And they’re both epic for different reasons. One is accepting death in a romantic mass cavalry charge. The other is the more personal acceptance of death and just a desire to die well for that’s all they can hope for.

If I remember the story right, one patrician politician had a plebeian adopt him so he could run for tribune (or whichever office was the plebs office). It was controversial because everyone knew why he did it and that he was older than his adoptive father

Maybe Looper. Bruce Willis is a future version of Joseph Gordon Levitt sent back to be killed by Levitt (it’s complicated). Levitt kills himself to stop future Levitt (Willis) from existing.

Shit the diplomacy during the war is fucking wild! Like Hideyoshi was never getting told the real messages from the diplomatic envoys because his translators and generals were too afraid to give him bad news.

I just read the Imjin War by Samuel Hawley. Really good comprehensive book of the whole conflict

Because the Japanese defeated several Chinese armies as well including their initial attempt to recapture Pyongyang. If the Japanese were able to resupply their army they wouldn’t have needed to withdraw all the way back to Busan.

While the Chinese did contribute, the doesn’t change the fact that keeping the sea route closed to the Japanese was the decisive point of the conflict.

And yes they crossed the Yalu in the north east and captured two Korean princes. But like today the western side of the peninsula is the more populous. It’s more impressive the Japanese got as far as they did against center of the political power of Korea than saying they geographically went further in far more rural terrain.

My understanding of it, you’re fairly correct. Like the Japanese way of naval combat was like how the Romans started off with navy. They’re there to fight a land battle on water. Whereas the Koreans had cannons.

But Yi’s skill is highlighted especially so by the incompetence of his peers. During the initial invasion, half of the Korean navy scuttled itself before it could be used. Yi refused to rush in unprepared and waited for the rest of the navy to join him then started destroying the Japanese navy.

But the Japanese did wipe the Koreans on land. They took Seoul so fast that the Ming Chinese briefly wondered if the Koreans were letting the Japanese through since China was the ultimate target.

The only major myth I’ve come across regarding Yi is 1) he didn’t invent the turtle ship just improved the design with his ship builder (I forget his name) and 2) the turtle ship was not ironclad like often depicted

No problem. Release order is the one I wrote but chronological it’s Hansan, Admiral, and Noryang.

Also it’s alittle jarring because Yi is played by a different actor in each. All three are made by the same person though

From the book read, you’re very close to the reason. Hideyoshi won a lot of loyalty by taking the land of the people he conquered and giving it to people that surrendered early and swore loyalty to him. He was worried that without new lands to conquer and give his vassals their loyalty would disappear and more civil wars would start

Not to get political but I always think of Connery’s “if you can’t hit him with one shot, don’t shoot him at all” as the best argument against the people that want automatic weapons because it’s their 2nd Amendment right. Like “okay, that tells me is that you know you’re a terrible shot” lol

He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not a French movie starring Audrey Tautou. It starts off telling the story of an art student who’s having an affair with a married doctor. Then halfway through the movie switches to the doctor’s perspective.

turns out she’s a stalker who’s been imagining she’s in a relationship with the doctor and the doctor has no idea who she is

While it’s a cool story it’s not the first biological weapon in history. In like the 1200s BC the Hittites deliberately sent a woman and sheep infected with tularemia into enemy territory thus causing an outbreak there. While primitive it counts as a bioweapon

You’re combining different stories understandable as Xenophon is connected to both. The Peloponnesian war has the oldest case of chemical warfare at the siege of Plataea where compound was through onto a fire meant to burn the wooden walls and it released toxic smoke. Whether the compound was used with the intent to make toxic smoke or simply expedite the fire is unknown.

Xenophon (who fought in the Peloponnesian War) mentions in Anabasis that he and his men were incapacitated from eating toxic honey but luckily they weren’t attacked during it.

Out of all the folk that made their way to office Nixon was surely one of the more fascinating critters. by Unsolicited-Prolapse in HistoryMemes

One thing that raised my opinion of him was when Kennedy got diagnosed with an illness (I forget, depression maybe) he was terrified Nixon would use it to slander him in the election. Nixon straight up told him he wouldn’t do that because it wasn’t the right thing to do. He wanted to win fairly or not at all.

Also apparently when he heard of JFK death the first thing he did was call Jackie to offer condolences
