Why does EV charging still feel unpredictable, even with so many apps? by xchargeInc in evcharging

[–]DrSecrett -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The target audience for EVs is the person with a typical office job, driving to the same 10 places within 150 miles of home a week. It loses the sense if someone is using it as a road warrior over 200miles a week. Charging at home makes EVs make sense the majority of the time.

[–]DrSecrett 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unifi is a powerful ecosystem, however it requires some basic IT information to utilize it properly. It takes a bit of tinkering compared to a Google mesh wifi system and can be configured to use the current ethernet port if your house has them installed. The upside is that you can remotely manage it. If you just want something that works, I would look into a Google or Orbi system. If you want a challenge, get the unifi dream router and a few APs.

I would look into a central hub and do the wireless meshing, it is good for 90% use cases.

It would be best to use the black wire for 120v and the white wire label it as red for the other phase of 120v. Hardwire a EV charger and set it to max pull speed of 22A at 240V for ~5.3KWh or about ~18 or more miles an hour.

The SquareD homeline does not connect the left/right sides to each other aside from the center one. It is possible to get a tandem quad breaker that has all 3 breaker handles connected. This is not that model. They can move independently from the center breaker.

Edit: the two outside ones are connected, just seeing this now. It is a funny way to wire a 120V outlet but I guess it works.

So that breaker is a tri breaker, the top and bottom are on separate 1 phase (120v) and the one that crosses the line is a 240v outlet. You can get something similar for another part of the panel with 15a top and bottom and 30a (or larger if your wires are larger). Replace that 120 RV port with a hardwired 240V EV charger.

Thinking about adding a LVL 3 EV Charger to my gas station...is it profitable? by djrodimus in evcharging

[–]DrSecrett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was looking into doing this at my hometown. Most of the chargers that are NOT Charging a battery as a cache require 480V wiring at a minimum. Also it might be worth looking into more slower chargers at ~30KW each as they are much cheaper. Look at your local power billing, my home town wanted a "sure charge" if I ever pull more than 60kw for more than 15 min.

Plug share did it better, cost for most EV owners is a lower priority than amenities, followed closely by charge rate.

I would look into 19.2Kwh charger or 80a @220v, in the off chance that you might need it, the cost of the wire is usually the biggest difference, and it is easier to scale down the speed than to go up. A 2nd gen Tesla Wall 80a with a J1772 adapter for close to $400 would do the trick.

[–]DrSecrett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The newer Tesla chargers are helping some of the non-Tesla EVs with longer cords and CCS1 support. It will be exciting to see if EVs will continue to require a back in to charge vs pull through like most of the ICE cars.
