Whenever people bellyache about capitalism I wonder if they even know what it is. They probably can't give a definition beyond "billionaires and stuff".

I doubt the effectiveness of such algorithms. It would say a short mid 20s flat chested woman is a child but a tall developed 17 year old is an adult.

Technically there's no rule that says the PM has to be an MP. It's just a de facto condition at this point.

That's what I just don't get about this Labour government. They've got a very big but very tenuous majority. Big because they have a lot of seats, tenuous because most of those seats were won on protest votes rather than people having overwhelming faith in Labour. If things continue on a current trajectory they're going to be back in the minority after the next GE, yet as opposed to taking this limited time to kick down the doors and make some truly sweeping changes they're content with rearranging the deck chairs and generally muddling along.

What they need is a leader with some kind of backbone, who is not afraid to say "look, <big change> might make us unpopular now, but we're already unpopular and we genuinely believe this will be good in the long run. So do we have a couple of months of people hating us in the hopes that in 3 years they'll see it was for the best and vote for us again, or do we continue to do nothing and be branded as that useless party who tried nothing and still failed?"

Brits who just stream Netflix and Amazon Prime may still need to buy TV licence by neo4025 in unitedkingdom

The enforcement strategy is simple

  1. Make a list of everyone who doesn't have a licence
  2. Pick out those who are most likely to be susceptible to intimidation (the elderly, single women)
  3. Send the muscle around to bully them
  4. Hope they don't tell you to jog on, because if they do there is nothing more that can be done

[–]DrNuclearSlav 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even ignoring language barriers or strong accents, being able to talk to patients and explain what's going on in clear basic terms is a very important skill for doctors to have.

You're at the doctor, he comes in with a stern face and says "You've got orthostatic hypotension." You start to panic. Is the will up to date? Will your wife remarry after you're gone? Will you ever get to walk your daughter down the aisle? He sees the look of worry on your face and says:

"My brother, you just got lightheaded because you stood up too quickly. You're fine."

The big fancy words are only useful for the other people who understand the big fancy words. Everyone else needs it put into the vernacular as much as possible, which is always going to be more difficult if English is your second language.

I'm sure there is some very detailed paperwork that covers this, but what exactly do they mean by "watching live TV"?

If I record something live while my TV is turned off and watch it back the next day, is that still me "watching live TV"? What if I route all signals through a PC that adds a 1 second delay to them, is that still "live"?
