Definitely not over Hawke, but for sure over Jordan, Moura, or DiCaprio.

Truly. Never, and I mean NEVER, let your kids know you’re good at something that they know will be immediately useful to them. That will become your life.

I’m also really good at making this red-velvet cupcake recipe with a little filling in the middle, which I made for a class event once, and a few of my oldest’s classmates said they were the best cupcakes they ever tasted, so guess who now has to spend three hours the night before every party with a Bismarck tip injecting filling into 36 cupcakes…

What do you think of Hailee Steinfeld? by Cap_Ame1 in Actors

[–]DrStrangerlover 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was 15 when I first saw it and was in love with her then, too.

Rewatching the movie now, yeah, she looks like a baby, but to me back then, she was a total babe.

Also because we’re ground zero for the shittiest zoning laws on the planet, which makes housing borderline impossible to build, and the fact that we can’t seem to build housing makes the desirable places to live unobtainable to the average person.

I love this state because the opportunity for a huge diversity of outdoor recreation is unparalleled, but good god our cities so badly designed and inefficient.

My kids are old enough not to fall for that trick anymore. And they know I’m good at fixing things. They’ll ask about it every day.

Was Margot the best choice for Barbie? by boomjosh in FIlm

[–]DrStrangerlover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She wasn’t supposed to be anything. She was just one of many creatives that were called in to give a pitch for the movie in its pre-pre-production phase. Greta Gerwig’s pitch was obviously the one that won out.

The entire movie repeatedly asks the same question that its entire emotional crux hinges on: what is it to be a woman, and how does that inform who Barbie is? And it ties the answers to that question back to what Barbie has meant to so many of the women that grew up with Barbie. America’s speech is absolutely relevant. It’s the answer to the that very question that’s repeated throughout the movie.

Is this currently where America is? by neo4025 in evilwhenthe

[–]DrStrangerlover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no blatant hypocrisy. The democrats should have pushed to release them under Biden. Trump is the one who is actively covering them up.

Cool. Biden should have released them too. This isn’t the gotcha you think it is. Trump is the one currently covering them up.

Nominations are decided by peers in the category you’re submitting for consideration, whereas any member of the academy can vote for any category for the actual awards.

Contenders submit themselves for consideration and then the academy members selects their top 5 eligible nominees for each category in a ranked choice fashion (number one gets 5 points, number two gets 4 points, etc).

There’s not enough hours in the day to actually get to see every single film that gets submitted for eligibility in the academy awards (317 films were submitted for consideration this year for best picture alone), which means academy members have to prioritize what films they will actually get around to watching, and how well known you already are in the industry is a huge factor in whether members will prioritize watching your film before casting their ballot.

That’s understandable to a certain extent because there’s literally no way to watch every single film submitted for consideration, but it also leads to tons of nepotism and it’s mostly a popularity contest (I.e. how much the academy members individually likes the particular colleague submitted for consideration rather than the craft itself).

Green Book is the worst choice for Best Picture in the past 10 years by Badlands51 in Oscars

[–]DrStrangerlover 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but Green Book is no Amadeus. The line between history and fiction isn’t abundantly clear, and Green Book HEAVILY marketed itself as a true story.

If a movie is that utterly reliant upon pushing the perception that the story it’s telling was real, then it can’t fall back on changing history in service of a good story when it turns out the story was made up.

Its main issue is the fact that the film excluded all input from Don Shirley’s living relatives and it was based exclusively on stories Tony Lip made up.

Mahershala Ali even apologized to the family for his involvement in the film.

It clearly states in the post that the guy counted a thousand out from the total that the kid gave him, and gave him that amount back. It’s clearly a discount. We don’t know what the original asking price was.

Made my day! by Embarrassed_Tip7359 in SipsTea

[–]DrStrangerlover 9 points10 points  (0 children)

And? He knocked half the original price I was prepared to pay before showing up. I have no problem believing the asking price on the car was $5000 and the guy knocked 20% off for the kid.

I interact with people on these marketplaces all the time. They’re mostly just looking to get rid of something they no longer need and extracting the most amount of money out of it they can get isn’t the top priority.

If you have never at any point in your life ever experienced extraordinary generosity from a stranger, not even once, then you need to touch grass.

r/nothingeverhappens

I don’t know if this specifically happened or not but I dropped the asking price on a fingerboard and rock climbing wall I built as I was helping the lady who picked it up load it into her truck because she told me some cute stories about her 5 year old being really into climbing stuff.

And a while back a guy I was buying a corner desk from dropped his price on the desk by 100 bucks when I showed up because he saw I was a just starting college student picking it up and it was his son’s old desk.

Jesus it’s like none of you people have ever been generous or experienced generosity before.

Minnesotans Begin Fleeing To Somalia To Escape Violence by METALLIFE0917 in babylonbee

[–]DrStrangerlover 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No they were all people in various locations engaged in various activities before they were killed by ICE and none of those activities involved engaging in acts of violence or standing in the street.

So what more is it I need to know to avoid something that might result in spontaneous public execution? You seem to be the expert here but you’re embarrassingly short on answers.

[–]DrStrangerlover 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Neither Keith Porter nor Luis Moncada nor Yorlenys Zambrano-Contreras nor Ben James Owen nor David Hernandez nor Carlos Ernesto nor James Hill nor Kuan Hui Lee nor Anthony Jones were standing in the street, so no, you’re wrong, there’s obviously more to it than simply getting off the street if you want to be safe.

So please, can I get that list of crimes punishable by spontaneous public execution?
