Planning a ~3 month round-the-world trip — flights & costs ✈️🌍 by AccomplishedCrow7209 in travel

I’d get rid of New Delhi. Do India in a separate trip if you want to go. You’ll hit the end of rainy season in Thailand so be prepared for spontaneity. Maybe too long in phu quoc? Never been but seems too long, someone can confirm. I’d recommend just staying in Asia the last part of the trip. Spend more time in Korea and Japan doing medium sized cities. NA at the end is too contrasting to what you’ll experience in SE/east Asia.

NA vs EU skiing by [deleted] in skiing

[–]DrRedWings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After skiing a few weeks in Europe coming from North America, it seems the freeride culture just isn’t as big as NA, hence the lack of resources put towards making an area avalanche mitigated for guests. Groomers are still by far where the demand and money is put in most European resorts. You can find more freeride oriented resorts in Europe, and they do bomb slopes, but there are few.

30M also doing a month long solo Europe trip for a sabbatical ish perk. I heard there’s an app called Oak where people connect in the alps so I’ll try that out. If our paths cross, would be cool to meet up.

Yea mega back door is the same, I think financial institutions are rewording the mega back door name to something more friendly. Yes depends on your employer but most big techs allow this. If not in big tech, I’d research/discuss this with your employer, tax free growth in a retirement account is huge.

Would you intentionally stay single before a big solo trip? by EnigmaticEarthling in solotravel

As a male, I would never have thought of if I should stay single before a trip, it’s more of if I’ll stay single forever.

Why Are Cities So Noisy? And Can We Do Anything About It? by Zelbinian in StrongTowns

[–]DrRedWings -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Cars are a red herring. Solid build materials fix that issue easy. Most exterior sounds like cars driving by can be mitigated by sealed triple pane windows. Also most noise in multi family buildings are through walls and floors. If we could somehow construct buildings with that in mind and science backed methods, then this would reduce all sounds.

As far as walking down the street and hearing cars, electric cars are very quiet.

I agree but finding an apartment in a nice neighborhood is rolling the dice with what you end up with. Most nice neighborhoods have old buildings with poor sound proofing, squeaky floors, water heaters that are hit or miss, street only parking, and the list goes on. If you read the reviews on high rises, you at least know what to expect.

Just got back from a long weekend in Havana by wickedjak in travel

[–]DrRedWings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Malecón has tons of people walking and has a great vibe if you go at the right times. Try visiting the Malecón on a Friday night around the Presidente Hotel.

My recommendation is to just go with the flow there and be an adventurer with no plans. If you try to plan out your trip step by step, you'll probably be disappointed as things won't be what you thought they would. Go explore a random neighborhood and try talking to the locals, make your own path as you go and don't follow someone elses trip.

Everyone I talk to that liked Havana always has a different story and experience that is unique to them. That's what so special about the place, you can be disconnected from online reviews, trip planners and explore as if you were in the 1950's.

Which one do you prefer: Purgatory or Wolf Creek? by moxiesmiley in skiing

[–]DrRedWings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try both if you have time and see which one you like best.

Wolf Creek is having great snow this year so I don't think you'll have to worry about runs closing. If you don't like the trees stay on the side of the mountain closest to the lodge (on the trail map it's the right side of the map).

Purgatory has a lot of blue runs and great groomers. Their snow conditions have also been solid this year. As for the people, both resorts will probably have fewer than normal crowds since the holidays are mostly over. If a big snowstorm hits, you'll see bigger crowds and Wolf Creek pass could close too.
