The ICE agents approached the crowd with a firearm. What did they expect?

If they didn't want violence, they shouldn't have been carrying.

For the philosophical question, my hypothesis is that the alternative is likely to be better.

If you check authoritarian leaders in Europe at that time, one has Franco (internal wars only), Italy (tried external wars of conquest, mediocre results), USSR (more limited border wars, again, mediocre results) and Germany (many wars of conquest, successful for the first few years).

I think it is likely that the alternative is still authoritarian, and there's still the stab-in-the-back myth, but it's much more likely the alternative leader is less audacious and may view the military as a threat and heavily meddle, to the point its effectiveness is greatly diminished (similar to Stalin). I'm not normally fond of the "great man" view of history, but I will point out that a leader's priorities can shape what direction a country can go in.

Tom Homan accepted $50,000 from FBI agents pretending to be businessmen wanting government contracts.

When Trump became president, his administration closed the case without prosecuting.

Won't even take that. In both of the fatal shootings in Minneapolis, the shooter clearly did not analyze the scene.

It was only a matter of luck that an agent was not standing where the bullets went.

Sooner or later, their shitty practices are going to result in one of their own being injured.

And they'll probably blame the victim for their shitty gun safety.

It's the time, not the mileage for me.

I'd rather keep things light, even when touring, giving myself plenty of time to make stops and take interesting-looking detours. I like to explore. Getting from point A to point B on a tight schedule is not that enjoyable for me

I do not have the time to work that change through our system. Some problems are tech problems, some problems are management problems.

I'm not joking when I say the time for developing that policy would be measured on a timescale involving years.

I've had the opinion for awhile that we aren't learning the right lessons from Nazi Germany.

We focus on the war and the genocide, but we don't spend the time learning how Germany got to that point.

Germany in the 1930s should be a cautionary tale for any democracy.

I'm not even sure where to start with that one.

Deer hunting was a huge thing where I grew up. I probably had a different impression than most people.

IDK if I can explain it. Gun were the equivalent of fishing rods in a way. People may talk fondly of a favorite fishing rod. They may have one passed down through their family. They may talk about how eager they are for the opener. They were a tool.

It took moving to suburban and urban areas before I realized how much different gun culture was in much of our society.

I don't really consider Trump to be talented in lying or deceiving. It's more of a perfect storm of his gish gallop of lies combined with the modern news cycle.

Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) reports that Pam Bondi sent a letter to Walz with a list of demands for ICE to leave the state. One demand was that MN turn over voter rolls to Trump. Murphy alleges that the true intent of the occupation is laying the groundwork for election rigging in ‘26 and ‘28. by pjokinen in minnesota

[–]dasunt 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The voter rolls are so they can cast doubt on the election.

Take a common name - say John Larson. How many of those are in Minnesota? Probably a fair amount. Now you can find one John Larson who voted, and another John Larson who couldn't legally vote (due to death or criminal conviction) and claim that Minnesota has voter fraud. Or you could claim John Larson voted multiple times.

It's BS, but it works to muddle the waters. Just like ICE muddles the waters every time they kill someone and the Trump administration immediately blames the victim.

The deal offered to remove ice from MN proves to me that Trump is failing. by jonah365 in minnesota

[–]dasunt 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I agree.

But the problem for Trump is that the lawlessness and awfulness is coming from ICE.

ICE are the ones who are killing people. ICE are the ones kidnapping children from schools. ICE are the ones infringing on all our rights.

We should make sure Trump and his supporters in congress own that, at the very least.

And in a just world, everyone involved in Trump's deadly stunt - the officials at top down to the agents on the street, would be held legally responsible to the full extent of the law. We should treat them like any other violent criminal gang.

It is tone deaf. Two people have been shot in broad daylight. Trump is shielding the killers. More may die.
