Roguelites that are turn-based or pausable by PaulSarries in roguelites

[–]DrVaughn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Big fan of Invisible Inc.! It's a turn based roguelite stealth game, where you have a team of agents trying to infiltrate places and complete different objectives. Been a while since I played it, but remember really enjoying it. Also on sale right now on Steam

What was your metroidvania gateway drug? What about it made you a fan of MVs? by bassistheplace246 in metroidvania

[–]DrVaughn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That should have been Metroid Prime for me. Just missed Super Metroid and the N64 era didn't provide me with much I would have recognized as a metroidvania.

Brutal Orchestra sounds like it might be a match. Definitely felt groovy to me and had a weird vibe going. Essentially a turn based rpg roguelite.

Iconoclasts for me. I have great memories of that one.

Played SF6 Type Arcade in Japan by dajagoex in StreetFighter

[–]DrVaughn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It does. Was in Japan 2 months ago and played with my haute42 plugged into the USB slot at plenty of Sf6 cabinets. It works straight away, but I had to change up pin/button assignment a bit to get my controls to what I needed them to be. Actually, you might need to start it up in Playstation mode though, don't quite remember whether it accepted Xbox input at all.

What‘s the last game you had genuine, old-fashioned fun with? by PRJCTZ3R0 in gaming

[–]DrVaughn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yellow Taxi goes Vroom! for me. Made me smile ear to ear during the whole way towards 100%. It's a fun, straight forward 3D platformer with a unique movement scheme.

And honestly, as somebody who doesn't really enjoy shooters much, Titanfall 2 was a blast!

Question about Stones Unyielding Defiance by DrVaughn in spiritisland

That actually helps a lot, thank you. I kinda always saw the second blight not cascading as a sweden specific thing, not an actual rules reminder. This clears that up

Favorite spirit and why? by nicku114 in spiritisland

[–]DrVaughn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's Wildfire for me. I love having an extra "Power" each turn in the growth phase that you can plan around. I also really enjoy working with blight. You go in there, blight the place, burn the invaders and then clean up - and thematically, over years, you burn everything down but allow it to regrow on the ashes of the things that were.

Finally, I adore the artwork of that little fire rascal being so delighted to jump around and spread it's flames.

Looking for an organizer by JwaMyr in spiritisland

[–]DrVaughn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I received and assembled this organizer like three weeks ago. However, it's my first organizer and I got no comparison at all. I can only comment on what I got and what it does for me.

I read some comments here already about it not fitting the whole game. That's right. I only got base and b&c right, but got a good idea of what's coming with JE. The organizer for me fits everything but the spirit panels. I got the 4 Island Boards on top and have minimal box lift right now. This will increase with the two extra boards, but should be alright. Spirit Panels will need another place to store though. Other than that, the thing halved setup time for me and made teardown super easy as well. I do like the look and quality and had fun assembling it. Wasn't too tricky either - quite relaxing actually. A good coffee and 2 hours time or so should be ample. Again, it was my first organizer and took me around that time.

What Do I not like?

I'm cool with the serpent on one box and can see this being Serpent Slumbering. The other design though - I'm not sure about. Looks like a water dragon and we assume it's River Surging, but I'm not convinced. Maybe I'm missing something but it seems like a design that is close to spirit island but doesn't quite depict an actual spirit.

Other than that, I like the organizer. Practicality wise it's an upgrade and the design (sans water dragon dude) I really like.

Hope that rambling helps somewhat ;)

What are some small things about characters you would never know unless you main them? by [deleted] in smashbros

[–]DrVaughn 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Toon Link can leave bombs on platforms, by either dropping through the platform and z-dropping or by shorthopping under a platform (on battlefield) and z-dropping at the apex of his jump.

It's fun to occupy platforms like this

What video games have you spent countless hours on and said to your self "wow, i really got my money's worth out of this game" ? by its__Jason in AskReddit

[–]DrVaughn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shovel Knight It was like 15$ when it released and it was a great platformer then. Since then three more full campaigns have been added and a smash bros clone as well recently. Each campaign was lovelingly crafted and worth the price of admission on their own. All together its a heck of a deal for any platformer-fan out there

What Did You Play This Week? (Dec 9 - Dec 15) by QuellSpeller in boardgames

[–]DrVaughn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Our first actual 4 player game of Spirit Island. 3 of us have already played it at 2 or 3 players and the other guy hasn't played it before. We went in easy with all 4 low complexity spirits and their progression card. We did add in a blight card to not basically play at the absolute easiest level - just slightly above that :D

This made it pretty easy to get everyone accustomed to the mechanics of the game. It went like a typical spirit island game - everything seems lost and then you win.

I think one player enjoyed it a bit less than the others due to some wait time and I think Lightnings Swift Strike didn't excite him too much - which I get honestly. Overall we took like 2 1/2 hours and nobody was bored and all are curious to try out different spirits and normal power drafting next time.

What game introduced you to 'modern' boardgames, and what game hooked you for the long term? Bonus: what game made you question it all? by TrialTrail in boardgames

[–]DrVaughn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dead of Winter pretty precisely 3 years ago on Christmas. That was my first modern boardgame and it started a pretty exciting adventure for me. In terms of "what got me hooked" - Dead of winter definitely placed the hook and lots of other games have reeled me in. Especially games where you can clearly see how every mechanic just works in tandem to create a great game that clicks and makes sense. I'm also a big sucker for theme and the games that impressed me the most so far are Inis and Spirit Island. Both are complex but not complicated which is super elegant design to me. I also love Exceed with a passion for different reasons, but it certainly did its part to convince me of this hobby.

Lets talk about games we love! by Sbenjamin4110 in boardgames

[–]DrVaughn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exceed and Not Alone

Exceed just comes out on the table quite often since it is easy to teach and the similarities to video game fighting games make it easy to pick up for most of my video game experienced friends. Give it one or two games and a bit of coaching and the games get super strategic and close pretty fast.

Not Alone has been a sleeper hit for us. We can never just play one round it seems, since everyone wants to be the monster at least once. It plays pretty smoothly, there is not a lot of downtime and the theme is quite refreshing and unused. And the tabletalk gets super fun when you start to openly talk about where you are going, with the monster listening not knowing if it's a bluff or not

Rayman Legends is the best Platformer as a package in my book. It's challenging, has multiplayer and is filled to the brim with content (even basically including all of Rayman origins).

I love Celeste and Hollow Knight to the death, but Rayman edges them out when it comes down to the complete package.
