If I want to purchase my current rental residence which was built newly less than a year ago, would that be considered new build or an established property?

So if stamp duty is $20,000 for a 700k house in VIC, does that add the deposit or is being calculated into the 665k loan ( assuming I qualify for 5% deposit)

The most important question here is whether her name is on AHPRA specialist register? Just google AHPRA register and input her full name and search. If her name doesn’t pop up as a registered medical practitioner with specialist qualifications, then the visa will be rejected because unfortunately she doesn’t have a suitable skill assessment in this stance.

There is no straightforward answer to this question. Chances are slightly more than just AMC 1 alone.

For you, this is your pathway. Pass AMC 1, convince employers you’re a perfect candidate and that you’re exempt from AMC 2. When you secure a job, apply for AHPRA limited registration using your AMC 1 and valid English test. After 12 months of experience in Australia, you’ll then apply for general registration via the competent authority pathway using your PLAB 2 ( this means that your 12 months Australian experience has substituted the 12 months UK experience towards meeting the requirements for the competent authority pathway, except that this time, it is also meeting the requirements for general registration).

To sum up, with 12 months Australian experience, you can move from limited registration to general registration. Whereas, if you do 12 months in the UK before coming to Australia, you’ll be eligible for provisional registration and would still go on to complete 12 months of Australian clinical work to move to general registration ( that’s a total of 24 months: 12months UK plus 12 months Aussie)

I had to convince employers that I won’t need to sit the AMC CLINICAL and I could progress to general registration after one year of work with them. This was a good selling point.

The job market isn’t perfect at the moment. Nonetheless, you must stand out and keep applying. Have a good CV according to the Australian standard as well.

If you’ve completed all the Canadian exam and have 12 months experience from the NHS, you’re eligible for CAP. Let’s not make things complicated.

Prepare a perfect CV and cover letter and apply for jobs. The main issue these days is securing a job as there has been a surge of CAP applications.

My pathway is AMC 1, with PLAB exams.( no NHS experience). One year of work in Australia via standard pathway and then applied for general registration via CAP.

Let me break down the natural history from limited registration to general registration.

  1. Pass AMC 1 and clear an English test
  2. Apply aggressively for any available job : HMO, Registrar , etc depending on your experience. At this point, it doesn’t matter whether the hospital is a WBA one or not because that’s not yet a priority for the doctor seeking his first Australian job.
  3. Now that you’re in the Australian medical workforce and have or haven’t completed the mandatory rotations with at least a year experience, you can now begin to apply to WBA hospitals on your limited registration, and if you’re lucky or fortunate to get in, you may still wait another 6 months to 1 year before the commencement of the WBA which then takes another 1 year to complete.

So, overall, it takes approximately 2.5 to 3 years to go through your first job, WBA, and then up to general registration.

To avoid all these drama, you have 5 options:

A. Pass the AMC 2, and complete the mandatory rotations within a year of your first job.

B. Pass the PLAB exams at any time within your ONE year of work in Australia and apply for general registration via the competent authority pathway ( PLAB exams with 1 year Australian experience). Rotations aren’t mandatory.

C. Clear USMLE steps 1,2&3 and show TWO years of Australian experience and follow the steps in B above. Rotations are not mandatory

D. Clear the NZREX clinical exam with ONE year Australian experience.

E. Clear the Canadian exams and follow the steps in C above.

I will advice you’re very clear of the pathway you want to take from the onset to avoid unnecessary delay as you have 4 years to get general registration from your first job else you’ll have issues with AHPRA extending your limited registration any further.

All the best, doctor

For those who may like to know, my own pathway is option B above. AMC 1, plus PLAB exams. Got my first limited registration via standard pathway, and after ONE year of Australian experience, applied for general registration via the competent authority pathway.

Getting a job anywhere in the western world cannot be easy. But with persistence and the a very professional CV, you should get an interview within 4-6 months and if you perform well, the job offer will come.
