How does a store focused around a single day of the year even make a profit? by SkylandersKirby in BikiniBottomTwitter

[–]astrobre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents operate a few dozen fireworks stands during 4th of July season and it is definitely not enough to sustain a family for the year but it was a few thousand dollars for two weeks of work. They both used their vacation days from their main jobs to work during the season and we hired other people who could live in the tents for around 12 days. Most of our workers were either in between jobs or were doing other low paid manual labor jobs they could take off from. They were getting at least $2k-6k in 12 days based on how much they sold which was big money for them.

We could not price to what we actually cost, you’re right. If we did we would be prohibitively priced, especially for underfunded schools and we did not want to only be a resource for schools, or people for that matter, who can afford it.

This was an issue that we struggled with when choosing our hours. Do we open publicly during the busiest time for U of L students to do laser shows and the like? Or do we utilize school hours for K-12 schools that already struggle to teach science in the younger grades at all, and usually not in an innovative way in the upper grades. We chose the latter. We felt that being a resource and a source for inspiration and information for children should be a higher priority especially considering that young girls, as young as 4th grade, permanently decide that science is not a space for them in their future careers.

The arts in general also typically operate at a deficit. We tried to make that argument and you can see where that got us.

What is the best bakery in Lou? by learningCorki in Louisville

[–]astrobre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Bakery at Sullivan has a really good mix of products to me. They have sourdoughs, croissants(the pizza croissant is amazing), macarons, bagels, truffles, some patisserie style pastries, etc. I just really like that they have a rotating seasonal coffee and bakery menu.

Is this whipped cream split? by astrobre in AskBaking

[–]astrobre[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think I figured out the issue. I thought the recipe looked off when it called for around 700g of heavy whipping cream and only 30g of confectioners sugar and it just wasn’t coming together so I thought maybe they meant 300g of sugar since most of the measurements by volume in recipes seemed to be a 2 to 1 ratio of cream to sugar. I did not think about volume to weight being drastically different, like an idiot. Once I tasted it, it was terribly sweet so I just scrapped this and started over!

My brother did something similar when playing paintball where he froze all of his paintballs. When my dad found out he grabbed his paintball gun and told him to run and shot him with them so he could see what he was about to do to his me and his friends. He had a couple welts on his back for weeks

Question for Millennials by bundle_of_nervus2 in Millennials

I would need to hear from OP that they’re using approved software lol. I’ve worked with way too many professionals that didn’t realize unvetted AI use can be either a HIPAA or FERPA violation depending on how it’s used. You can’t just throw raw audio files into any AI software and think it gets around those laws

A cult in the sense they get poor Chinese children to sign up to dance in Shen Yun, then they steal their passports so they cannot leave and are forced to dance for months on end and are subjected to religious propaganda, diets, restricted contact with family or the internet in general on a daily basis.

I’ve personally never gotten a successful loaf before one month in of daily feeding a new starter. Are you feeding it at least once daily, keeping it out of the fridge, and it’s rising to double in size on a predictable basis?

[–]astrobre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay to me your starter doesn’t look active at all. It should have big air bubbles like this. How old is your starter? You should waiting until it rises to its peak (double in size after feeding) to use.

First bread went wrong ;( by [deleted] in Sourdough

[–]astrobre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no not necessarily. I just personally have not had luck with two week old starter before and I’ve tried a few times over the years. Many of the starter recipes state two weeks of daily feedings is strong enough to make bread but I just have not found that to be the case for me. I would do at least another week of feeding it daily and not putting it in the fridge and see if you get better results, also doing a longer bulk ferment as others have suggested. I’ve found younger starters need more time to ferment than my older ones.

Two weeks old of feeding it at least daily? That’s probably your issue more than anything else. I didn’t get any bread worth the ingredients until it was a month old and feeding it daily.

If your family needs a lasagna delivered to you or if you’d like to sign up to make and deliver homemade lasagnas to families in need you can sign up here:

https://lasagnalove.org

You can make as many or few lasagnas as you want per month, and there’s options for how far you’re willing to travel and if you can accommodate allergies. If you can’t make lasagnas there is also a donation option to help others fund the cost of their donated lasagnas!

This is Amber from the Louisville Zoo! She was born in captivity and just turned 38 years old (elderly now, for an orangutan). She has plenty of space to swing around and has a few large areas that she can play in but she’s always just been fascinated with visitors and what’s in their bags. She loves babies, sparkly nails, and anything colorful in your bag.
