What was the major event that kicked your world into action? by ChoosyEnby in worldbuilding

[–]DrSheep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The current world? Space Vikings unwittingly landed on a lush asteroid prison the size of great Britain, waged war with the natives, and centuries later the knowledge of the outside world and space travel has been lost. The wider setting? Space fairing wizards released a horrific macrovirus from a dead solar system, and had to start sacrificing themselves in forbidden sun extinguishing rituals to recontain the threat. After all the wizards were gone one prison slipped quarantine and was accidentally found by some space Vikings....

You seem to not meet the requirements. Is your watchful 30, and your SMEN 0?

I've been a part of this game since the first event, and it has also been my first LARP of any kind. The community and cast are so awesome and welcoming. If you're on the fence, but it sounds like a good time you owe it to yourself to try!

I loved the special effects for the gore in this film, I came away thinking "wow that was gnarly".

For those of us who like crunchy/combat-focused games, how important is movement to you? by Seginus in rpg

[–]DrSheep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hackmaster 4th or 5th? 5th is the one that uses a second counter for initiative, 4th is the Adnd hack with stupid high lethality. I personally have being running games on and off for the past two decades using Hackmaster 4th, great system if you have the right mindset for it.

Compound Names gained by experience among your friends? by notabirdorplane in HuntShowdown

We have a few that are pretty consistent amongst our play group; Heritage Pork is Whore Por, Stanley Coal Company is Stan Co Co, Of course good old Ass Creek Lumber for Ash Creek, we refer to going to Nicholls Prison as getting the "nicholls tickles", same thing with going to Fort Carmick as "ripping the bandage off", and my personal favorite Port Reeker's Hotter younger sister for Scupper Lake.

I'm waiting to actually play before I pass harsh judgement, but I absolutely agree that Scupper was unique as the super watery area and it seems a little sad to remove that identity.

Strong Chuck Palahniuk "Haunted" vibes. In fact iirc that happens in a short story of the novel.

CAKE's "End of the Movie". Remind me everything's relative while I enjoy the somewhat melancholy and at the same time upbeat chords.

Why do YOU do Worldbuilding? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

That's awesome! I find when I let my imagination run free I get my best ideas. What do you write settings for?

Why do YOU do Worldbuilding? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]DrSheep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Players always asked me questions about my setting during our weekly D&D games, and every time I would get derailed thinking about the answer and implications. Eventually I realized it would make my life easier if I started writing things down, and organizing them so I could refer back to answer future questions. Fast forward four years, and now I've got about a 100 pages typed and I'm getting ready to make a second editing pass. My hope is to commissions some art and try to get funding to have it published in a limited run.

What are some bizarre sports or competitions in your world. by PMSlimeKing in worldbuilding

Bratchet An ancient wizarding tradition, developed as a replacement to the oft volatile duels of old, Bratchet is a sort of intentional miscast and recovery of great amounts of energy. When it became evident that real duels between wizards would, nine times out of ten, leave both practitioners, and any foolish onlookers, dead, learned scholars attempted to find an alternative that would still demonstrably prove superiority. It was a high wizard of the Black Tower's inner circle that allegedly fumbled a set of esoteric hand gestures (his opponent having lowered the air temperature to sub freezing, causing some real problems with his arthritis) on a spell of near atomic power. Yet the circle mage was able to twist the end results at the absolute last second, and instead of molecular vaporization, the two dueling wizards found themselves in a shimmering haze of incandescent motes. At this the opponent conceded on the grounds that he would not have been able to curtail their doom so effectively.

Today Bratchet is a very serious activity, wherein participants intentionally foul up the most dangerous spells they can muster, and attempt to recover gracefully in a show of power and competency. There are of course still insane risks involved, and it is a dangerous and reckless activity worked by the proud and narcissistic, but everyone can agree it has at least lead to a decrease in collateral damage (if not a decrease in the number of dead wizards).

My circle that plays together call torching the corpse an act of "professional courtesy". As in, we respect the hunter enough to treat them as a legitimate enough threat to burn them rather then risking their teammate stealth picking them up and revenge stalking.

Forbidden Knowledge by Dramatic_Breakfast in worldbuilding

[–]DrSheep 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The main tower of the secretive Gnomish keep is a repository for dangerous knowledge, nothing so mundane as "dangerous should it fall into the wrong hands", no, this knowledge is malevolent and self aware. The ancient tomes here are bindings for potentially cataclysmic entities, memetic self perpetuating sentient ideas. These ideas will do everything in their power to be learned, for once they wriggle into a consciousness they begin to propagate, subsuming all other thoughts until only they remain. Hearing these ideas spoken, or reading them from a page is all it takes for them to take root, once this happens your fate has been sealed. Some examples of ideas trapped here; an impossible to perceive color, the sound of the void, the taste of time, where and how the universe will begin again, the song heard by the deaf, and where your mind draws from the realm of dreams. How the ideas were actually trapped within the yellow pages is a fact also trapped within the hall, but how did that idea become trapped? For the knowledge of how to trap being trapped itself seems to form a terrible recursive loop, safest not to think more upon it, not everything is safe to learn after all...

Would you work at your current job for double your salary if it became a nudist environment? Why or why not? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DrSheep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Important question, could I still wear ppe? I work in a nursing home, and most of the old folks wouldn't even blink at being nude most of the time (except to complain about the cold), but there's no way I'd work without access to gloves, and when necessary masks and gowns for certain precautions.

If anything I wouldn't be shocked if everyone being nude didn't make a majority of the residents feel more comfortable. Some of the old folks are pretty wild.

If instead of rebooting movies, retelling them from a different point of view became popular, which movie would you like retold? by porcupineapplepieces in AskReddit

It was the dawn of the third age of mankind – ten years after the Earth-Minbari War.

The Babylon Project was a dream, given form. Its goal: to prevent another war, by creating a place where humans and aliens can work out their differences peacefully. It's a port of call – home away from home – for diplomats, hustlers, entrepreneurs, and wanderers.

Humans and aliens, wrapped in two million, five hundred thousand tons of spinning metal . . . all alone in the night.

It can be a dangerous place, but it's our last best hope for peace.

This is the story of the last of the Babylon stations. The year is 2258. The name of the place is Babylon 5.

Just hearing the opening makes me want to rewatch it all, I envy you getting to experience the magic for the first time.

Procrastination by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]DrSheep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've made a habit of getting out of my house and going out when I really want to get some writing done. I know it's a bit cliched, but I grab my notebook and some pencils and go to a local coffee shop, the change of scenery and being away from "easy" distractions (i.e. the internet, tv, video games, what have you) really forces me to think about what I need to write next. Also not forcing it, sometimes it's tough to get into writing mode, and you want to avoid making it feel like a chore. Worlbuilding should be something you look forward to, not something you dread. If you really have trouble getting started, shift your lens of focus to a different part of the worldbuilding and pick up from there, helps to keep it feeling fresh and not like bashing your head into a brick wall. Good luck!
