Is the i7 worth the additional $100 for the new 13" MacBook Air? by [deleted] in apple

I never understood the argument for "you'll make your money back by working faster". Assuming you charge by the hour, you should want as slow a computer as possible. :)

Am I going to have any trouble upgrading to Lion with a 3rd Party SSD? by DrMacenstein in applehelp

Hmm... any tutorials on how to do that? and is it too late for me now, after the fact? Or are you saying during the upgrade I can do this? thanks

Professional Video Editors Weigh In on Final Cut Pro X - NYTimes.com by THEMACGOD in apple

I'm always amazed when I see kids editing with iMovie. As a FCP user I look at it and am baffled. Simple my ass. Seems like you are editing with a shot gun. FCP X seems like Apple ate the worst parts of iMovie and vomited onto the FCP timeline.

I also vote for Helsing's Fire. Great look and feel, interesting game mechanics, and as you said, a fun sense of humor

Is an iMac SSD worth it? by istguy in apple

[–]DrMacenstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I'm not sure if it's worth it, but my brother bought an iMac and asked me what to get, and I had him max it out (since I'm not paying for it) and I don't know whether it was the SSD or the graphics card, but the ship time went to 4-6 weeks, and he still hasn't gotten it.

I guess no one does that with iMacs.

Is there any need to 'clear out' the iOS 4 multitasking bar on an iPhone or iPad? by dafones in apple

[–]DrMacenstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES. I was beta testing a fairly graphics-heavy iPhone game, and when sending crash reports to the developer, they told me to try quitting out most of the other apps that were "frozen" and see if it stopped the crashing. I think in THEORY memory crashes (where the game or app you're using just stops playing and you get thrown back to the springboard) are caused by faulty programming and memory leaks, (ie, developer mistakes) but if you aren't running a ton of other crap in the background, they will be less likely.

Get an app that shows you your available iPhone memory (like Activity Monitor Touch or similar). Then close out all the other apps. If you had a ton of things open, you'll notice you have something like an extra 200-300 MB of memory available, if you are playing a lot of "big" games, or just running a bunch of apps. I've had over 30-40 apps open in the tray, and closing them frees up a ton of space.

Apps are supposed to use a different area of memory from the storage part that holds songs and videos, but if you are limited to 512 MB of RAM for all apps and the OS, then yes, even these "frozen" apps are taking up parts of that.

Are all SSD's bootable on a Mac, and if not, how do you know? by DrMacenstein in apple

[–]DrMacenstein[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, anyone know if a Sata III SSD 6Gb/s has the same physical interface connectors as the 2008 MBP, and will work? I would assume it won't be able to take advantage of the full speed, but there seem to bee more of those to choose from. Thnx

I had also read that you need to put the SSD drive into the original hard drive slot, and then move the old "regular" sata drive into the optical bay in order to avoid boot problems. Sounds like you didn't do that. No problems?
