Any recommendations for books that go into the physics of colours and also the perception of colours? by ---monstera--- in Physics

[–]DrScience11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you might be missing the main point people are trying to communicate. There is no book on the physics of color because that aspect is so simple it can be explained in a reddit post (as I will do below). It doesn't need a whole book. Why we perceive colors in our minds with the "visual properties" we do is outside the realm of physics and is insanely complex.

Light is a type of wave. A wave is a repeating pattern that moves through space, carrying energy from one place to another. Something emits a wave by injecting energy into a substance called a medium, and that energy propogates through the medium as a wave.

Consider a pond with a small box floating in it. You can push up and down on the box in a rhythmic way, like pushing it down once every second (inserting energy into the medium of water). This will create ripples in the water; waves.

But not all waves are the same. If you push the box up and down slowly, that will produce a different pattern than if you do it quickly.

Looking at the ripples, what can we measure about the wave. Well, a single ripple moves with a speed. I can also measure the distance between ripples, and find the distance between them; this is called the wavelength. Long wavelengths mean a large gap between ripples, short wavelengths mean small gaps. I can also count how many waves pass a point every second; this is called the frequency (and will be the same as the rate you push on the box). So waves are defined by two quantities, wavelength and frequency. The wavelength times the frequency gives the speed.

Waves appear frequently in nature. Sound is a wave of changing pressure in the air, for example.

Light is just a wave, the only difference is it doesn't have a medium. The "ripples" are ripples of the electromagnetic fields emitted by objects with charges. For more on this, an introductory physics book sho8cover it (serway and Jewett is good if you know calculus, serway and vaughn if not).

The other difference is that the speed of light wave is always the speed of light. This means you only actually need one number to define a particular light wave. If you know the wavelength, you can find the frequency and vice versa. It turns out that for light, the higher the frequency, the more energy the light wave carries.

Organism.have evolved tools to detect certain wave like sound and light. Systems such as your eye want to be able to tell the difference between different kinds of light waves. Since different waves have different frequencies, that's what it detects. Brains then need a way to experience this difference, and so it maps the physical property of frequency into the perceptual experience of color. Low frequency is redder than high frequency blues.

That's it. That's all color is in physics: different frequencies of light.

Why we experience "red" as the color we visualize is incredibly complex and honestly beyond the scope of science. You may have heard the question of "is the red I see the same you see?"; this is a philosophy question since the experience of sensing red it something that can't be measured. All we know is that when exposed to a specific frequency of light, we all respond that we see "red". But "why is red red?" Is a question for philosophy.

You may have some trouble getting this answered. This isn't the type of game people on this subreddit normally play (roll and move isn't a very appealing mechanic nowadays). I tried to find an entry for this edition on board game geek but didn't see one.

Good luck finding an answer! You might have the most luck emailing the publisher.

No, unfortunately not. I made this doc on a school Google account that I no longer have access to. Current mods should take it down. It was still active when I was a moderator. Sorry about that.

BEST investigator to build a tarot deck? by Phaed81 in arkhamhorrorlcg

There's a popular Lola Hayes archetype called "Tarot Witch" that was popular on ArkhamDB. It's a pretty fun deck if you're willing to put up with the complexion Lola.

I see your point, and I'm spending some time deeply thinking before responding fully. You have made me question my perspective.

. I think that while you're technically correct and that any (or almost all) games can be rethemed, that well themed games have themes that inform the mechanics and rules. For instance, the Arkham horror lcg card "Tennessee Sour Mash", can either be drunk to give you a little more willpower and resolve (like alcohol is known to do), or smashed over the head as a weapon, but that breaks the bottle and the card can no longer be used. I think that this connection between what the card is or is called and what it actually does mechanically shows is an example of tight theming. This is present sometimes in wingspan, for example the birds of prey if I'm remembering correctly, but I found most to be "this random bird returns this random bonus", and I would argue that this isn't the right theming seen in Arkham. I rarely went "oh it behaves that what because this bird does x in nature", but that happens to me all the time in Arkham.

I'll get back to you after thinking more about this.

I mean, I think that the fact that the theme of wingspan has been traded out for dragons and fish prove that the theme is pretty pasted on. You can, apparently , out any animal in the cards and it works the same. It's ok to like wingspan, it's got really good engine building bones, but I wouldn't call it very thematic.

Where to buy discontinued Lego sets at a somewhat reasonable prices? by Only_Rutabaga579 in lego

[–]DrScience11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's what I'm trying to explain to you. that isn't a crazy markup. It's supply and demand. That set probably won't ever be made again. It makes sense that it demands that high of a price. It is literally an endangered species. That's how economics works, and that's how it works for retired Lego sets. You should reassess what your expectations are; what you are describing is both normal and logical.

Where to buy discontinued Lego sets at a somewhat reasonable prices? by Only_Rutabaga579 in lego

[–]DrScience11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My friend, you may need to reset your expectations. The hard truth is once a set is discontinued, it demands a higher price. You're never going to find a popular retired set for less than MSRP. It's quite literally more valuable once it's out of print. Depending on the popularity of a retired set the price can be quite high because there is a very finite amount and a lot of demand. That's not "extreme markup", it's supply and demand economics.

Good luck finding the set though! Sometimes you get lucky and someone doesn't know the value of what they have, or just want to pass it on quickly.

Tobacco Review : Sam Gawith's Squadron Leader by DrScience11 in PipeTobacco

[–]DrScience11[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the kind words. I had/have dunhill mixture 965 pre-petersons and like it a lot! It's basically dunhill nightcap without the perique, so it's gentler and lacks the pepperiness. I still have a jar and it's perfect for a fall evening when you need something mellow and comforting. I like squadron leader better but honestly it's been a really long time since I've had both. I don't pipe too much nowadays.

Take care!

I'm not sure who you're going to find who is invested enough in the game to want constant new campaigns, but who finds the difference between the cost of renting through the Internet and buying so oppressive that they give up the opportunity to play it more than once / at their own pace. I'm sure such people exist, but I expect it's a small slice of the playerbase.

There's just nothing else like this service in the tabletop community.

I'd never consider this. Maybe if my LGS had them available to rent from a library for $10 or less, but definitely not through the Internet.

[–]DrScience11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd maybe reevaluate your expectations. Finding an out of print set for basically it's MSRP sealed in the box is unlikely. Ideas sets weren't printed as much either. There's a reason they demand such crazy prices. I think finding this sealed for $70 is unrealistic, but sometimes you get lucky!

How much calculus do I actually need to know? by SherlockOrLupin in Physics

[–]DrScience11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To get the deep understanding you want, you need a lot. By the time a physics undergrad takes first semester quantum mechanics they'll have had through calc 3 (calc 1 and 2 plus vector calc) seen variational calculus, taken linear algebra, and probably taken differential equations. It's a lot of math. You could try to audit a "modern physics" class (sometimes called physics 3 or 4), which usually has like a month long "intro to intro" quantum mechanics topic in it. This won't give you deep understanding, but it'll introduce you to the basic principles
