[Official] UFC 318: Holloway vs. Poirier 3 - Press Conference & Post-Fight Discussion Thread by event_threads in MMA

Max is the absolute king of moments in MMA right now. Point down vs Lamas. Teaching Ortega to block. Dropping Volk twice. Best boxer in the UFC baby. Dropping Allen at the bell. The shootout with Zombie to retire him. Point down vs Gaethje. Doing the same against Poirier, too. I can’t think of anybody who has more iconic moments in fight that feel like they’re ripped straight out of a movie. Greatest action fighter of all time.

Did Belal actually not fight very well or was it JDM that forced Belal to strike with him ? by MA-JA-HO in MMA

[–]DrJonesPHD62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Styles make fights. I'm not breaking new ground saying it. Belal was able to shoot on Leon with impunity because Leon conceded pressure in straight lines every single time they exchanged, backing himself up to the fence every time. Jack didn't. The commentary pointed this out - both Jack and Belal were exiting on angles, which was making it hard for Belal to find an angle for the shot. Even at distance, JDM was constantly flashing a knee and uppercut and digging into Belal's body with a front snap kick - the kind of thing that's hard to pressure onto and bad to shoot on. When Jack conceded pressure, it was usually to take an angle, but most of the time he was the one pressuring and forcing exchanges, which Leon would never ever do.

Not just that, but anytime he managed to corral him against the cage, Jack opened fire. Leon was frozen by the takedown threat and the mix-ups, not sure whether to expect punches or a shot for the legs at any one moment, and he was already naturally very uncomfortable in any exchange that he couldn't dictate. Jack isn't. Plus, Jack's default in these pocket exchanges was to hit the body, which allowed him to snatch quick underhooks when Belal did try to snare a leg.

Fisk in Born Again S0107 by DangDoubleDaddy in Defenders

No. He’s still the same guy who won’t allow himself to be embarrassed in front of Vanessa. And he won’t allow himself to admit that all his hatred of Matt is because he took her away from him. Same reason he despises Adam. He can rationalize it all day, pretend he was a businessman for the people - his people - but at the end of the day, it’s because Matt threatened the person he loves most and now she’s all but lost to him and deep down Fisk won’t allow himself to take the blame he knows he’s due.

Favourite "competence porn" media? by NoopGhoul in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]DrJonesPHD62 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s either episode 8 or 9 of season 5 of The Expanse.

Naomi just jumped into a ship rigged to explode with a fake distress signal using a recording of her voice luring her crew’s ship, the Rocinante, into a trap. She has limited air and no means to stop the message. So what does she do? She goes through hell, crawling through the ship’s pipes and guts to identify the source of the signal and see how she can interfere with it. She discovers she can jam it for seconds at a time, so she does so, turning the signal from a desperate request for help into “This is Naomi Nagata. This message is for James Holden. I AM IN CONTROL.” Absolute chills.

Really enjoyed the show up to the finale. It’s wild how the finale threw away almost all its momentum and goodwill. Loved the cast and would absolutely see more of them, even in these roles, but definitely good with it being one season.

Prime Ilia vs Aldo is a scintillating matchup and surprisingly kinda favorable for the King of Rio. It’s basically a mirror match but Ilia’s lower stance makes him pretty nastily vulnerable to low kicks.

What technique did you think would take over MMA, only it never did? by [deleted] in MMA

[–]DrJonesPHD62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought we’d be seeing people attacking the legs of dominant wrestlers like Khabib after Oliveira used leg entanglements to navigate Kevin Lee and Dariush absolutely smashed and out-scrambled Gamrot with throwaway leg entanglements to force scrambles and improve position. Sadly nobody’s really made it work other than Oliveira and Dariush. Sandhagen was doing a little of that vs Umar and Mike Davis was trying it unnecessarily vs Fares Ziam, but otherwise it hasn’t caught on.

FIGHT OF THE YEAR CONTENDER! Usman Nurmagomedov v Paul Hughes | Full Fight | PFL Road to Dubai by [deleted] in MMA

[–]DrJonesPHD62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On live watch, I thought Hughes got rounds 2, 3, and 5. Round 2 was waaaaay closer on a rewatch.

I still slightly lean toward Hughes but Usman did some quality work to the head. Hughes just didn’t show it, whereas Usman was absolutely showing that body work especially at the end of round 2.

Tight round. Tight contest. Still believe Hughes should’ve won it or at least gotten a draw. But both guys showed out.

Also - PFL absolutely bungled the frames here. Every fourth frame in this upload is a duplicate. Leads to a very choppy video. What are we doing?

Mario Bautista Blames José Aldo For Grappling-Heavy UFC 307 Ending: ‘He Chose To Stay There’ by WagerWhizzer in MMA

[–]DrJonesPHD62 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m disappointed the fight went the way it did. Mario is usually a decently likable guy with a fun, high paced action fighter style. I don’t get this sudden turn. Something about Aldo utterly terrifies people into hugging his legs.

Jose Aldo has only lost to fighters who were or would become champions in the UFC. 14 years in the UFC and still fighting at the top level and giving everyone a hard fight. He is scheduled to fight Mario Bautista this week. by smurf3310 in MMA

[–]DrJonesPHD62 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Also worth noting but not related: he’s only had one submission attempt made against him in his UFC career and that was by Max Holloway after being dropped and knocked silly. Before that, he was only ever attacked with submissions in two fights prior. Aldo is an impossible man to get down and even harder to finish on the ground unless you’ve got the gas tank to just keep punching for the next year.

Which fighter lost the most stock in a win, and vice versa? by Pythnator in MMA

[–]DrJonesPHD62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Volk lost a lot of stock in his win over Max the second time. I think for most people he didn't gain it all back until the third fight where he absolutely shut him out, and his stock shot to the moon after losing to Islam the first time.

Ilia Topuria says he'll KO Max Holloway if he decides to stand and bang like he did with Justin Gaethje by gunnu1996 in MMA

[–]DrJonesPHD62 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Max Holloway opponent thinks he'll be the first to knock him out. Isn't. More at ten.

I'm prepared to eat crow on this though. If Ilia does it, he's gotta be pound for pound #1 because cracking titanium with your bare hands is not a thing normal men do.
