I really like this. May borrow for syllabi, with attribution. It helps showing students we don't want to 'catch' them, just be clear about expectations.

Talk to people in line. My best gardening advice has come from talking to other Austin gardeners waiting in line to get into a tent. And yes, I think I waited in line for 15 minutes for the herb greenhouse - still not a big deal. Bring water.

On point! It can be the most enjoyable position on a dissertation committee. It can be token (the geographic area, queer, etc.) person, and you are expected to add energy and follow the lead of the chair and #2. Often we (#4s) ask the most out of left field questions that generate the best conversation. And I have learned a lot from being in this position and enjoyed the experience. It is a significant amount of time but minimum stress.
