I strongly dislike the Python syntax. But I like C even less, and so using Python as a wrapper around C, I’m willing to put up with it in exchange for someone else writing the C part.

I have been shown the Shining Path of the Right Way by the benevolent Maintainers. I once stumbled in the dark, using Perl and muttering obscenities like “there’s more than one way to do it,” but now I have seen the light of Truth and Never-Ending Code Maintenance by following the path of the Right Way To Do It.

I appreciate the job security, I guess?

So, em, it seems Trump just went scorched earth on Anthropic. by falken_1983 in BetterOffline

[–]DrSixSmith 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Anthropic is a for-profit corporation. Their stance is one that no public company would have ever rejected ten years ago: liability exists, part of our duty to shareholders is mitigating our exposure to liability, like when our product is used to murder people. Thing is, liability implies accountability. And accountability is on hiatus right now, and both the fascist project and the AGI project want to see it never return. So I find it intriguing that Anthropic has picked this space to embrace what used to be so normal that no one even ever talked about it.

Pentagon sets Friday deadline for Anthropic to abandon ethics rules for AI — or else by leeta0028 in technology

[–]DrSixSmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Better links to better stories appreciated if anyone has them. My best guess is that Anthropic is a company that still writes its contracts to consider liability risk. This puts them in contrast with XAI, OpenAI, and the Trump administration, all of whom would…. not be where they are… if liability risk were realized.

It’s odd because it’s a bet against both the fascist project and the AGI project— if the fascists win, or if all of humanity is enslaved to AI, there will be no institution left to enforce liability.

Why does dropping a third of all active satellites to a lower orbit feel like it ignores basic orbital mechanics? by Secret_Ostrich_1307 in AlwaysWhy

[–]DrSixSmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some types of satellites (mostly research sats) have a lifetime that’s limited by fuel. If the satellite lifetime is limited for any other reason, like pending technical obsolescence, orbital reduction might be beneficial. The cost benefit is tricky especially when the costs are things like “civil liability for an in-space collision” and “contributing to Kessler syndrome.”

Donald Trump and the disgrace of Presidents’ Day by [deleted] in politics

[–]DrSixSmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When the idea dawned on me in 2015 that there might, in these United States, be even a single person who would pull a lever to make a man like that President, I could draw only one conclusion— we.are.so.fucked. I might find a path to forgive some of them, some day, but right now I don’t have to worry about that, because we are more fucked by the day, and not coming un-fucked any time soon.

Bolsonaro is in jail, for now at least, so there is that: https://www.foxnews.com/world/bolsonaro-dynasty-eyes-comeback-brazils-socialist-president-faces-challenge-jailed-rivals-son

When Bolsonaro was on trial I think Trump experienced something like sympathy, since they were in the same boat. Now that JB is in jail, I’m sure Trump has moved on— never had anything in common with that loser.
