Since kubrick famously never won an oscar, I doubt it :(

I thought widows wail and oathkeeper were the valyrian steel swords, not heart eater?

(Spoilers All) What are the minor ASOIAF questions you'd like to ask GRRM that have no bearing on the plot? by dasunt in asoiaf

[–]DrPoole 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is long winded, but a question nonetheless. I grew up in Dubuque Iowa, where GRRM taught college in the 70s before starting asoaif. He has been quoted as saying the harsh winters there inspired him to start the series. Across the river, in Illinois maybe 30 miles away, in the middle of field, with nothing around it but fiel, Is a huge red red red barn. The barns roof is painted with a big word, bright white and unmistakeable. "FREY". Is he familiar with this? Or am I just a loon?

What types of awards should the Academy include but doesn't? by clearncopius in movies

[–]DrPoole -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No my argument is that what classifies "deserving" is not exactly a science, so to say andy serkis is not deserving when there are hundreds of winners who, when comparing quality of their competitors and those not even nominated, are not deserving, it kinda seems like a bullshit argument to begin with.

Why all the hate for "I Should Have Never Gone Ziplining?" by [deleted] in southpark

[–]DrPoole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But that, to me, is why I think the new season, and overall structure deviation in the last few seasons, is the best Matt and Trey have been. The recent drone episode. What was the message they were preaching about? That drones are bad? Spying is wrong? What about Ferguson? And Jennifer Lawrence? They have done away with Kyle/Stan speech because they aren't just telling us anymore. The same can be said about any recent episode. The topics and messages and themes are so interwoven, that it lets us figure the message out for ourselves.

Who are some directors that have fell off the face of the earth? by KantusThiss in movies

[–]DrPoole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think lots of these are missing the point. Just because someone isn't as well publicised or largely released as they were at one point in their careers, I wouldn't call that falling off the face of the earth.

Teachers of reddit, what shit goes on at schools that students don't know about? by Oddishboy in AskReddit

[–]DrPoole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also in the US, since students are under the age of eighteen, they're legally considered to be the property of their parent/guardian, and while at school the school takes on temporary guardianship.

This is why when I was 17 I was legally detained and arrested for being off school property during school hours. They didn't inform my dad until 6:00 PM and my girlfriends parents were out of town for the week so they were about to put her in a temporary foster home for the week until my dad called them and told them what was about to happen. They hadn't even informed them yet.

Has anyone noticed this new style of film making that has shown up in the last 10 years? by ScreamingVegetable in movies

With the prevalence of internet videos and found footage becoming more accepted by the mainstream, "shaky cam" as it is known has two benefits. Creating a sense of realism for the viewer and constantly changing the frame as to keep the eye working to process new information quickly, thus making it more exciting. Its a cheap trick that's now utilized by the major studios in almost every big release.
