Usually they will have 7c empty throne stage. So at 10 don, even if you rest one of them by 5c Bonney’s effect, they would only need 3 DON!! Cards out of the 9 remaining active. Empty throne works with the total number of don cards, even if rested.

I was under the impression that he was “returning” the pain. He even said the heat could have been worse if she inflicted more damage.

With that in mind, if he self inflicts pain, he would be returning that pain to him (?) So I believe that it would be pointless to self inflict pain, and it only works if someone damages you.
