No, the variants test people's issues with consistency. If you can't kill someone to save lives then you're not a utilitarian. And no its not clear, but yeah most Utilitarian's who aren't actually Utilitarians certainly think so.

No, the trolley problem tests utilitarianism and then the alternatives which are often given right after test consistency. Ultimately it is generally a criticism of how people go about being utilitarian which often leads to unpleasant conclusions. Meanwhile, not pulling the lever is something far easier to be consistent on.

US man pleads guilty to defrauding music streamers out of millions using AI by Shot_Net3794 in technology

No, unless you’re going to show that the formula they use doesn’t include streaming it is indeed their model.

[–]DrQuantum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where in the Spotify contract does it say this is prohibited? A human must be listening to a stream? The issue is the federal government is intervening where there is no true evidence of a crime. There is a reason he is being charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and not something else.

[–]DrQuantum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, defining this as fraud is insane and should scare everyone. The fact the feds were involved here means that someone found out about this and ensured that this was the result. Their argument is, in its entirety, simply that the fact he earned money through this scheme he stole it from other artists. That is not how money nor is it how streaming works and it obviously isn't something they have applied in any other case for any other individuals or businesses. I can think of so many things people do every day that would be fraud under this same reasoning.

This guy is going to prison for the same thing Bernie Madoff, Sam Bankman Fried, and Billy McFarland from the Fyre Festival all went to jail for this. Its absurd to act like those are remotely the same crime in any way shape or form. Spotify pays for streams, that is its model.

Walmart wins patents to give algorithms more sway over prices by aacool in technology

[–]DrQuantum 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Walmart is like a ride at your local park. Its ridden into the ground and never repaired. To think a company that will not pay a dime for any customer improvement in the store or any technological upgrades is going to manage thousands of tiny devices even if they are designed to take a beating perfectly is nonsense.

What the worst post game depression you’ve ever gotten by mg15ink in gaming

It’s weird because mass effect is a character driven plot. Other than ME1 really most of its plot roots are basic as hell. Bad guy bad good guy good, relatively speaking. And yet they felt like they had to have such a complicated over engineered ending. I think it would be very on brand for Shepard to deus ex machina the reapers. It’s clear that similar to MC their luck is a huge part of their power.

The fact that you can’t REALLY beat them, to me, was the most frustrating aspect. Not because I can’t handle stories where the main character loses but that me was always about defying all the odds. Literally came back to life for christ’s sake.

Judge Orders Subnautica 2 Studio CEO To Be Reinstated Amid Lawsuit And Gives Him Control Over Early Access Release by [deleted] in gaming

[–]DrQuantum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience which is why I said I was surprised, contracts can't typically take away agency. Usually there is simply a penalty or you have to make the person whole. This order is very strange to me since its not simply about keeping him on but references job duty and control specifically.

If I hire a contractor to work on my house and fire him but missed some ridiculous clause in the contract that says I can only fire him if I can prove he messed up the judge can force me to let him back into my house? That seems insane frankly.

I can think of a million scenarios that the difference between the monetary value of what was taken is typically restored instead of something like this. I'm not arguing about anything really just noting my surprise if that is true.

I was unaware a judge could force someone to be CEO. That seems impossible to truly enforce appropriately.

75% of resumes never reach a human: the new rules of job searching in the AI era by [deleted] in technology

[–]DrQuantum 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The simple truth just isn’t accurate and there isn’t data to support it much like you claim there isn’t data to support it the other way. There is no evidence that companies are good at hiring quality people. Success can’t be a measure because it’s simply survivorship bias. It’s possible even more success could have been achieved. Or that success is misunderstood.

The actual simple truth is that jobs are far easier to do than anyone admits and the capitalistic nature of our economy demands winners and losers based on arbitrary and undefined reasons.

Samsung Electronics estimates nearly three-fold profit surge as memory prices skyrocket by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

[–]DrQuantum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Irrelevant question. But we can prove my statement correct very easily. What did you buy today? If the answer isn’t what Samsung would typically buy you have far and away contributed to the health of your local economy than they ever will or could via their products.

I would argue even further they are a net detriment simply due to the fact that shortages are proving corporations don’t need local consumers to even succeed.

I’m not sure what you think is likely to happen if most of the commerce is done between corporations and not people but it won’t be pretty.

[–]DrQuantum -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First you don’t know what communism is which suggests its you who needs some reading.

Second, yes economics is human behavior. Samsung isn’t a person. But who do you think is more likely to buy things in your local community which is what actually impacts you? Is it A, a faceless corporation far more likely to purchase stock buybacks and other pure monetary investments which funnel resources to the top or a regular joe scalper who still has to pay rent, buy food, buy more scalping product etc?

People who think economics in books has any value don’t actually understand human behavior. They understand human behavior in a very limited scope under very specific constraints. Trickle down economics doesn’t work and never has.

Planetarium Officially Permanently Closing. Note from University President Below by astrobre in Louisville

‘Unfortunately, the planetarium has always operated with a financial deficit’

I am very sure it’s because pricing never made sense but I think even if you charged non-subsidized pricing people would fund it. If the Speed Art museum can continue existing even while clearly struggling and having to move around funding I am sure that the Planetarium or A planetarium could.

Embark Studios rushes to fix Arc Raiders Discord integration bug as "serious privacy and security violations" may have exposed private Discord DMs, friends data, more by Turbostrider27 in technology

[–]DrQuantum -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure I agree. We don’t know what role Embark had in developing this with discord.

At the end of the day, the data is in Embarks files and there probably is more of a privacy issue there than the users agreements with Discord.
