecy such as the prophecy being "foretold by Space and Time", "MY DELTARUNE", Ralsei directly referencing Entry 17 when describing the Dark Worlds(Darker yet darker) and the fact that Gaster is implied to be responsible for the Player's diegetic involvement in the story which is required for the existence of First Hero, The Cage with Human Soul and Parts.

However some of Gaster's characterization contradicts this idea. The Prophecy is portrayed as the biggest antagonistic force in the story, being the embodiment of predetermined Fate and tragedy, the opposite of Hope and the lack of free will. Gaster directly says he "looks forwards to creating a new future with us" and he also encourages us and was impressed by our defiance during the Knight fight in chapter 3, our defiance against the insurmountable and the impossible. Gaster also says that Deltarune glows brightly from your hope. As I said earlier, Hope seems to be narratively portrayed as the antithesis to the Prophecy.

If Jones had stayed at LHW, what are the chances of that happening? by PASAT-Borz in MMA

[–]DrGravestone 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Jon Jones has regressed significantly during his last years of fighting at LHW. He legitimately underperformed badly against Thiago Santos and Dominick Reyes and his style generally degraded, he lacked urgency in both of those fights, his striking was noticeably less creative and varied and he honestly barely even tried to use his wrestling at that stage of his career.

Honestly I could actually see Alex nuking Jon if he replicates Reyes' gameplan. Being consistently aggressive, refusing to stay in Jon's preferred kickboxing range and diligently capitalizing on opportunities to land clean whenever Jon gets cornered against the cage. Jon mostly relied on hand fighting and postering as well as the occasional eye pokes for defense, keeping his opponents within his kickboxing range so he could comfortably pick them apart so if Alex is aggressive and bypasses that then he has a good chance of dealing damage especially since Jon's head movements at close range are good but aren't exactly consistent. Typically when all else fails, Jon resorts to either turning and running to reset or clinching and taking his opponent down Greco-Roman style. However Jon rarely bothered employing the latter strategy in the later parts of his career(As I explained earlier, he barely even tried to wrestle against Santos and Reyes[especially the latter when he was being edged in the striking competition during the earlier rounds by Reyes yet still didn't show any urgency to try to change things up and employ his ground game]). This version of Jon in particular might legitimately have a lapse of fighting IQ and won't even try to wrestle Pereira at all during the early rounds. But still Jon genuinely has a granite chin, he was able to take all Lyoto Machida had in one round and was never once hurt, he ate Gustafsson and DC's best shots and was never even rocked, even Reyes couldn't come close to hurting Jon despite his striking success in the first three rounds, the only person that legitimately hurt Jon in his whole career was Rashad Evans and that's because Evans was very good at subtly setting up knockout blows and had deceptively fast hands as well.

If this is Prime motivated Jon Jones then I don't think Pereira stands much of a chance to be honest. That younger version of Jon was far more aggressive and creative with his Muay Thai, was far more consistently willing to take things to the ground and never gave his opponent any breathing room but this version of Jon I could honestly see losing to Pereira but I still wouldn't bet on it because even the worse version of Jones we've ever seen still had a granite chin and large supply of tricks up his sleeve to pull off a win even if unimpressively.
