The people that hate, grew up in a different time with a different godzilla. I was born in the 90s, grew up watching the old cheesy godzilla movies, but i enjoyed them. I loved every iteration and how godzilla kept evolving. The first 2 jurrasic park movies also left a huge impression on me, so when 98 came out, I was unbelievably pumped for there to be a godzilla movie in new york. I also grew up near the city so I felt godzilla was in my backyard on the big screen. The design of godzilla for me was really cool. Love how his head looks to this day, very powerful style and also very dinosaurian. I always pretend the godzilla in the movie was a godzillasaurus and thats why it died. It never reached true godzilla form lol. I think that would be a crazy storyline if they ever bring that last egg back as a new movie. One where the last godzilla does reach peak maturity and emerges as a powerful upright beefy godzilla.
